2013 Annual Report

Message From the 2013 President
To understand where we are today, it is important to know where we’ve come from.
AWT was founded by a handful of members for a specific purpose—to represent independent water treatment
companies. Today, we have 550 members from across the country and internationally. Keep in mind that AWT’s
membership has experienced growth over the past five years, during a time of consolidation in the industry as
companies have merged; larger companies are now purchasing many of our smaller member companies.
AWT’s vision is to be the “voice of the global water treatment industry,” yet we are still only the voice of the small
water treatment companies.
Advocacy
Over the past few years in particular, we have concentrated heavily on our related trade organization
(RTO) relationships. Advocacy has played a big role, helping to ensure that AWT member interests are
being represented within the overall industry.
In 2013, we continued to enhance the visibility of AWT to outside groups, such as the International
Facility Management Association (IFMA), so as to market our water treaters to the end users. In turn, we
expect this to lead to more business for you, our members.
We also became members of, and partners with, ASTM, through which we will work to create water
treatment standards. The members of the Standards Task Force are currently developing the first
standard with ASTM on “Monitoring Cooling Tower Water Systems.” AWT has also worked closely with
ASHRAE to have our interests represented regarding Standard 188P. AWT submitted comments on
the proposed standard during the comment periods. In addition, AWT is now officially a voting member of
the 188P Committee, and we are having greater influence on the U.S. Green Building Council and the LEED
system because we have representation on the Water Efficiency Technical Advisory Group (WETAG).
All of this means that AWT is being recognized as an industry leader. Our goal is to continue this trend
until AWT truly is the “voice of the global water treatment industry.”
Benchmarking Survey
Turning our focus to internal matters, AWT conducted another financial benchmarking survey this
year, updating the information from 2010. The survey results showed that the water treatment industry
continues to grow and prosper.
GHS Training DVDs
The AWT Legislative/Regulatory Committee continues to keep members informed on the new Globally
Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) legislation. GHS training videos
are available online through the AWT bookstore.
President continued
Involvement
Finally, if you have read my President’s Message in The Analyst, watched my videos, or sat in
the board room, you know that I love quotes from books and movies. And when I feel they are
impactful, I use them. From the Last Lecture, Randy Pausch tells us:
• We cannot change the cards we are dealt, only the way we play them.
• Have something to bring to the table; it makes you more valuable.
• You’ve got to get the fundamentals down, because all that fancy stuff isn’t gonna work.
• Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you wanted.
• Loyalty is a two way street.
• Be prepared; luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity.
In the movie “The Rookie,” when Jimmy Morris was trying to determine if he should follow his
dream of becoming a 40-year-old rookie in the Major League, his father told him one of his
grandfather’s quotes: “It’s okay to think about what you want to do until its time to do what you
were meant to do.”
With all this said, play the hand, bring something to the table, get the fundamentals down, learn
from experience; if you want someone to be loyal to you, be loyal to them, and be prepared. Think
about what you want to do, but make the decisions that lead you toward what you were meant to
do. This also applies to AWT—when we were small, we could only do what we knew, but now that
we have grown, we have to conduct ourselves as a larger organization within our industry.
So, with that, I challenge you to get more involved! Now is the time—as we are growing and
expanding—to join a committee, contribute to the listserv, help out with a project, and let your
voice be heard. We’re looking for volunteers to help us outline a new direction, target new
markets, and work on innovative projects.
I can’t express enough how much I have enjoyed getting to know so many of you, because really,
you are what makes AWT so special.
I’d like to give a most sincere and heartfelt thank you to all AWT board members, committee
chairs, committee participants, and staff for all of their hard work and efforts this year.
Through AWT, you share your collective wisdom; you work to elevate the field of water treatment.
Sincerely,
Mark T. Lewis, CWT
Committee Reports
AWT’s success is heavily dependent
on the voluntary participation of
its members—water treatment
professionals who contribute their
industry knowledge, enthusiasm,
and expertise to our organization.
These volunteer contributions make
AWT unique, creating a powerful
force to advance the water treatment
industry.
Business Resources Committee
Chair: Caroline Hardie
The Business Resources Committee was
quite active in 2013. The committee has
been tasked with providing members with
business information and resources. This
year it organized and held 10 successful,
complimentary webinars. It also started
developing a list of sample business materials,
such as business and marketing plans.
