10 Environment FOOTPATH & BRIDLEWAY IMPROVEMENTS Footpaths:- Many residents (80%) felt that the best way to improve both footpaths and bridleways is to remove the amount of litter on them. This was closely followed by the need to keep roadside verges mown and tidy. 31% of residents stated they used footpaths and bridleways at least once a year Flooding:- . The survey revealed that 22% of respondents have experienced problems with flooding. Historically, the areas of concern are:- Lower Way, North Square and Charlestown. On the question of recycling points at the Turks Head and Marquis of Granby, over 76% of households stated they would like these reinstated. Leisure & Sport The replies to this section reveal a strong interest in after school clubs (57%) and in holiday play schemes (53%). A purpose-built youth centre found favour with 38% of respondents, whilst 36% thought that Willowbed Hall should provide indoor sports facilities and a greater number (52%) thought that the hall should provide more general community events. The Future Many people expressed the view that Chickerell is a well located, safe and pleasant place to live. As always there are areas that could be improved; many spoke of "rat runs" and cars speeding along "racetracks" (in particular Coldharbour residents) and some suggested solutions ranging from traffic calming to speed cameras. Parking was another thorny issue with East Street being singled out as a "nightmare outside the Post Office when the bus stops". Another major concern was the amount of litter and solutions ranged from "more bins" to "educating the public to be more aware of the problem". Coldharbour Many people were concerned about future housing development. Against the two options given, the survey result indicated that 69% of people would prefer any future development to be on remaining open space rather than on Greenfield sites (only 36%). However, on reflection and taking into account the many written comments received, this question should maybe have been expanded to also offer the option of limiting further development in general.
