Queensland and New South Wales to attend this week long camp, with an
opportunity of gaining a scholarship of up to $3000 on his successful
completion of Year 12.
Xavier said the experience of meeting university based scientists and other
keen students was inspiring.
Xavier Passi
Xavier would like to study Engineering at University when he graduates from Kirwan High.
PACKING A HEALTHY LUNCH
School’s back and it’s a great time to think of healthy and
nutritious lunch ideas.
Good nutrition is important throughout life, but never more
vital than during the developing teenage years.
Young people need the right foods for many reasons:
• To give energy to participate in activities.
• To provide essential nutrients to ensure correct
growth and development.
• To supply fuel for concentration and learning.
• To create healthy habits that will last all their lives.
It is a sad reality that Aussie kids today are a long way from
the fit image that they had a couple of decades ago. With
our sedentary lives and ‘grab and eat’ style of eating, our
kids are suffering from health problems never seen in earlier
generations. We are witnessing a situation were around 25%
are overweight and many are so unfit that they are unable to
complete standard fitness tests.
Senior Leaders’
Induction
Friday 26th April
Performing Arts Centre
9.00am
All Year 12 parents and caregivers
are welcome to attend.
Lunch can provide a major part of the daily nutrient intake,
so it needs to be healthy and filling.
Think about the following food ideas to be included for a
healthy, nutritious and interesting lunch that provides bursts
of energy throughout the day:
• Crisp salad veggies.
• Fruit – cold and delicious.
• Dried fruits – great for nibbling on.
• Cheese sticks and slices – good calcium source.
• Healthy snack packs – like tuna and crackers or
cheese and crackers – there are some great choices
at the supermarket and they can be a change from
sandwiches.
• Low fat muffins or slices.
• Pretzels and popcorn.
• Frozen juice, water or long-life milk drinks – helps
keep lunches cool and quenches their thirst.
So let’s encourage healthy eating with great lunch choices.
Asthma inhaler recall
Asthma Australia have advised that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Alphapharm are undertaking a
voluntary recall of several batches of Ventolin and Asmol inhalers due to a fault in the delivery
mechanism of a small number of inhalers within each batch. This can lead to less than the full dose
being delivered for each puff.
The only batches affected are as follows:
Ventolin Batch numbers KN7170, KN7173, KN7178, and KN7179
Asmol Batch Numbers KL6790, KL6795, KL6796, KL6797, KL6798, and KL6799
If you have an asthma inhaler (puffer) which matches any of the above batches, take the inhaler
to your pharmacy and exchange it for a new one.
SWIMMING CARNIVAL REPORTS
The Swimming Carnivals for 2013 were a roaring success. With the addition of the two new houses there was a lot of competitive
spirit in the air. Congratulations to Castle house who were declared champions at the end of both the Junior and
Senior carnivals.
Age Champions were as follows:
Boys
Girls
Year 8 Evanda Hewson Myar Jones
Year 9 Jack Althaus Aubiene Thompson
Year 10 Justen Lyons Bridie Wilson
Year 11 Chauncey Heron Tiana Thorne
Year 12 Wolfram Mayr Jessica Thompson
The school team has now been selected and we wish them the best of luck for the interschool carnival.
ELLIOT HOUSE
Elliot spirit was on full display at the Swimming Carnival
with waves of green spilling into the pool. The Eaglets
from Years 8 and 9 made a very positive start on
Thursday, wrapping up the day in 2 nd position. Friday was
witness to some impressive examples of house spirit and
dedication by our senior students. The Elliot Captains led
from the front with the assistance of a team of Green. No
one could doubt the passion on display at the culmination
of the day as Elliot Eagles and the other ‘Originals’
banded together to let their cries be heard loud and clear
across the pool. A great start to what is sure to be a
successful year for Elliot.
SAINTS HOUSE
STUART HOUSE
The Mighty Sharks keep alive their awesome sporting
reputation with a second place in the carnival.
It was a tight two days of competition but Stuart House had
tremendous participation. The House Captains’ did a really
good job organising the team and as usual we had the best
war cry.
The “Shark Song” too was a highlight. It is really catchy; if you
don’t know it yet, ask a Stuart student to teach you. It was
also great to see Captain Stuart and his side kick Stewie
down at the pool. They even did a few laps for the team.
Our Mascot was also out doing his bit to build team spirit.
The House Captains want to pass on their best wishes to the
whole staff and student team.
Go SHARKS!
