EXECUTIVE
PRINCIPAL’S
WELCOME>
Welcome to Kirwan State High School. We believe this is a
great school and a good place to be.
CONTENTS>
Kirwan High accepted its first Year 8 students in January,
1979. The school was officially opened on 3 November of
that year by Deputy Premier Sir Llew Edwards. Since then
our student population has grown to more than 2000 and we
have more than 120 teachers. Kirwan is a large school with
excellent facilities, excellent programs and an excellent
relationship with its community. We like to describe
ourselves as A School of Excellence.
The mission of our school is to provide educational
excellence for tomorrow’s citizens. We aim to help every
student achieve the best they possibly can from their
secondary education.
This is best achieved by parents, teachers and students
working together through positive, respectful and
supportive relationships to develop a mindful, caring and
compassionate school community.
Our mission commits us to the concept of excellence. We
believe passionately that every single student is capable
of excellence. As a philosopher once said, “The quality of a
person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to
excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavour”.
Through hard work and a passion for learning, students are
encouraged to strive for personal excellence – doing their
very best.
Kirwan High is committed to being a mindful community
where students are able to develop as thoughtful,
independent learners and successful people. To achieve
this, our teachers are committed to excellence in teaching
practice. Kirwan High is at the cutting edge of innovative
and effective teaching that encourages deep thinking and
develops self-regulated, resilient and motivated learners.
As independent and self-regulated learners, students
are encouraged to develop self-discipline and to accept
responsibility and consequences for their own actions.
Discipline at Kirwan High is firm but fair. We encourage
the development of teacher-pupil relationships that are
characterised by mutual respect and understanding.
We aim to prepare students not only for the few years
they attend high school, but for the years that lie ahead.
Students understand that as well as being individuals,
they have community responsibilities. Responsibility, duty
and service are values we are proud to promote. Positive
student engagement, respect and safety are at the core of
all we do.
In preparing students to be tomorrow’s citizens, Kirwan
High recognises that this means not only helping students
to become leaders in their local community, but actively
engaged global citizens. In our rapidly globalising world,
students must have an international mindedness that equips
them with an international perspective and intercultural
understanding.
Let us work together as a school community to live out
our mission and ensure that every student achieves their
individual mark of excellence – their personal best!
Kirwan High is committed to providing students with experiences and opportunities that will allow them to become active
global citizens with a deep understanding of international issues and a commitment to intercultural understanding.
Our International Student Program offers a rich, multi-faceted learning opportunity for students from abroad. Students
from countries such as Germany, Brazil, the United States, Norway, Italy and Japan enjoy full immersion in school life as
well as participating in a wide range of extracurricular activities. These students stay for up to one year. Students benefit
from extensive support services such as a dedicated International Student Support Coordinator, Head of Department
International Student Program and their own International Student Centre. Students who speak English as their second
language have the opportunity to develop their English language proficiency and are supported by specialist ESL teachers.
Our international students develop friendships for life and add to the richness and diversity of our school community. The
International Student Program provides our Australian students with the opportunity to interact with students from other
countries, to learn about other cultures, and to participate in our Homestay Program.
International Students
have a great time
All Kirwan High students learn about other cultures and about issues of international significance. The school has taken
a leading role in North Queensland in the implementation of the Access Asia initiative, an Asia Education Foundation
program designed to provide students with a deeper and more authentic engagement with Asian cultures.
As a school of excellence, Kirwan High is committed not only to providing an international education, but providing an
education of international standard. The school has achieved accreditation with the Council of International Schools
(CIS). This was the result of a comprehensive two year review of all aspects of the school’s operations. This accreditation
acknowledges that our school is focussed on continuous improvement and the delivery of learning outcomes through world
best practice in teaching and learning.
THE ART AND SCIENCE
OF TEACHING>
The teaching and learning framework that underpins our school’s curriculum
VOCATIONAL
ACHIEVEMENTS>
Kirwan High creates opportunities for our students to be
successful learners and prepare them for the future. A
model which allows us to achieve these goals is The Art
and Science of Teaching: A Comprehensive Framework for
Effective Instruction. We are the only state school in North
Queensland implementing The Art and Science of Teaching,
and the benefits of focusing on the ways students learn is
clearly evident in the excellent outcomes of our students.
The framework consists of ten design questions that form
a logical sequence for effective teacher planning and
reflection:
• What will I do to establish and communicate learning
goals, track student progress, and celebrate success
• What will I do to help students effectively interact with
new knowledge
• What will I do to help students practice and deepen their
understanding of new knowledge
• What will I do to help students generate and test
hypotheses about new knowledge
• What will I do to engage students
• What will I do to establish or maintain classroom rules
and procedures
• What will I do to recognize and acknowledge adherence
and lack of adherence to classroom rules and
procedures
• What will I do to establish and maintain effective
relationships with students
• What will I do to communicate high expectations for all
students
• What will I do to develop effective lessons organized into
a cohesive unit
The Art and Science of Teaching, and the school’s focus
on the Habits of Mind, is designed to create thoughtful,
independent learners and successful people.
