Letter from our Headteacher
Annwyl pawb / Dear all
The last newsletter of the academic year is an opportunity to celebrate the good
work at Gwernyfed and reflect on the many successes in school life.
This year’s Key Stage 3 results have shown an increase in the higher levels 6 and 7
showing our Year 9 have risen to the challenge of improved performance. The
numbers achieving Level 8 shows our brightest pupils are pushed to perform at
their best. Early indications are that pupils in Year 11 have achieved good BTEC
and OCR National qualifications in I.T. These auger well for continued whole
school improvement when the GCSE results are published on August 22 nd.
Our whole school Attendance has increased but still is not at its expected level.
We will continue to demand pupils be in school to ensure they reach their potential. The Governors in
September will consider whether holidays in term time will NOT be authorised. Your views on this are welcome.
Pupils will have received their full reports by the end of this term. Any views and comments I guarantee will
be considered and responded to. It has been a pleasure reading these reports and recognising the efforts of
pupils.
The new school day is now working well. Staff believe lessons of one hour are improving learning, and there is
less wasted time in pupils moving between classes. Particular thanks must go to Powys County Council
Catering and Transport Departments who worked with the school to ensure a smooth introduction in June.
Study Club is available every evening until 4pm.
The school community continues to be active. An excellent summer concert and inclusive sports day (for
example the staff 8x50 relay team!) was enjoyed by all present. Trips have gone to London, Germany, Cardiff,
North Wales and local tourist attractions. Many have achieved Duke of Edinburgh awards, an achievement to
be proud of.
The reaction of everyone following Naina’s passing away was moving and humbling. Can I thank everyone for
the way all were supported at this time who shared their positive thoughts and memories of a smiling popular
young person.
We now as a school look forward to next year. New Head Girl Lucia Jones and Head Boy Patrick Scruby have
already made an active start in their roles. We welcome the team of ESTYN Inspectors to the school on 16 th to
20 th September, who we believe will recognise the progress in improvement all at Gwernyfed are striving for.
Further details regarding the Inspection are on the school website, including details of how parents can give
their views on our performance.
Finally some farewells. Best wishes to Years 11 and 13 in their future chosen paths. Many thanks to Mr Owen
Evans (Science) and Mrs Di Nicholls (Office after 16 years) who depart. Mrs Helen Davies (Welsh) takes up a
promoted post at Brecon HS in September. I’m sure all will be proud to say they were valued members of
Gwernyfed High School.
Wishing all pupils and staff a well earned summer break. As a History Teacher I will achieve one of my ‘must
visit’ destinations by going to Berlin, then return to work in a place described by the Welsh football manager
Chris Coleman when he visited as a ‘great school with fantastic pupils’.
Diolch yn fawr / Thank you
Naina
Wear Purple for Naina Day
On Friday 28 th June, Gwernyfed High School organised a charity day in aid of the Naina Fundraising
Campaign. Pupils took part in a non-uniform ‘Wear Something Purple’ day, with many pupils sporting
purple wristbands to support the cause. At lunchtime there was a cake sale organised by the Sixth Form
which was very popular! In addition to the cake stall, there was also a coin line, and face painting, where
pupils could have a purple heart painted on their face. Music played throughout and the atmosphere was
great.
There were also stalls available to collect sponsors for the Mudrunners and for Hannah’s head shaving event.
Raffle tickets were also sold.
In total we raised over £400 for Naina Fundraising which takes the schools total so far well over £2000.00
Brecon 3-4-5 Road Racing
I thought that you might like to know of some Gwernyfed success. A few weeks ago saw the completion of the
Brecon 3-4-5 road racing series that is run by Brecon AC and as a school we did rather well:
Fun Run series (1.5 miles x 3 races)
Amy Sinclair – Female runner-up
Brychan Price-Davies – Male winner
Evan Price-Davies – Male runner-up
3-4-5 Series (3 mile, 4 mile and 5 mile runs)
Gabriel Kay - Under 20 Winner
Matt Jones – Under 20 Third place
Ben Dunster matched Gabriel in the 3 and 4 but was revising so missed the 5 miler!
Stafford Rees – M45 Winner!
Gill Aldworth and Sarah Rees also won their respective age categories.
Well Done to All !
Sports Day at Gwernyfed
On Thursday 4 th July we held our annual sports day. The weather was ideal, dry and warm but not too hot. The
students are in Houses; either Mynydd or Dyffryn and they are encouraged to volunteer to take part in track
and field athletics. Their teams are organised by captains taken from their own year group and helped by sixth
form.
The field events take place in the morning and all students watch the afternoons track races. Over 80% of the
school take part in the athletics with many doing several events.