SAIN’T nothing we can’t do! Castle Saints have started the year off with a bang. We have proven our own slogan by being
the first house ever to win both the junior and senior swimming carnivals last week. Hundreds of
enthusiastic Castle members, dressed in crazy white outfits, blasted out their new war cry and it
was great to see so many of them keen to cool off in the pool and get into the competition. A huge
thanks must go out to our legendary house captains, vice captains and senior leaders who tirelessly
helped encourage house members to participate over the two day carnival.
We also have a number of naturally talented swimmers. Year 12 students, Wolfram Mayr and
Jessica Thompson won every race to take out age champions and are our very own Aquaman and
Aquawoman, being crowned King and Queen of the Pool! Jess’ younger sister Aubiene Thompson
is just as talented and took out Year 9 Age Champion. Chauncey Heron in Year 11 blitzed the field to also be awarded age
champion. Other standout swimmers included Annaliese Palmer (Junior Queen of the Pool), Mikayla Newman (fastest Year
10 girl) and Cody Ley (fastest Year 10 boy).
Apart from our very talented swimmers we also had an equally brilliant cheer squad who encouraged them. Students ended
both days on an adrenalin high pumped full of pride for our house. It was amazing to see such community spirit! Well done
Saints!
Magnetic Marlin
A big congratulations is in order for the Magnetic Marlins! As a
brand new house it was an incredibly impressive result to come
third overall after both Junior and Senior Swimming Carnivals.
As Marlins we have a lot of natural ‘swimmers’ who gave us
some much needed points to stay in the competition. However,
the House Captains were very impressed with many dedicated
Marlins who participated in several (sometimes ALL) events
throughout the day in order to win points for our house. A
special ‘shout out’ goes to the Age Champions from Magnetic
House: Jack Althaus (Year 9), Justen Lyons (Year 10) and
Tiana Thorne (Year 11). Marlins – you’ve made us very proud of
your efforts at our first carnival event for the year!
At the moment Magnetic House is donating ZIP LOCK BACKS
as a part of our whole school ANZAC Day biscuit drive. The ZIP
LOCK BAGS should be snack or sandwich bags that we will be
using to package the biscuits in.
Students can drop their donations into the FYC staffroom.
WE REP THE MARLINS!
SWIMMING CARNIVAL REPORTS
The Croc Report
Cook House - Swimming Carnival
The ‘Croc Pit’ was abuzz with very excited Cook students last Thursday and Friday. At 9:00am,
the Cook area was decorated, the students in house colours and a hush hung over the pool. At
9:01am, the Cook House Captains led us in our first performance of the Cook War Cry. If the
other houses seemed a little intimidated, it was perhaps understandable. The swimming carnival
was a wonderful community building event for Cook. Cook House was very ably led by our
House and School Captains Michael, Jessie, Emma, Daniel, Jono, Janaya, Regan, Nina, Matao
and Tristan. If the spirit and enthusiasm shown on Thursday and Friday is any guide, Cook is in
for a great year.
Louisa Report
Once again, we had many students from Louisa who
made us ‘proud’. Congratulations to all who attended, it
was a fantastic day with incredible house spirit. In
particular, we would like to congratulate Myar Jones who
was the Year 8 Girls Age Champion and competed in the
Queen of the Pool event (and was only marginally
defeated). A special mention also, to our strongest age
group by far, the Year 10 boys, who were keen to
compete in as many events as possible. It was incredible
to watch this group of enthusiastic students work together
to receive maximum points for our house. Our House
Leaders, as always, did a magnificent job in encouraging
and maintaining high spirits. Even though we did not win
the carnival, we should be very proud of our efforts. Well
done Louisa!
Cook’s next focus is a community project aimed at raising awareness for ANZAC Day as well
as supporting Clean Up Australia Day.
We are seeking donations of plain flour for ANZAC biscuits as well as the donation of items
that may serve as prizes for students who have demonstrated the Cook House and Kirwan
Spirit. Go Cook!
SOCCER
Rebels Football (Soccer) Club have limited vacancies in most age groups however
we are desperately seeking girls to play in the Under 8/9 Girls Only competition
and Under 8 Boys to play soccer this year. No experience necessary and full details
can be obtained from our website www.rebelsfc.com.au, coming down to a training
session on Tuesday or Thursday afternoon been 5 and 6pm at Greenwood Park,
Thuringowa Drive, Kirwan or simply phoning Ian on 0419 166080.
