The weather was great with plenty of sun
and just a little breeze coming from the
snowcapped peaks of the central plateau.
The first thing on the agenda was to
get the bikes off the trailer and up to
Scrutineering. The GSXR7/11 looked
the part and flew through inspection.
Getting through early allowed plenty
of time to check out the quality fields
turning out for the GP races. We had
a good field for BEARS and good
numbers for the pre 82 and pre 89
races, the only class that suffered
this year was the pre 72 bikes.
Once the bikes had passed
Scrutineering it was time for
Riders Briefing and both
Lindsay Pinker (Clerk of
the course) and Darrell
New (MNZ Stewart)kept
the briefing short and to
the point, however the
system for grid positions
was a little loose but everyone seemed to
accept the limitations of no transponders
and no lap timing
f a c i l i t i e s . T h i s
limitation had the
effect of removing
the pressure of
having to put in fast
qualifying times and
allowed riders to get
to know the track.
Unfortunately for
me the immaculate
looking GSXR blew
an alternator O ring
which sprayed a fine
film of oil on the
left side of the rear
wheel. This made the practice session one
which I did not enjoy. It was not until I got
the bike back to the pits did I realize why
the bike was handling so badly. This finished
my racing for the day but gave me the chance to
watch what was happening.
After the practices were over it was time for the
racing to really begin. The programme started with
the BEARS and Race one (a 6 lap sprint) was a
hard won victory to Sloan Frost riding a Ducati
1098 from Malcolm Bell on his Aprilia and Daniel
Kempthorne on his SV650. The attrition rate saw
Terry Waite on the Ducati Sport 1000, Chris Bridge
on his Ducati Fusion and Donald England on his
1987 Ducati 650 failing to finish. the GP race
was 12 laps which sorted out who had the better
stamina and ended with another win to Sloan Frost
from Malcolm Bell with Nicholas Prestidge on his
2004 Ducati 749 coming home in third spot ahead
of Daniel Kempthorne.
Pre 89 juniors was the next race up and the field
was a good mix of two and four stroke bikes. Paul
Brown on his VFR400 finished the sprint in first
spot ahead of Chris Fry on his Honda VFR400 and
Anthony Montgomery on his NC30. The 12 lap GP
event saw Anthony Montgomery on his NC30 clear
away from Andrew MacDonald who finished second
on his 1987 ZT250 and Chris Fry on his NC30.
It was great to watch the front runners work their
way through the field as
they lapped the back
markers towards the end
of the race.
Next on the list was the
pre 82 Senior class and
there was a strong field of
well prepared bikes with
talented riders fighting
for the win. Steve Bridges
had the better of the day
winning both the sprint
race and the GP on the
Ducati from Graeme Parr
on his Kawasaki. Vince
Sharpe on his Honda filled in a lonely third spot in
the 6 lap event but failed to finish the 12 lap GP
race and it was Sean Donnelly on his Kawasaki who
held on to the third spot in the GP.
12 laps was a little too far for some as we had 5 bikes
DNF in the GP event.
The pre 72 bikes were run with the pre82 class and Terry
Waite on the Kawasaki finished ahead of Dean Beatson
on his Honda CB350. In the 12 lap race the results were
reversed with Dean Beatson
coming out on top and Terry
having to nurse his bike to
the finish line
The pre 82 Junior race
one saw Peter Sales come
through and clear away
from everyone on his Honda
XR500 to win from Andrew
MacDonald aboard his
Yamaha LC 350 and Trevor
Taylor on his TZ350.. The
hard luck story of the day
went to Debbie Bridge.
Who crashed during the
first race and had her
team put in a great effort
to get her to the start line for the 12 lap event only to
have mechanical difficulties ruin the day for her. Debbie
was saan in the pits afterwards taking out her frustration
on the bike which seemed to come out bof the encounter
looking like it had been in a decent crash
The GP race again saw Peter Sale clear away leaving
Andrew MacDonald to hold second from Graham Moorhead
on his TZ350 and Trevor Taylor in fourth spot.