Vocational Education at Kirwan High provides a variety of
The Kirwan State High School IT network services students
anywhere and at anytime. The school’s internal network is
referred to as inSchool and when accessed off-site via
the internet, it is referred to as ourSchool.
inSchool
This network allows students to access:
• A list of resources and web links;
• Student timetables;
• Email that can be ‘picked up’ anywhere and at anytime.
EXPANDING THE CURRICULUM
While the network is there to support all curricula and
is accessible from every block in the school via 1600
computers, the school provides a number of subjects
specifically designed to enhance computer literacy.
• All Year 8 subjects have Information and
Communication Technologies embedded.
• Year 9 ICT exposes students to Information Technology
skills in the context of a real world client and a real
world problem. The class is guided by their teacher
through the Software Development Cycle to solve
problems and meet client needs using a range of
packages, including: Desktop Publishing,
Spreadsheets, Animation and Video Editing.
• Year 10 ICT continues and builds on the Year 9 course.
It gives students greater independence and moves
them towards thinking entrepreneurially. Units of work
completed include: An Introduction to Hardware, Game
Design, Programming and Animation. Students work
both individually and within small groups to form
teams in order to create client focused solutions.
• Year 11 and 12 VET Technology provides students
with a broad exposure to Information Technology.
The course prepares students to work in the demanding
yet ever expanding world of Information Technology.
Students can gain a Certificate II in Information
Technology. Areas covered are: multimedia, helpdesk
operation, communication and workplace health and
safety, working in an Information Technology
environment and integration of Office Applications.
The field of Information Technology is the main focus for
all content and assessment is designed to simulate the
real work environment where practical.
offered. They will be relevant to students wanting to become
Mining Engineers and work in the trades area, as well as
people interested in Environmental Science and Business.
Work Experience, Apprenticeships and Traineeships are
also a positive aspect of being part of the Academy with
interested students having the chance to apply for work
experience and trade opportunities to get them further in
THE CHAMPION SCHOOL AND SPORTS EXCELLENCE
Kirwan State High School has a very proud sporting reputation with an alumni of state and national representatives.
A major focus of the School is the Sports Excellence Program, first introduced fourteen years ago. It is now recognised
as providing significant support to the aspiring young athlete.
In the past twelve years Kirwan High has taken out twenty-three Queensland Championships in Soccer, Hockey,
Indoor Cricket, Touch and Rugby League.
Kirwan High excelles at district, North Queensland, State and Australian level in all sports featured in the excellence
program. These sports include Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Soccer, Touch and Volleyball.
Michael Liu
Award Winning Instrumental
Music Program
Kirwan High was the first school in North Queensland to operate Sport Excellence as a subject within school
time. As a product of operating these programs for the past fourteen years we have found that an
involvement in sport achieves the following:
• Individual pursuit of personal sporting passion - Our sport programs allow students
and teachers to follow their individual dreams and passions in their chosen sport which
encourages participants to be motivated at school.
• Academic engagement - Through their involvement in sport at school, many individuals
engage in education and are more inclined to attend school.
• Celebrating Success - Sport encourages students to feel a sense of personal fulfilment
and self-esteem. At Kirwan we celebrate success which develops school pride and sense
of community.
Our Sports Excellence Program takes some of the best young North Queensland
athletes, and provides them with every opportunity to excel. We provide the most
up-to-date and progressive programs available. To assist in this we have staff that
provide a very high level of expertise and an extensive background in the coaching
and development of young athletes and in addition to this we engage some of
the leading coaches in their respective sports.
At Kirwan we have a strong belief in our young sports people and the
Sports Excellence Program is carried out in a supportive educational
environment, one which accommodates both the academic and
social commitments of its participants. We aim to strike a balance
ensuring that our students not only have the opportunity to excel in
their chosen field, moreover they receive a well-rounded education
preparing them for the world beyond school.
MAJORING
IN SUCCESS>
We never grow tired of telling people that Kirwan is a great
school and a good place to be. We’re a school that majors
in success for all of its students.
Students tell us they like coming to one of Queensland’s
largest secondary schools because of the friendly, caring
atmosphere and the many opportunities they receive.
Success is about the pursuit of excellence. Kirwan
High prides itself on achieving excellence in academic
performance, sport, technology, music and the arts.
PASTORAL CARE
The personal atmosphere has been developed by a well
established pastoral care program, which involves many
extra curricular activities including musicals, camps,
sporting opportunities and a full time school chaplain. It’s
about helping students reach their personal potential and
to be successful in many different contexts.
Outstanding
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IS A TOP PRIORITY
Kirwan provides a wide range of academic opportunities
for students. More than 60 subjects are on offer in the
senior school.
These include a wide variety of vocationally oriented
subjects as well as extension programs for academically
gifted students.
In twenty first century schools, it is essential that we design
and implement curricula which recognise the individual
learning need of all students.
At Kirwan we are fortunate to have a large number of
dedicated teachers who are committed to ensuring each of
their students achieves their best. This is what excellence
is all about.
MUSIC EXCELLENCE
Besides music as an authority subject, the school offers instrumental
music to more that 250 students in strings, woodwind, brass and percussion.