There are many outstanding efforts, with students pushing themselves to their limits and overcoming the
nerves that go with athletics competitions. A lot of personal best performances are achieved and students feel
a pride in getting actively involved. It is also an opportunity for the more serious athletes to excel.
In a competition that awards over 3000 points, the final result in the junior competition was not decided until
the final race.
Dyffryn won the Junior contest but for the third consecutive year Mynydd won the senior cup and were the
overall winners.
Elin Howells, Mynydd House
Captain reports.....
The weather was perfect and it
heightened the spirits of pupils in
both Mynydd and Dyffryn as they
went about competing in numerous
events. Every year group displayed
excellent talent with school records
being broken in various competitions. In the afternoon the whole school gathered to support their team mates
in the track races where each pupil showed great team spirit in cheering for their friends in both houses. Mrs
Morris along with a group of Year 10 pupils were busy whilst the races were on, selling ice cream to pupils
and teachers in order to raise money for Naina Fundraising. After a full day of competitions the results were
counted and announced. Dyffryn won the most points in the lower school and Mynydd won the most points in
upper school. The final score resulted in Mynydd being crowned the champions of the overall day. The day
was enjoyed by everybody and was a massive success. Well done and congratulations to everyone who
competed. Hopefully next year will be just as successful!
International Youth Meeting – Aurich 2013
On the 14 th June 9 students from the sixth form headed to Aurich for this year’s International Youth Meeting.
There were participants from the Basque country, Finland, Poland and Germany. We didn’t arrive until late so
only had time for a quick hello before settling down for the night.
The next day we took part in a Town Rally
organised by the host group. As we competed in
International groups, this gave us an opportunity
to get to know people from the other countries
and also a little about the town too. Later on we
were introduced to the secret friend game. This
involved writing to someone every day until the
international dinner and both leaders and
participants took part in this game. In the evening
we all went to the fancy dress welcome party
where the theme this year was super heroes or
fictional characters. (See photo)
On the Sunday we watched a documentary called
‘Super size me’ which was about a man who only
ate McDonalds for a month. This tied in with the theme of this year’s meeting ‘Health and Sports as an
important value for young people’. In the afternoon we went to Timmel to go canoeing followed by a BBQ.
This was then followed by presentations from the Germans and Welsh. The rest were heard the next day.
On Monday evening we had games organised by the Basque. They were sneaky with their games as Tom was
hit on the head with a spoon, Patrick sat on a wet sponge, Alice had water
poured down her trousers and Rhiannon was scared by a ‘mummy’! We then
enjoyed a bit of karaoke where we sang Sex Bomb, Delilah and Gogoak (a
song from the Basque country).
On the Tuesday we went on to discuss the theme and came up with slogans
such as ‘Hugs not drugs’ and ‘PE: To do or not to do. There is only one
answer’. In the evening it was our chance to organise an evening. We played
Wink murder, Fruit Bowl, a senses game and the leek game. (see photo)
On the next day we walked across the mud flats at Waddensea to Baltrum
but were delayed by thunder storms.. This evening was organised by the
Germans. We sang a song, played a few games and learnt a dance which we
used for Public Action.
On Thursday we spent most of the day in our workshops (Dance, Public
action, Newspaper, Sport, Photography and Radio). In the evening the Polish
organised some games for telling the future and then we all took part in a
dance competition which the Welsh group won.
On the Friday we spent the morning in our workshops and then we went and rehearsed for the public action
event which took place on the Saturday. In the evening we had a few games such as Wife carrying and tug of
war organised by the Finnish followed by a midsummer party.
On the Saturday we went into Aurich and twice performed our public action show. This was in the middle of
the town at the busiest time of the day! In the evening we then had the International Dinner where it was
revealed who everyone’s secret friend was.
Finally on the Sunday we said our goodbyes and headed to Breman where we flew home, tired but having had
a marvellous time.
FilmClub News
FilmClub was launched this year at Gwernyfed and has presented many great films; from sci-fi blockbuster
Prometheus to anime classic Spirited Away, Oscar winning Hugo to 80's bratpack movie Pretty In Pink.
FilmClub member Jenna Myatt (year 10) writes:
I've been going to Film Club pretty much since it first started up with a group of my friends, and it's a really
fun thing to do after school. We watch a range of different movies there, so everyone sees a film genre they
enjoy at some point. You can request for a movie to be played, my friend asked for one of her favourites [The
Breakfast Club] and we all really enjoyed it! The huge 5m screen in the drama studio actually makes it better
than going to the cinema, plus we share snacks and have entry for free. I normally like sports clubs, but for
some variety I tried Film Club... I tagged along with my friends... now, I guess you could say I'm hooked. We all
love it, and I would really recommend it.
