in medicine in England and Australia
as well as training in Belgium.
As senior partner of a general
to be made to fit the two together.
He came to the Trust in 1999 as
Similarly if you don't participate in
the unique opportunity to shape
What's going on
around the Trust?
A true Haven
On Sunday 5th July , Haven Lodge
who have 19 contracted beds for
Mental Health (Older Adult)
invited John Gardner, Operational
Services Manager/Matron and
Donna Cullingford, Community
Mental Health Nurse inTendring
to the grand opening of their
pagoda which they had been
raising money for.
The pagoda was opened by the Deputy
Mayor and Lady Deputy of the Cinque
Port Liberty of Brightlingsea, Mr Mike
Penrose and Mrs Patricia Gardner.
It’s that time of year again -
November may seem a little
far off now but it’ll be here
before you know it; now is the
time to start thinking about
how you’re going to win the
Positive Practice Awards!
This year’s Awards will follow the same
category structure as last year, with two
awards - one for clinical service
developments and one for non-clinical.
By‘service development’ we mean
anything you have done to improve our
service users’ experience of theTrust,
hence the two categories: you don’t
need to be a clinician for your work to
be of benefit to our patients.
It turned out to be a very nice day
and everybody enjoyed themselves.
The pagoda will most definitely
benefit the 19 patients that are in the
contracted beds that John oversees.
Well done to those who organised the
fundraising and the day for Haven Lodge.
Also congratulations to all the staff for
their hard work and specifically to the
chef who provided a beautiful banquet.
Haven Lodge is run by Care UK and
we have had our contract beds there for
the past eleven years.
You are advised to discuss your
MP commends Trust’s efforts
Changes, the community drug
and alcohol team for mid Essex,
hosted a visit by local MP Simon
Burns, to help spread local
awareness of the growing need
for resources to help people
who misuse alcohol or drugs.
The team offers help to people with
physical dependencies who are ready
to commit to make a crucial change in
their lives and their families.
Shadow Secretary of State visits
The Shadow Secretary of State
for HealthAndrew Lansley CBE
MP has visited one of our teams.
The Mid Essex Early Intervention in
PsychosisTeam is based in central
Chelmsford and works out in the
community with people who are
experiencing, or are at risk of
experiencing, a first episode of
psychosis. It aims to identify and treat
symptoms early to promote recovery.
Mr Lansley said:“Today has been a great
opportunity to meet staff providing
mental health services which is a vital
part of NHS care. The team’s focus on
14 to 35 year olds is, I believe, an
essential part of mental health services.
I met an impressive team of highly
qualified people, all of whom are
committed to helping not only
individuals, but also their friends, families
and carers too. It has been a great
pleasure to meet them”.
Clinical manager Rachel Lofthouse said
"We believe that mental health problems
are just like physical problems.‘Psychosis‘
is used to describe a number of
symptoms which are often grouped
together, just like ‘flu‘ is used when
someone has aching muscles, a
headache, and a sore throat.
Mr Burns joins other local leaders in a
growing interest in how to fight rising
levels of alcoholism which is thought
to affect one in five in Essex.
Liam Flanagan, manager of Changes,
said:‘Our highly experienced team
offers practical support and expert
care.We respect confidentiality and
treat everyone without prejudice.’
Psychosis can be very frightening but it
can be successfully treated. The sooner
intervention takes place, the better,
which is why our team is here”

Leading the way in
Vocational Services
We are part of a successful bid to provide a
groundbreaking new service.
Just three areas nationwide have been selected to
become a Centre of Excellence for Individual Placement
Support (IPS). IPS is a way of doing things differently.
In an IPS scheme, people get jobs and are trained and
supported while they are working, rather than having
training and support to enable them to work.
With our new Vocational Services Manager, Raza
Ahmed who started on 6 July, we will be able to
maximize the benets of this closer working relationship
with the Sainsbury Centre. Further to this good news, we
are reliably informed that the North Essex Employment
Strategy has also been shortlisted for
09
the Essex County Council “You Make
a Difference in Essex” quality
awards to be held in September.
Meet our new Vocational
Services Manager
Raza Ahmed is our new Vocational Services Manager.
Raza has worked in various mental health settings since
1994 including CMHTs, Assertive Outreach, Primary Care
with his last post being in the third sector.
He said: ‘I am pleased to have returned to the NHS after
a break of three years and am looking forward to
meeting new colleagues, taking forward the vocational
services agenda and nding my way around Essex!’

The joint project
The Trust’s Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team and Community Day
Team began a joint project set up by Chris McArdle, service user development
worker based in Witham, in April.
A group of clients and staff meet once a week at an allotment in Chelmsford and spend the afternoon
working, chatting, building relationships and being out in the fresh air.
Sally Barnes, CPN at the Tillingham Day Hospital, said:‘There has been a lot of evidence about ecotherapy
and how beneficial it is to people with mental health problems. Being outside in the fresh air, watching seeds
that you have planted grow into edible produce, being with others in a natural environment. The work is very
focussing and you forget your worries as you are so involved in what you are doing.
‘The allotment is attended twice a week - once by CRHT and once by The Community Day Therapies Team.
Clients with mental health problems who may benefit from this project can be referred by any clinician
within the Trust. It is a wonderful way to promote social inclusion.
‘This is the first allotment in central. It is a very inexpensive project to run. It is a community in itself,
relaxing, peaceful. We encourage clients to develop their own ideas and bring their skills to the afternoon.
There is the added health benefit of being active outdoors, it is a natural way to gain exercise.’
The group is currently growing King Edward potatoes, broad beans, tomatoes, radishes, peas, sprouts,
broccoli, courgettes, spring onions, yellow courgettes, corn and carrots. Most of the seeds and equipment
were kindly donated by staff and neighbouring allotment workers.Their first success (apart from getting
rid of all the weeds) was a batch of broad beans.
One of the clients, Dean, enjoys these Friday afternoons as it rounds off the week nicely.Taking a well earned
rest in the hot weather, he said:‘I do a lot of volunteering in town during the week and it’s nice to be out in
the fresh air, chat and mix with people. I’ve been coming along for approximately three months.’
Barbara Langridge, occupational therapist student, was finishing her placement with the Trust as the group
started and has remained with the group working her schedule around the afternoon session.
The allotment is an ongoing project, weather permitting. It is a joint effort with everybody
helping out and working together as a team bringing their skills with them. For example,
George put up some shelves in the shed the day I was there.
Speaking of George, he has been with the group about two
months and enjoys the afternoon, relaxing and being around nice
people. He actually does gardening as a job so has many helpful
hints and tips. George said:‘It is a really nice way to finish the
week, it is a chance to unwind and lead into your weekend.’
David, who arrived later in the afternoon, added: ‘The rehabilitation
programme is very satisfying and rewarding as we all have
a common cause in developing our skills in communication
with others. I would recommend this therapy to anyone who
enjoys being outside and working with nature.'
Additional groups will be starting on
Thursday mornings beginning 6 August.
