14 Palm Springs International Film Festival By Angela Romeo The 26th Palm Springs International Film Festival ended on January 12. I screened 33 movies, conducted 19 separate interviews and post a few thoughts. Firstly, 1971 was a pivotal year: 71, 1971 and Limited Partnership. Secondly, that hundreds of years have done little to lessen ethnic, clan and religious tensions: Beti and Amare, No Ones Child, Corn Island. Thirdly, that the foreign film entries will sadly be seen by few in the US. Many of the films deserve a US release. A few sub-titles never hurt anyone. The point of view is often far removed from big budget, box office idol driven fluff. (Fill in your own blank here). Fourthly, I do love documentaries. Lastly, sometimes art needs to make us feel uncomfortable: The Search. Several movies did stand out. To Kill a Man from Chilean Director Alejandro Fernández Almendras is thought provoking. The movie follows the journey of a man pushed to his limits. The movie causes one to squirm because if we empathizes with and root for this person, who ultimately murders, what does it say about us The moral high ground is a slippery slope. Tangerines, directed by Zaza Urushadze, focuses on men and a crop of tangerines. Set in an Estonian village in Abkhazia in 1992, two wounded and warring soldiers, one dedicated famer and one crate maker are joined for survival and humanity. The film unfolds the notion that the roots of war spanning generations are fought for reason unknown, by men unsure of their purpose and lost on the average person who seeks only to live in peace. The exchange between the Georgian and Chechnya soldiers underscores that our differences are slight compared to our similarities. Gett – The Trial of Viviane Amsalem is making history. The film follows the fiveyear process of one woman to obtain a divorce in Israeli rabbinical courts. Directors, siblings, Ronit and Shlomi Elkabetz, have been surprised by the reaction to the film. Ronit, who also plays Viviane, wanted to shed light on the plight of women seeking to move on with their lives. A progressive society steeped in tradition, the Israeli courts have been slow to keep pace with modern society. The film will be shown at the Israeli Rabbinical Council in February. Art can make a difference and this film is perched to make sweeping changes. Spirit/Will/Loss follows three artists, painter Katie Dallem, the inspiration for Million Dollar Baby, sight challenged photographer Alice Wingwall, and musician/festival promoter Grahame Sharpe. Directed by the husband and wife team of Erninnisse Heur-Rebisz and Patrick Rebisz, this is not a film about disability; it is a film about determination. Each artist has lost something that has caused him or her to rethink his or her place in the art world. This movie highlights all that makes the human spirit an indomitable force. I was privileged to meet the not only the directors but Katie and Alice. Meeting them solidifies my belief that we are all born artists.
