4 There are a number of halls within the Parish which are used by pre-school groups and clubs etc:- Supermarket:- Chickerell Town Council has consistently supported the provision of a supermarket in the Weymouth/Chickerell border area for some time. The Chickerell Downs development did allocate a retail site at Drakes Avenue, however, this opportunity was never taken up and the site was eventually re-allocated for more housing. The survey results indicated that 85% of respondents within the Parish shop in Weymouth for the bulk of their food shopping requirements. Churches There are six churches within the Parish:- two Church of England; the Methodist; the Congregational Evangelical; the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Gospel Hall - with two other churches across the border in Weymouth which also serve parts of the Chickerell Parish. The Parish Plan survey results indicated strong support for local churches. St Mary the Virgin, North Square Community Halls Willowbed Hall, Putton Lane, Chickerell Village Owned by the Town Council and run by the Village Hall Management Committee. Although a relatively new building, consideration is being given to possible improvements in order that it can be used more extensively. It was felt the Hall lacked flexibility, being one large single room. If alterations were to be made at some time in the future, thought may be given to providing space for a smaller meeting room and it should be noted that there was support in the survey for the creation of a performing stage. There was also support in the Parish Plan survey for more community involvement and informal meetings such as a weekly coffee morning. Victory Hall, Charlestown Owned and run by the local community, following considerable maintenance work by volunteers in 2006, both the hall and the grounds have been greatly improved. The Hall is available to hire for various functions and is currently used on a weekly basis for dance and aerobic classes. Chickerell Methodist Church Hall, North Square, Chickerell Village Currently used by a pre-school group and available for hire. The Sports Pavilion, School Hill, Chickerell Village This new facility was funded by the local community as well as money provided by developers and it is available for hire through the Town Council. It is currently used by a local toddler group. St Edmund's Church Hall, Lanehouse Although located in Weymouth, a well-used facility for Littlesea residents in particular.
5 The Library The survey results showed that the Library (located in Chickerell Village) is an under-used resource. However, 24% of respondents supported Saturday opening of the Library. It is hoped that the Library opening hours can be extended to encourage greater use. Doctors Most of the Weymouth practices are used by Chickerell residents. The three most commonly used are:- Chickerell Surgery (a branch of the Abbotsbury Rd, Weymouth surgery) Wyke Regis Health Centre Lanehouse Surgery The Parish Plan Survey results showed strong support for a Chickerell Village purpose built Chickerell Library surgery. The developers of the new Putton Lane housing development are required by West Dorset District Council to investigate this possibility. However, a decision on any new Health Centre would be one made by the Primary Care Trust and the Doctor(s). Dentists There is a NHS Dentist practice at the Wyke Regis Health Centre and others in Weymouth. The Parish Plan Survey results indicated strong support for a NHS Dentist in Chickerell Village but a positive outcome might depend upon the construction of a purpose built Health Centre. Pharmacy The survey indicated strong support (58%) for Saturday opening of Chickerell Pharmacy. The Lanehouse Pharmacy is open on Saturday mornings. ENVIRONMENT As indicated in the survey results, 74% of respondents considered location to be an important factor about the Parish, with 55% indicating that environment was also important. Respondents to the survey showed support for the two Nature Reserves - the Woodland Trust area and Crookhill. Chickerell residents have access to the Heritage Coast, Woodland Trust Land and the surrounding countryside by using the numerous footpaths. The Chickerell Village Playing Field has been saved from development for at least 50 years and the Willowbed Hall Field is owned by the Town Council. The Peto Memorial Hall land has been developed by the Town Council as a Public Garden. In answer to the survey question, 27% of respondents supported restrictions on bonfires within the Parish. The Parish Plan fully endorses the Environmental Management Plan '99 planning brief but, due to the passage of time, an update may be desirable. The 2007 West Dorset District Council Conservation Area appraisal has been noted, and it is believed that the existing Conservation Area may require extension to protect some of the few remaining large gardens near the village centre.