The program also features vocal instruction for classical or modern singers, and guitar
lessons for interested students.
As well, keen young musicians are encouraged to join one of our successful ensembles
which include wind symphony, concert band, big band, string orchestra, woodwind
ensembles, percussion ensembles, choir, stage band, jazz combo and various vocal
ensembles.
The school offers a Year 8 Music Excellence Program and Year 12 Music Extension
subject to extend and challenge gifted young musicians, and to promote high
standards of musicianship throughout their time at Kirwan High School.
Kirwan’s ensembles perform publicly throughout the year at different events. We are
always delighted with the feedback we receive from performance patrons. Kirwan’s
record of achievement in the arts continues with visual arts, theatre and dance.
Visual arts students regularly take out regional and state prizes in events such as
the Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Art.
Dance and drama students show their talent through outstanding performances in
the annual Arts Expo and school musicals.
“Excellence in music and the arts is an important ingredient
to Kirwan’s recipe for success.”
& PROGRAMS>
A school wide approach to
Positive Behaviour has been adopted
POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT (PBS)
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a school-wide approach
to behaviour management that creates a positive, safe and
supportive school environment for all members of our
school community. Kirwan High is currently implementing
this innovative program. Our key focus is to positively
engage students in a respectful, safe environment.
YEAR LEVEL COORDINATORS
A coordinator has been assigned to each year
level to ensure that students have access to a rich
selection of activities during their school life. The
co-ordinators’ brief is to build a sense of community, and
to encourage belonging.
Their responsibilities include the organisation of:
• Camps, Musical, Year Level Socials;
• Students to participate in community events;
• Committees;
• Parent information and ’getting to know you’ sessions;
• Structures to counsel; help students with poor results
and poor attendance.
Parents are encouraged to contact their Year Level
Coordinator should they have any questions or concerns
regarding their student.
SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES
The school has a Special Services unit consisting of a
Special Needs Support Group and a Special Education
Program.
Special Education caters for the needs of students with
Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual, Physical,
Speech Language and Hearing disabilities. Students are
supported by Unit staff to access subject areas across
the curriculum that meets the academic aspirations and
interest of our students. We offer access to post-school
options through work experience and TAFE courses.
SPECIAL NEEDS SUPPORT GROUP
The Special Needs Support Group offers a wide range of
services but its primary focus is students with a low level
of functional literacy and numeracy.
SCHOOL CHAPLAIN
Kirwan is proud to be the first state high school in North
Queensland to appoint a school chaplain. The School
Chaplain makes a tremendous contribution to school life.
The School Chaplain’s main role is presenting a God who
is ancient but believable and worthy of our trust. God is
relevant in our secular society.
STUDENT ASSESSMENT
At the beginning of Semesters 1 and 2, Year 10, 11 and 12
students are issued with:
• The School Policy on Student Assessment
(a similar policy is implemented in all state secondary
schools).
• They also record their own assessment schedule in
their school planner. Senior Assessment Schedules are
also available on the school’s Extranet “ourSchool”.
It is important that parents familiarise themselves with
these two documents. Parents may obtain their own copies
on request from the school.
Year 8 and 9 students are given assessment tasks and
dates by individual teachers. They will also record these in
their student diaries.
SCHOOL-BASED POLICE OFFICER
Kirwan has had a School Based Police Officer for over
a decade now. Our School-Based Police Officer is well
accepted into the school community. The School-Based
Police Officer plays an important role in developing positive
attitudes to policing, the law and the community.
Youth Support Coordinator
The Youth Support Coordinator works to support young
people at risk of early school leaving by increasing the
capacity of schools, families and the community to ensure
that young people stay connected to learning. This is
achieved through the establishment and coordination of
various peer support groups to support those struggling
with a variety of issues such as bullying, conflict, social
skills, resilience, self esteem and more. Individual support
sessions are also available to provide more intensive
support and appointments can be made with the Youth
Support Coordinator who is based in the Student Support
Centre.
TUTORING
Many of our subject departments offer after school
tutoring. All students requiring extra help are advised to
take advantage of these opportunities.
A.T.S.I.A.P.
An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aspirations
Program fosters academic success and exposes students
to careers appropriate to their needs and interests. ATSIAP
students may participate in camps and excursions as well
as a Regional ATSIAP Challenge usually held in Term 2
each year.
DEFENCE FAMILIES
Kirwan High has a large number of students from defence
families. On arrival you can obtain, from the Guidance
Officers, information concerning interstate transition
in academic areas and our Defence Transition Mentor.
Defence families have made an important contribution to
Kirwan High, and we welcome them.
The Defence Transition Mentor assists students to make a
successful transition into a new school, and community by
providing support, information and referrals.
You can access the Defence Transition Mentor in either two
ways:
Self Referral – Students may make an appointment with
the Defence Transition Mentor by dropping by her office
in the Student Support Centre or ask at the Student
Counter.
Parent Referral – Parents may refer their child/children to
the Defence Transition Mentor if they have any concerns by
phone, email or in person.