The last race on the card was the pre 89 seniors and in
the 6 lap event Terry Fitzgerald raced off to a great start
only to have mechanical difficulties sideline him on lap
two. This left Phil Duxbury and Randall Dixon both riding
GSXR1100’s along with Nick Turner on the immaculate
Honda RC30 to fight for the lead. But riding through
the field Richard Mosley
who had problems during
the practise session with
his Kawasaki ZXR 750
finished in first place with
Phil Duxbury7 in second
and Nick Turner in third
spot. The 12 lap race was
far better for Terry and his
Ducati and he started well
and got better as the race
developed taking the GP
in impressive style from
Phil Duxbury and Nick
Turner. We lost Richard
Mosley half way through
and also Paul Lance on
the Kawasaki GPZ900 who
looked like he was heading
for a top four finish until the bike decided it had had
enough for the day.
Events such as the 2008 GP do not happen without a lot
of preparation behind the scenes so a heartfelt thanks to
Lindsay, Dione and the team for coming up with a fantastic
days racing at the Taupo track. This was the first event
run completely by the NZPCRA and as a first attempt it
went well.
Phillip Island 2009
Entries have now closed and we have a total
of 16 bikes heading across the ditch next
year to give the Aussies a little push along.
The mighty TZ350 dominates the team with 8
of the 16 bikesBig bikes are down this year
with only 4 going in the container.
Unfortunately the Z-man had to relinquish
organising this annual pilgrimage to
concentrate on other pursuits and has handed
the reins over to Smithy, Russell and Vince
(scary!)
Just shows you it takes 3 of us to do what the
Z-man was doing. Thanks Z-man for all the
work you’ve done, but don’t worry it’ll still be
there next year for you to pick up!
To all those entered, please get those license
application forms and personal insurance
applications etc completed and sent off when
you receive them.
Looks like we have a good bunch of riders
and supporters again this year and with most
of the team staying at the Waves Apartments
in Cowes the social side of the trip should be
a blast finishing with a party planned for the
Sunday night.
Labour Weekend Classic
Motorc ycle Register Races
Labour weekend and the first race meeting for the NO 1
Plate for the NZPCRA which is incorporated in the CMRR
Labour Weekend meeting. The CMRR always put on an
enjoyable meeting with a relaxed atmosphere and a great
little barbie and a few beers to finish off with. As usual
with running at this time of the year the weather was
unpredictable and Saturday arrived cold and overcast.
The meeting is split over two days so it allowed for a little
more time between races. First race of the day was the Pre82
juniors and Peter Sales on his TM435 got away to a good
start followed by Carl Hanna on his Ducati TT2 and Trevor
Taylor on the TZ350, By lap three Trevor had worked his way
to the front and Randy Scott on the CBRR was up to fourth
spot just behind Graham Moorhead and his TZ350. With
the white flag waving Randy managed to get past Graham
Moorhead and the finishing order was Trevor Taylor first,
Peter Sales second and Randy Scott in third.
Next up was the senior class which was a mix of Pre 82 and
Pre 89 senior machines. It was Craig Smith on his Suzuki
GS 1000 who made the most of the first lap to come across
in first place with Nick Turners RC30 in second and Phi
Duxbury on the GSXR7/11 third ahead of Brian Deadman So
it was pre82 first and fourth with the Pre 89 bikes second
and third. Russell was forced to return to the pits when his
visor blew off at the kink at full noise. But was not allowed
back in the race after fitting a replacement.
By the end of six laps we had Craig out in front with Nick
Turner in second and Phil Duxbury in third spot. Brian’s
weekend was beginning to turn stale with his bike developing
a misfire which was to haunt him for the weekend.
The second race for the Pre 82 Juniors saw Trevor Taylor
pull away from the rest and settle into first spot leaving
Carl Hanna and Graham Moorhead to argue over second
spot, unfortunately Grahams TZ showed the eccentricities
of two strokes and locked up on the third lap leaving Randy
Scott to come through into third, the way the race ended
The last race for the day for the Senior Classes saw Craig
Smith and Phil Duxbury head off leaving Brian Deadman
to pull up with engine issues before the end of lap one.