FilmClub returns in September, every Wednesday from 3.15pm.
Child Development Visitor
Sally, the daughter of Mr Prosser, kindly agreed to bring her 15 week old daughter, Poppy, in to school, to
allow the year 10 Child Development class to observe the capabilities of a child at that age. Poppy was not a
shy baby, but was very happy most of the time and would often share a few smiles with the class. We were
told that Poppy is fascinated by the movement of her fingers and toes as she is amazed by her control over
them. For her age, she is a very good sleeper and will make it through the entire night without interruptions.
However, she does not nap as much as other children her age, and will only sleep during the day for about one
hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon. It was very interesting to be able to compare the
capabilities of Poppy to other children around her age and to the normal average capabilities. Towards the
end of the visit, Mr Prosser joined his granddaughter and we all had a group photo with the happy family. The
whole class enjoyed the company of Sally, Gareth and Poppy and would all love them to make another visit
very soon. By Isabella Morgan (Year 11)
An interview with the Head Boy and Girl
The Interview by Caitlan Sampson
As the new pupil leadership team have recently been announced it
seemed appropriate to learn a little more about our new Head Boy,
Patrick Scruby, and Head Girl, Lucia Jones.
Both Lucia and Patrick have huge ambitions for when they finish Year
13. Patrick wishes to pursue a career working with computers or in
physics. He is still deciding where he wishes to study once he leaves the
Sixth Form next year. Lucia hopes to pursue a career in writing or maybe
as a theatre technician.
We all have hidden talents whether we wish to admit them or not. When
asking Patrick if he had any hidden talents he replied ‘I am good at
climbing’. Known to many, Patrick enjoys his climbing and has competed
in many competitions in the past. Earlier this year he came 6 th in the
Welsh final of the British Youth Climbing Series. I then asked Lucia if she
had any hidden talents she wishes to share and she replied ‘I can juggle
if that counts as a talent’ but she also loves any forms of creative expression
like art and drama.
Throughout your school life your parents, teachers and friends all give
you advice on one thing or another. When asked Patrick said the best
advice he was given was ‘always take a towel’. The best advice Lucia
said that she read was from an interview with Ed Sheeran and he said
‘Everything will be ok in the end. If it’s not ok, it’s not the end’.
I asked Patrick and Lucia for what they thought their most valued attributes
were. Patrick simply said ‘my hair’ whereas Lucia replied ‘my
height’.
Mrs Jenkins previously set the question for this interview which was ‘if
you could be a character from any novel who would it be and why’
Patrick replied Kelsier from The Mistborn Series because he’s a good
leader and a good character. Lucia answered Celandine, from a series of
books called The Various, because she is independent and strong and
gets to explore impossible worlds.
The question for the next interview, which Patrick and Lucia have
decided on, is ‘If you were a soup, what would you be’
Hay Festival
Years 7 and 8 visited Hay festival on a blustery
day in May.
Hay Festival brings school children together to
think about the world as it is and to image how it
might be.
Led by Head of Year 7, Mr Hanks, who provided
an itinerary for both year groups, it was a stimulating
day with engagement from the pupils asking
questions and listening to the life story of the
successful animater of Bob the Builder, Curtis Jobling.
Year 7 had a talk from representatives of Film
Club and the British Board of Film Classification
BBFC, who decide what rating a film gets. This
was very interesting talk which engaged our
pupils and presented different perspectives when
watching films. We had a lot of hands up from our
group and they were keen to debate the issues.
My thanks to all the teachers who made the day
run as safely and smoothly as could be expected.
The pupils, who attended, as usual behaved well
and made us all proud of you and the school.
Child Development Class Visits Primary School
It was on the 19th June when the
new year 11 Child Development
class ventured out to local primary
schools and nurseries for the whole
day. We all worked well with the
children, interacting with them and
learning all about their different
aspects of development. Activities
that we did with the children included
playing in the sandpit and helping
with a puzzle. The day was thoroughly
enjoyed by every pupil, and
we all found the experience very interesting.
Hospitality and Catering Visit
On the 27 th June 2013 our year 11
Hospitality and Catering class went on
a trip to Hereford where we visited a
variety of hospitality settings such as:
Wetherspoons, Castel House Hotel and
McDonalds.
On our visit to each of these places we
had a tour though the business by
somebody who worked at the
restaurant/hotel. During our tour
around the building and surroundings
we asked many different questions
about the hospitality business such as:
What season is the busiest time of the
year
Do you have a qualified first aider on
the premises for the customers and
staff
What type of qualifications do you
need to get a job here
Overall we enjoyed our day in these
places and would hope to experience
another day like this again.
Milkshake Madness!