The desired outcome is a smooth transition of secondary
school students from mobile Australian Defence Force
families from school to school and across curriculum
jurisdictions.
EXTRA CURRICULAR
ACTIVITIES>
SENIOR LEADERSHIP
Our school philosophy recognises the important
part that students play in the school decisionmaking
process. Students have the opportunity
to join committees, clubs and interest groups.
Year 12 students are members of various committees
that organise key school events such as the Kirwan
Cultural Evening, the Senior Formal, Dive In Movie
Nights, Doorknocks, Supporters Club and lunch
time activities.
Two senior students are also elected to be part of
the School Council - this gives all the students the
opportunity to make a positive contribution to the
management of their school.
SCHOOL DISCOS
School discos may be held four times per year. They
are open to Kirwan High School students and have
great themes. The discos are well attended and
students have a lot of fun.
tournaments and workshops. The club attends
regular interschool competitions and occasionally
travels further to state and national events.
CLUB ECO
Club Eco is a Kirwan High group of students, parents
and community members who are committed to
making the school and its practices more sustainable.
In 2012 the Kirwan High Eco Club had a busy year
of environmental pursuits. The group had a number
of initiatives, ranging from the implementation of
recycling bins across the school to promoting the
reef guardian program. Their main focus for the
year was the transformation of the rainforest area.
In 2013 the group will continue to strive to make
Kirwan High a cleaner, greener place to learn.
STUDENT VOICE
A student representative council called Student
Voice encourages students to participate in school
decision making.
WELCOME
TO YEAR 8>
Kirwan High is the only high school in
Townsville with a Year 8 Centre.
The purpose of this centre is to help
students in their transition from the
one teacher, one classroom Primary
situation to the more complex environment
at High School.
So, we provide Year 8s with a place of their
own – a place to call home, where they can
soon make friends and become part of the
Kirwan High Family.
EXCURSIONS AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Excursions and outdoor activities are encouraged to
supplement classroom learning and to foster sound
social relationships.
Every year level is offered an annual camp. Senior
French students also travel overseas to France
every two years for a language and cultural tour of
a lifetime!
INTERACT
An active Interact club at Kirwan is sponsored by
Sunrise Rotary Club. Interact takes its name from
International Action and is a combination service
and social club for students of Years 10, 11 and 12.
Interactors work hard on community projects and
gain great satisfaction from helping others.
JUNIOR AND SENIOR DEBATING TEAMS
Kirwan High students participate in a Townsville
competition. This is conducted out of school hours
and the venue rotates among schools. Teachers
coach these teams during lunch hours and after
school.
“We provide Year 8s with a place of
their own – a place to call home,
where they can soon make friends
and become part of the Kirwan High
Family.”
INDUCTION PROGRAM
When Year 8s first come to Kirwan they are inducted into
High School life with a special program to help them learn
about the general aspects of life at Kirwan High and how
they are best able to make the transition from Primary
to High School. Students coming into Special Education
Programs have an opportunity to take part in a Transition to
High School Program commencing with social interaction
usually with a sport or cultural base and then closer to the
end of Term 4 take part in academic classes. This enables
a smoother transition to high school.
FIRST YEAR CENTRE
To help with this transition Kirwan High has the airconditioned
First Year Centre for the use of students as a
base to make them feel at home and secure. This Centre
has its own toilets for the use of Year 8s only, and many
of their classes are conducted in the classrooms of the
Centre.
At lunch time classrooms in the First Year Centre are made
available for Year 8 students to play board games, study or
do homework and for rehearsing plays or oral presentations
with their friends. The Centre is made attractive with
coloured posters, student artwork and samples of student
class work.
YEAR 8 COORDINATOR
The Centre contains the office of the Year 8 Coordinator,
whose responsibility is to look after the Year 8 students.
This means that the students have easy access to a
person who will counsel them when necessary. Our Head
of Department Student Wellbeing, School Chaplain,
Community Education Counsellors, School-Based Youth
“Our Top Scholar
Program has
enjoyed terrific
success.”
Health Nurse, School-Based Police Officer, Youth Support
Coordinator and Defence Transition Mentors are also
available to Year 8 students.
CARE MEETING TEACHERS
To further help Year 8 students in this year of transition,
each class is assigned a Care Meeting Teacher, whose role
is to look after the pastoral care of the students. These
teachers are specially chosen for their empathy with new
high school students and they are always willing to look
after the needs of the students in their care.
EXECUTIVE SUPPORT
In the Executive Team at Kirwan High, one Deputy
Principal is assigned the task of liaising with the
Year 8 Co-ordinator in the organisation and management
of Year 8 students, so that continuity and stability is
maintained.
CAMPS
A sense of group identity and independence is fostered at
Kirwan High by the Year 8 Camps which are held each year.
Up to four camps are held at once so that students have
a choice of venue. These camps are very popular and are
conducted by teachers who volunteer, because they enjoy
working with Year 8 students.