On the third lap Phil started to have misfire problems
which saw him drop back down the field and Nick Turner
come up to second and a hard charging Paul Dobbs on
the Norton come into third spot overcoming Phil Clarke
on his GS1000 who ended the race in fourth.
With the weather during the day flitting between overcast
to showering it was with a sense of relief that everyone
went away hoping for a better day on Sunday.
Sunday dawned but not clear and warm, rather wet and cold, it
was going to be a hard day with only one race for each class.
First up it was the junior’s and it was a depleted field that
formed up on the grid. With the track wet it was the TM of
Peter Sale that went to the front ahead of John Carter on
the Suzuki GSX400 and Glen Walker-Holt on his GPZ550.
As the race unfolded Trevor Taylor moved through the field
eventually taking second spot just ahead of John Carter
but the man of the moment was Peter Sale who ended the
race in First almost 50 seconds ahead of the rest.
For the senior race of the day it was showery. Off the start
Smithy bogged which allowed a number of riders through.
Large puddles had formed on the inside of turn 1 which
every one avoided except for Smithy who obviously had
forgotten all about this particular track condition and
thought this was a good opportunity to slip up the inside
and get a few positions back. Yep you guessed it, the big
aquaplane and lucky not to lose it (some good shots of
it on the Highside Photography website) The wet track
also caught out Brian Deadman on the first lap as he had
a big off coming over the mountain with Smithy almost
binning it again as he was forced to take to the wet grass
to avoid the Z-man lying around on the track.. The race
continued and the showers turned to heavy rain When the
dust had settled it was Nick Turner who got the best start
and he went on to hold out Phil Duxbury .Further back
Russell Barker, who had to avoid Brian Deadmans bike on
the first lap was fighting with Phil Clarke on his GS The
race finished with Nick Turner first, Phil Duxbury second,
Russell in third and Jim Manoah on his Kawasaki giving
Russell a hurry along and coming home in fourth.
Brian’s bike luckily only suffered the usual superficial
damage; tank damage, bars, footpegs and a little more
lightning up of the fins on the barrel. As a result it looks
likely that this will put the Zed man out of the rest of the
number 1 plate series. We hope he can get the machine
back together and we look forward to seeing his smiling
face when he next turns out.
Reece Sharpe Memorial Trophy 2008
For those unable to make the NZPCRA Annual General
Meeting and prize giving, I wish to reconfirm to the
other Postie members of this year’s presentation to
“The Z-man” aka Brian Deadman.
Reece’s trophy is “Awarded for Dedication and
Achievement”, and just like the other previous
recipients (Craig Smith, Alistair Wilton, Dick Waterer,
Greg Sharpe and Lindsay Pinker), I am very proud
to see Brian’s name join this exclusive list of names
engraved on this trophy.
Dedication and achievement amongst all of us can be
measured in different ways, and the previous trophy
winners have made enormous contributions to Post
Classic racing in addition to having competitive racing
careers. Similarly to last year, I asked all previous
trophy recipients to form a selection committee and
recommend a nominee and make Reece’s trophy
more of a collective decision. Like last year we had
good discussion over this and it is great to see we all
formed an immediate unanimous decision.
For the Sharpe family, Reece’s trophy has gained a
lot of significance this year. We have followed the
sporting performance of several other members of
Reece’s rugby league team and are convinced he
would have become a prominent sportsman. If a
talent scout was on hand years ago when Reece
was playing, this person would have recognized
the brilliance of three people within this team, one
now plays for the North Harbour Rugby team, the
second one plays for the “Roosters” NRL team and a
significant try scorer, and Reece would have fielded a
similar position I’m sure. All sports was his interest
and he backed this up with academic achievement
as well, he had his mother’s brain, sure had her
competitive spirit.
Brian has become a significant member of our
NZPCRA and overall an inspiring character. A man
to respect for his bike preparation, pit set-up, his
