Myers to Lead<br />

Academic Affairs<br />

Gary L. Myers, Ph.D., dean of the<br />

<strong>College</strong> of Arts and Sciences and professor<br />

of English at Mississippi State University,<br />

has been named as the new vice president<br />

for academic affairs and dean of the<br />

Dr. Gary L. Myers faculty at <strong>Young</strong> <strong>Harris</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

He holds a Ph.D. in English and<br />

creative writing from the University of Houston and earned his<br />

B.S. in education with an English major from the University of<br />

Nebraska and his M.F.A. in English and creative writing from the<br />

University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop. He joined the Mississippi<br />

State University faculty in 1989 and has served in numerous roles,<br />

including director of The Institute for the Humanities, director of<br />

freshman English and director of creative writing. Prior to that, he<br />

served as chairman of English and assistant professor of English at<br />

Mercyhurst <strong>College</strong> in Pennsylvania.<br />

He has published two award-winning books of poetry, titled<br />

Lifetime Possessions and World Effects, and his poems have<br />

appeared in numerous publications throughout the United States<br />

and Canada.<br />

YHC selected Dr. Myers after conducting a national search,<br />

following the news that Associate Professor of Communication<br />

Studies Ron Roach, Ph.D., who held the position during the 2011-<br />

2012 academic year, has chosen to return to the classroom fulltime.<br />

“Our search committee was extremely impressed with Dr. Myer’s<br />

experience, personality and creative vision,” said <strong>Young</strong> <strong>Harris</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> President Cathy Cox. “He has an abiding interest in and<br />

commitment to the liberal arts and higher education, along with<br />

a good perspective on what small colleges can do to enhance the<br />

student experience.”<br />

“Best in Show”<br />

<strong>Young</strong> <strong>Harris</strong> <strong>College</strong> was recently awarded “Best in Show”<br />

and “Gold Winner” at the Higher Education Marketing Report’s<br />

27th Annual Educational Advertising Awards for its new<br />

admissions travel brochure “Dare to Explore More,” which was<br />

first introduced in the fall of 2011. The single-sheet brochure<br />

unfolds multiple times to reveal a breathtaking aerial image of<br />

the YHC campus and the surrounding mountains.<br />