Last Tuesday year 10 Hospitality & Catering class held
an ice cream milkshake sale in the school. First we decided
on the flavourings. We decided on strawberry,
chocolate and banana. We added toppings which included
Oreo, cookies and cream. We were very busy, the
milkshakes were very popular and we sold over 90
milkshakes.
On the beautiful summer evening of
Thursday 4th July, the music
department at Gwernyfed High School
held its usual Summer Concert to celebrate
the talents of our many musicians.
Music at Gwernyfed!
The backdrop to the concert was a
stunning visual presentation of
photographs and images on our large
cinema screen. Year 8 pupils Tegan,
Amy, Alice and Chloe chose some great
visuals to highlight the work and
activities of pupils across the school. A second montage showed work from the new Gwernyfed Art
& Design website, showcasing the amazing talent of the pupils.
With our Head Teacher as compe re for the evening, students entertained to the usual high standard.
Singing club opened the concert with their renditions of “Titanium”, The Script's “The Man Who
Can't be Moved”, and Adele's “Set Fire to the Rain”. This was followed by solo and group items from
some of our youngest students right up to year 13. These included a lively jazz number on clarinet
by Sam Davies in year 8, Owain and Ross rocking out on guitars, and the eclectic mix of items from
Mr Cooper's guitar students. A particularly memorable performance was from our latest ukulele
players, Ned and Jack in year 8 who have started
a new trend!
Recent Music Exam Successes:
Jac Whitelaw- grade 3 clarinet
Felicity Jones- grade 6 piano
Elsa Thomas – grade 5 piano
Seren Corbett – grade 5 theory with merit
Good luck to Annie-Rose Metcalfe (yr 11) who is awaiting her
results for her grade 8 flute (the highest grade you can reach). Also
waiting for results are Sam Davies (grade 4 clarinet) and Mollie
Doyne (grade 1 flute).
Congratulations to you all!
We raised over £300 on the night which is to go
to Naina's Cancer Fund.
Congratulations to all who took part and thanks
to the PTA for again providing the evening's
refreshments. The next concert will be just
before Christmas.
We are also pleased that once again the school are hosting a
summer Rock School. Please contact Ian Cooper, iancoopermusic@hotmail.com
Interview with Chris Coleman
On the 14 th of July, a group of the new A2 Media Studies
students were given the opportunity to interview the
Wales International FC Manager, Chris Coleman. During the
morning class periods before the interview the entire class
prepared questions for him, including, ‘In what ways does
the media publicity affect players’ attitudes and
performances’, and, ‘Does the media ever intrude on your
personal life’ The interview lasted over twenty minutes
and tested Chris Coleman on his experience with the media
in his life and career. FC Manager gave the students lots of
advice that he has lived by, that has always helped him, and
placed a lot of emphasis on how you shouldn’t allow the
media to influence you. Chris Coleman stated both during
and after the interview that the questions asked were quite
difficult and he was impressed with the level of
thoroughness of the questions. He also said that the questions were things he had never prepared for
and was taken aback by the students’ questions; a moment of pride for those that interviewed him.
The students were very quick and eager to take such an opportunity, and thoroughly enjoyed their
first chance to interview someone who had achieved a level of fame. After the interview, the group
had a photograph taken with Chris Coleman and were later featured in the Brecon & Radnor
newspaper. At the time, the A2 Media Students had just started working on their MS3 Coursework;
they’re tasked with creating a media production of their choice. As this opportunity came up, they felt
as though the experience they gained from performing the interview was something they could put to
use within their coursewo.
Liam Carey (Year 13)
Questions that the students asked Chris Coleman.
Did seeing football in the media influence you to start a career in football
What was your experience commentating on the World Cup with ITV like
How do you prepare for international press conferences
Does the media ever intrude on your personal life
How do you deal with the media pressure
How do you think football players are portrayed in the media
In what ways does the media publicity affect players’ attitudes and performances
You worked in Europe managing; how does the press coverage of football differ
Psychology Students visit Cardiff
On Thursday 27 th June our Psychology class went on
a trip to Cardiff to see the Brain Research and
Imaging Centre in Cardiff University. We left shortly
after the end of registration so when we arrived we
had some time to spare in the town centre. When
we went in for our talk, they took us to see a little
slideshow on what they do at the centre and all the
different types of brain scans. We then split into two
groups and first visited a mock MRI scan down in
the basement. It was very interesting but very loud
due to all the magnets needed within the scanner.
We then swapped over and visited an electromagnetic
scanner, where we could each have a go
inside. Once inside we were told to do certain things
such as blink and breathe deeply so the others could
read the brain actively results on the computer
screen. We then said goodbye and made our way home- Overall it was a successful trip and a great day out.