SENIOR BUDDY PROJECT
Another initiative provided by Kirwan High for Year 8s is
the Senior Buddy Project. Year 11 student volunteers work
with the Year 8s throughout the year, leading them through
a series of fun-filled activities and peer mediation when
necessary to help them fit into High School life. It is also a
means of providing a school ‘big brother or sister’ for each
Year 8 student so that interaction takes place between
the junior and senior students to help create a family
atmosphere.
TOP SCHOLAR PROGRAM
Cool to be Smart – Great to Achieve!
Kirwan State High School is proud of its academic programs.
Academic Excellence is a major platform of our school and
is at the heart of all that we do. We have implemented a Top
Scholar program at Year 8, 9 and 10 level to cater specifically
for talented academic students. One of the objectives of
the Top Scholar program at Kirwan State High School is to
make academic achievement popular so students will be
proud to be the best, proud to enter academic competitions,
and proud to stand up in front of their peers because of
academic achievement.
Our Top Scholar program aims to:
• Lay the foundations for good thinking and reasoning
in all contexts - teaching students to think clearly and
accurately.
• Provide opportunities for students to discover and
construct ideas, rather than merely absorb facts and
regurgitate the views of others.
• Teach students to ask the kinds of questions which go
to the heart of a problem rather than to ask and answer
questions that only cover the surface.
• Encourage students to be creative thinkers.
Academic
Excellence
is a top priority
“Kirwan High students wear
their uniform with pride.”
YEAR 8 WELLBEING PROGRAMS
A sense of belonging and pride in their school is fostered by
the Kirwan High School community. Students are urged to
take pride in themselves and their surroundings. Assisting
Year 8s to feel more secure and comfortable at school is the
first step in the sense of belonging and pride. A Kirwan High
Year 8 program has been designed with this in mind.
YEAR 8 INFORMATION NIGHT
An information night is held early in Term 1 to welcome Year
8 students and parents and provide information about Year
8 programs and activities available at Kirwan State High
School.
YEAR 8 CELEBRATION NIGHT
During Term 2 a Year 8 Celebration Night is held to display
students work, to have Year 8 Music students perform and
generally to celebrate and let parents view the wonderful work
Year 8 students have been doing.
ACADEMIC, MUSIC AND SPORTS EXCELLENCE
In order to promote standards of excellence, Kirwan High
offers Year 8 Academic, Music and Sports Excellence for gifted
and talented students.
Students who participate in these programs are grouped into
the Academic, Music and Sports Excellence classes and will
receive extension and enrichment opportunities to enhance
ACHIEVEMENT>
KIRWAN HIGH IS A
UNIFORM SCHOOL>
Kirwan High students wear their uniform with pride. The correct and dignified wearing of the uniform helps students
identify with their school and encourages good, positive attitudes which flow over into the learning area. The proud wearing
of the school uniform adds to the school tone.
The Kirwan State High uniform policy has been drawn up and endorsed by parents, students and teachers.
Every effort has been made to ensure the uniform is:
• As inexpensive as possible;
• Modest and dignified;
• Practical;
• Popular with students.
Jason Taumalolo
At Kirwan we value:
• Neat, tidy, dignified personal presentation which will prepare students for the workforce;
• Pride in being part of a team;
• Senior leadership.
Our senior uniform was phased in during 1992. It is expected that all senior students will wear it. Our senior uniform
emphasises the adulthood and maturity of our older boys and girls. Senior leadership is an important value of our school.
KIRWAN HOMESTAY
PROGRAM>
Students living in remote areas of Queensland are now able to finish their senior studies at a state high school under the
new homestay pilot program announced by the Queensland Government.
For some years now, with the support of a number of Townsville families, our school has been able to provide opportunities
for students from outside the Townsville region to achieve excellence in their chosen sporting field. Now this has been
officially extended to include all subjects.
“Our past program has been an outstanding success.”
At an individual level we can be proud of these students who relocated to become members of our Sports Excellence
Programs:
• Jacob Lillyman who came to us from Richmond and has represented the Queensland Origin Rugby League Team and
the Australian Schoolboys. He is now a New Zealand Warriors First Grade player;
• Nene Macdonald from Cairns was selected in the Queensland and Australian Schoolboys teams in 2011. Toured Europe
educational support as possible both at school and by working/linking closely with the network of Homestay families.
Over the years we have had many unofficial Homestay students interested in Sport and Music.
Now we are a part of Education Queensland’s official pilot and we are keen to take students with a wide range of talents
including those interested in academic or trade careers.
If you are from out of town and interested in further developing your skills and understanding in any subject area we would
Students have excellent
opportunities to learn
INDEPENDENT
LEARNING>
HOMEWORK
A homework diary is issued to all students at the beginning of the year or on enrolment. Homework is an integral part of
study, developing habits and skills of independent work, self-directed learning and application necessary for vocational and
personal development throughout life.
These habits should be established in Year 8 and built upon through to Year 12. There is never ‘no homework’.
Purposes of homework:
• To ensure that the work taught in class is understood, learnt and practised;
• To practise creative thinking;
• To provide time for learning and memorising facts;
• To provide time for revision of knowledge already gained;
• To provide the opportunity for students to work individually, solve academic problems and to learn academic
self-discipline.
In general, students are encouraged to have a routine where they revise work done in class the day before and the week
before. Any work that is found to be difficult should then be discussed with a class teacher.
There is much evidence to show that a revision routine of this nature is the best possible homework a student can do.
Please consult the school’s homework policy booklet for details of individual subject requirements.
Some suggested time allocations for homework:
Year 8
1hr - 1.5hrs per night
Year 9
1.5hrs - 2hr per night
Year 10 2 - 3hrs per night
Year 11/12 at least 3hrs per night
HOMEWORK CLASSES
Homework classes are conducted for English, Mathematics, Science, L.O.T.E., Social Science and Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander students. Teachers will make time to help students who discover problems during their revision routine. A
schedule of all times is available from the office.
RESOURCE
SCHEME>
PARENT RESOURCE SCHEME
For students to derive maximum benefit from their
secondary education it is important that they have the
advantage of access to essential texts, reference materials
and other necessary resources.
A Parent Resource Scheme operates at Kirwan, whereby
students pay a fee and the school lends them the range of
necessary textbooks and provides printed notes and a range
of other materials including the most up to date computer
equipment.
The purpose of this scheme is to contain costs to a minimum
for parents. The savings are very considerable in that if each
student were required to provide all books, booklets, and
resources, the cost to parents would be very great. Basically
the subject area charge covers the provision of a wide range
of class sets, textbooks, audio-visual materials, computer
materials and printed notes.
As well as saving parents money, this scheme maximises
the student’s educational opportunity by providing the
widest range of texts and equipment possible. Currently
the school holds many different titles. It would be almost
impossible for parents to purchase such a wide selection
of materials or provide access to the latest computer
technology provided at school.
The Parent Resource Scheme which has been adopted by
Kirwan High has received full support and endorsement
from the Parents and Citizens’ Association.
PAYMENTS
Details of the scheme and the necessary agreement form
will be mailed to parents during the first two weeks of
school.
However, if you are not in a financial position to pay this sum
immediately, arrangements can be made for the contribution
to be paid in regular installments by completing a Payment
Plan and eligible parents/guardians may choose Centrepay
to deduct regular payments. Your student will receive the
full benefits of the scheme in the interim.
PARENTS AND CITIZENS’ ASSOCIATION
Parents and Citizens’ Association meetings are held at
7.30pm on the second Tuesday of each month (February
to November) in the Library at the school. All parents are
welcome and encouraged to attend.
QCS
PREPARATION>
INFORMATION
NIGHTS>
Our students win
many Awards
In the last week of August or beginning of September each
year, OP-eligible students from around the state sit for
the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test. The test assesses
performance in 49 Common Curriculum Elements - the
skills and abilities underpinning the senior curriculum. For
a student, the best preparation for the QCS test is to have
worked hard and done their best during their time at school.
All OP-eligible students wishing to enter university need to
do the QCS test.
What Kirwan High offers under the umbrella “QCS Test
Preparation” is not an opportunity to cram content. Rather it
is a strategy to ensure that students are completely familiar
with the format, language, and operation of the QCS test so
that in September, they are well placed to demonstrate their
skills and abilities. The QCS test is the only test students
will do where the average of all students in the school is
used to determine each individual result.
A comprehensive program to prepare students for their
QCS test in Year 12 will start in Year 11. This preparation
is mandatory for students wanting to take the QCS test at
this school.
In addition to the preparation sessions, all students will
sit for three full practice QCS tests, one at the end of Year
11, one in Term 2 of Year 12 and another in the last week
of Semester 1. The practice test papers will be sent away
for professional marking and each individual student will
receive an individual written report outlining the areas
that the student will need to work on in order to improve
their QCS results. Additional whole day workshops are held
during the two years.
SUBJECT SELECTION NIGHTS
Subject Selection Nights are also offered in Term 3 and 4 so
that students entering Year 8, 9 and 11 are introduced to our
vast subject range.
YEAR 10 NIGHTS
Year 10 students can attend Study Skills Nights and Career
Preparation and Further Studies Nights in Term 3 to help
them achieve their ultimate career goals.
YEAR 8 INFORMATION NIGHT
An information night is held early in Term 1 to welcome Year
8 students and parents and provide information about Year
8 programs and activities available at Kirwan State High
School.
ENROLMENTS
Most enrolments for 2013 will have been completed by
the end of the 2012 school year. Late enrolments will be
accepted from Monday 14th January between the hours
of 9.00am and 3.00pm. Monday 28th January is a public
holiday i.e. Australia Day.
Implicit in the enrolment of a student is the willingness of
the student and his/her parents/guardians to support the
values, standards and rules of the school and its community.
ATTENDANCE
Regular punctual attendance at school is expected of all
students. Research shows that in Queensland, higher
student attendance at school is associated, on average,
with higher student achievement.
Kirwan has an electronic roll system and attendance is
monitored closely. To do this the school has implemented
a software program called ID ATTEND. When students are
absent without explanation you may receive a SMS Text
message on your mobile, or an email to your preferred
email address. You are requested to contact the
school to explain your student’s absence. For
this program to be effective, it is important
for parents/guardians to communicate to the
school immediately if a change of mobile
phone number or email address has
occurred.
Should a student arrive late in the first
period, a letter of explanation from the
student’s parent/guardian is required for
their Subject Teacher. This letter must be
presented to the Student Counter if the student is arriving
at school after period 1.
Should a child be absent from school for one day only, a letter
of explanation to the Rolls Officers in the Administration
Block or a phone call to the Absence Lines 4773 8108/4773
8105 from the student’s parent/guardian is required. Email:
absences@kirwanshs.eq.edu.au. If a student is absent
two or more days a medical certificate must be provided
to the Rolls Officers in the Administration Block. Parents/
Guardians of all students who are absent from school for
ten (10) days or longer for any reason (including illness),
must complete an Exemption from Compulsory Schooling
and Compulsory Participation. This form can be obtained
from the Administration Office.
If absences continue without evidence being supplied to the
school it may be necessary to inform the Townsville District
Education Office.
A student’s complete absence history is also available by
contacting the school.
Students may not leave the school
grounds during school hours without
special permission from the school
Administration. Lunch passes will
NOT be approved. This applies to
students of all year levels. The names
and details of all students leaving the
school grounds are recorded on the
computer by the General Office staff.
STUDENTS
HEALTH &
MEDICATION>
We are concerned about the health and welfare of all
students. You will appreciate that if we are to make the best
decisions for students regarding health matters, we need
accurate and current information about your child’s health.
If your child has a serious medical condition please provide
the school with detailed information about symptoms that
staff should be alert for and any emergency treatments.
MEDICATION
If your child is to have prescribed medication at school
you should deliver the medication along with the doctor’s
written instructions to the General Office. No medication is
to be carried by students. A medication form will be issued
to you to complete and the drugs stored for the student’s
use. Non-prescription medication is not permitted.
When medication is administered to the student this will be
recorded in a register. All drugs are discarded at expiry date
or at the end of each year.
ILLNESS
Students who feel unwell at school must first report to the
class teacher who will direct them to the General Office with
a note to this effect. During morning or lunch time recesses,
students should report directly to the Student Counter.
Facilities for housing sick students are limited. Sick bay is
used as a holding station only. Your student needs to know
a contact so that we can phone parents and send students
home as quickly as possible.
SCHOOL-BASED YOUTH HEALTH NURSE
In 1999, a School-Based Youth Health Nurse was appointed
to Kirwan High School. The role of the School-Based Youth
Health Nurse is to provide information and guidance to
young people experiencing problems, and refer them to
other health and welfare professionals if required. The
School-Based Youth Health Nurse plays an important role
in our Healthy Living Program. Appointments can be made
directly with the School-Based Youth Health Nurse based in
the Student Support Centre.
BUSES
Providing that Kirwan is the closest school, free transport
is provided from surrounding areas which are a minimum
distance of 4.8 kilometres from the school. This privilege
may be withdrawn if a student’s behaviour is unsatisfactory.
Students must obey lawful instructions given by drivers in
charge of the buses.
Application forms to travel by bus are available from the
bus company.
TRANSPORT FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY
Students who meet eligibility criteria can apply for
transport assistance to attend school. Parents should
indicate their wishes on enrolment.
BIKES
Students who ride bikes must use bikeways where
they exist. By law students are required to wear safety
helmets. Doubling and riding two or more abreast is not
permissible.
A bicycle enclosure is provided at the school. Students may
put locked bicycles in the bike racks within the enclosure.
WELLBEING>
The Student Wellbeing Department at Kirwan
High is designed to provide every student with
opportunities to meet their potential. We aim to
create a school community in which all students
feel that they belong, that they are safe and that
they are worthwhile citizens.
Suellen Johns
Head of Department
Student Wellbeing
Led by two Heads of Department (Middle
School and Senior School), the key members
of this team include the Year Coordinators,
and the Care Meeting (CAM) teachers.
Additionally, the Department liaises with
the School Based Youth Health Nurse,
School Based Police Officer, Chaplain,
Defence Transition Mentor, Youth
Support Coordinator, Guidance Officers,
Community Education Officers, as well
as our Administration and Leadership
Team. These people make up our
Wellbeing Committee.
It is without doubt that the Student
Wellbeing Department has high
expectations, however, it remains true
that if both students and staff feel
that they belong, and that they are a
part of ‘something’ both worthwhile
and great, that they will meet with
success. If we have smiling staff
and smiling students, then our
classrooms and our playgrounds
will be happy and successful
places for all!
• We want our students to want to come to school.
• We want our staff to want to come to work.
• We want everybody keen and committed to do the
very best they can, no matter who they are, where
they come from, or what they are working on.
We want the very best school we can possibly
have so that our students enter the world with
confidence, high self-esteem and pride. We
want our students to be well rounded and
socially responsible citizens who believe in
their own potential. We want our students to
be on a pathway that will lead them to their
very own success.
Programs led by the Student Wellbeing
Department include:
• Kirwan State High School Student
Extended CAM;
• Anti-bullying Workshops;
• Reach for the Stars;
• Power Up;
• Student Voice and Class Representatives;
• Leadership through Service – Year
Level Charities;
COMMUNICATION
& CONTACTS>
SCHOOL PLANNER
All students are issued with an official School Planner.
These have been especially designed for both the Junior
and Senior School. Besides clearly stating the school rules,
the Planner provides excellent organisation and study tips
for students and is a very good means of communication
with parents.
WITHIN THE SCHOOL
• Year level assemblies will be held on a weekly basis in
the Multi-Purpose Shelter.
• Full school assemblies will also be held regularly.
The purpose of the full school assembly is to publicly
recognise and applaud those students and teachers who
have been outstanding either in the sporting, academic
or cultural arenas.
• Care Meetings - On non assembly mornings, all Care
Meeting Groups will meet with Care Meeting Teachers
in designated rooms. Student notices are issued and
read to students each morning.
• Newsletters are produced and issued weekly to provide
good communication between school, parents and the
community. Our weekly Newsletter can also be read
on our website www.kirwanshs.eq.edu.au. If parents/
guardians have registered their email address on their
student’s enrolment form a link will be emailed weekly.
NOTES FROM PARENTS
Parents are asked to contact the school in writing to:
• Request that a student be permitted to leave the
school grounds for a short absence such as a dental
appointment. This note is to be handed in at the Student
Counter for recording on the computer. Students must
be collected and signed out at the Public Counter by
their parent/guardian.
• Explain absences. It is the student’s responsibility to
give these notes to the Rolls Office. Absences may also
be explained by email to the Rolls Office (absences@
kirwanshs.eq.edu.au) or phone on 4773 8108
/4773 8105.
PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS
We invite parents to be actively involved in their
child’s education. Discussion and interviews are
always most welcome. Please assist us in making
maximum use of your time by making an appointment
(phone 4773 8111).
Formal parent/teacher interview evenings are organised
after Terms 1 and 2 and reports are issued to all students.
Should parents be concerned at any time about the progress
of their student, they are encouraged to request an interim
report. This may be done by contacting the Co-ordinator of
the particular year level.
reports are issued to students at the end of Semesters I
and II. Parents/Guardians wishing to discuss reports with
staff are requested to make an appointment through the
school office.
Queensland Studies Authority Certificates are issued at the
end of Year 12 (Senior Certificate). Any certificates obtained
by students at Kirwan in Years 11 and 12 are posted out to
students in December/January of the year they graduated.
A school Exit Statement will be issued to students leaving
school at the end of Year 12. The Exit Statement is issued by
the school and indicates the level of achievement reached in
each subject at the time of exiting.
REFERENCES
When students leave school at any time after attaining the
age of 16 years they are eligible for a reference issued by
the school.
It is a student’s responsibility to apply for this reference
through the General Office.
Students must give notice when a reference is required as it
cannot be supplied on immediate request.
WHEN LEAVING SCHOOL
Similarly if a student is withdrawing from
school i.e. leaving the school, he or she should
report to the General Office for a leaving form.
When this slip is completed it should be
returned to a member of Administration.
EMAIL CONTACT AND WEBSITE
Parents are welcome to contact the school via
email the.principal@kirwanshs.eq.edu.au.
The email address of all staff and much
more is available on the school website
www.kirwanshs.eq.edu.au.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS
It is important for parents to communicate
to the school immediately if a change of
address or telephone number has occurred.
Changes must be made in writing. A Student
Details Changes form is available from the
Administration Office or the school website
www.kirwanshs.eq.edu.au.
Kirwan State High School Science Department is recognised state-wide for its innovation in science education and its focus
on engaging students in scientific inquiry into real-world issues.
The North Queensland Biotechnology Education Centre has been operating at Kirwan High since 2005. This Centre aims
to provide students in the region with an innovative Biotechnology education program. Biotechnology is cutting edge
science and is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. In the near future Biotechnology will be responsible for
curing many debilitating diseases, will see the human life span increase and will assist in restoring the environment. It is
imperative in preparing students to be “scientifically literate” that they are exposed to a biotechnology curriculum. In 2006,
Kirwan High was successful in receiving federal funding through the Australian Schools Innovation in Science, Technology
and Mathematics (ASISTM) grants. This funding fully equipped two biotechnology laboratories and allowed teachers time to
access expert knowledge from leading scientists at James Cook University in the development of curriculum. The programs
hope to provide students with a science education that is authentic, intellectually challenging and provides pathways to
tertiary and vocational futures within our North Queensland region.
2007 saw Kirwan State High School named the North Queensland Science Centre of Innovation and Professional Practice.
Selected through an open merit process, six Centres of Innovation and Professional Practice were established throughout
the State to share ideas, programs and expertise in science education. Significant State funding has been provided to
the Centres to establish effective partnerships with James Cook University with the aim of developing and implementing
dynamic and inspiring learning opportunities for teachers and students. The activities of the Centre hope to enhance
students’ scientific literacy and prepare them for life in a technologically driven world, where science knowledge and skills
are paramount.