Bylaws/Nominations/Policies
Committee
Chair: Jim Lukanich, CWT
In 2013, the Bylaws/Nominations/Policies
Committee implemented new financial policies
and procedures that provide consistency with
the new bylaws and reflect how AWT currently
operates. The committee also spent a good deal
of time reviewing AWT’s process for identifying
and recruiting board candidates to help us find
the next generation of leaders.
Certification Committee
Co-chairs: Scott W. Olson, CWT; Robert D. Lee, CWT
The Certification Committee continues to strive to make
the Certified Water Technologist (CWT) designation
the industry standard. The Certification Committee,
in collaboration with the Education Committee, is
developing the curriculum for the Service Technician
Certificate Program. It also updated articles and quizzes
that can be completed by CWTs to obtain credits toward
recertification.
Convention Committee
Chair: Casey Walton, B.Ch.E., CWT
The Convention Committee put together a
very exciting program for the 2013 Annual
Convention and Exposition. More than 1,000
attendees at the Mohegan Sun took advantage
of the great educational content and the
opportunity to learn the latest practices in
the industry from experts in the field of water
treatment. The convention also provided a
showcase for our exhibitors, enabling members
to see and touch the latest innovations in water
technology. The annual convention continues to
be the highlight of the AWT year.
Education Committee
Co-chairs: Bruce T. Ketrick Sr., CWT;
R. Trace Blackmore, CWT, LEED AP
The Education Committee offered two highly
successful sessions of the Sales Training
Seminars, Service Technician Training
Seminars, and Water Treatment Training
Seminars in 2013. The committee saw record
attendance this year, and in 2014, it will
work with the Certification Committee to
begin developing curriculum for the Service
Technician Certificate Program.
2013 AWT Annual Report — 5

Committee Reports continued
Legislative/Regulatory
Committee
Co-chairs: Earl E. Martens; Eric Fraser, CWT
The Legislative/Regulatory Committee was
very busy this year. The committee developed
an in-depth article on GHS for The Analyst.
It also obtained GHS training DVDs, which
are available for sale through the AWT online
bookstore. Finally, the committee continued
to keep the membership informed of current
legislation and regulations through the
Legislative Update.
Long Range Planning
Committee
Chair: Mark R. Juhl
Each year, the board conducts a
comprehensive review of the Strategic Long
Range Plan. The plan defines the continuing
mission of AWT and details the activities
undertaken to enable it to accomplish that
mission. Of particular importance to members
is that this plan illustrates how the association’s
resources will be utilized over time. AWT is
committed to reviewing the plan on an annual
basis to ensure that the organization is fulfilling
its mission and meeting its goals.
Membership Committee
Chair: Marc Vermeulen, CWT
The Membership Committee is focused on
membership retention and growth. AWT
continued to attract members from across
North America and as far away as China,
India, and Italy. The committee is dedicated to
its mission of identifying potential members,
evaluating current member satisfaction, and
establishing new member benefits.
Marketing/Communications Committee
Chair: Pam Simmons
The Marketing/Communications Committee
accomplished a great deal this year. The committee
continued to coordinate and expand the Student
Education and Enrichment Development (SEED) program,
which encourages students to enter the field of water
treatment. Currently, 47 students from 26 colleges and
universities participate in the program. The committee
also promoted AWT and CWTs to the International Facility
Management Association (IFMA) and the Association
for Facilities Engineering (AFE). Finally, the committee
continued to heavily promote AWT services and
programs.
Standards Task Force
Chair: Jay Farmerie, CWT
AWT recently developed a task force to
research creating a water treatment standard
of care. The Standards Task Force is working
through ASTM to create new water treatment
standards. The members of the task force
joined the ASTM D-19 Water Committee and
have begun developing the “Standard Practice/
Guide for Properly Monitoring Cooling Tower
Water Systems for Most Efficient Operation for
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability.”
Technical Committee
Chair: Allan R. Bassett, CWT
AWT continues to be the leading technical organization in the
water treatment industry, providing superior information on
the latest technologies. The Boiler Subcommittee is working
on a treatment guidelines position paper on aluminum
heat exchangers. The Cooling Subcommittee published
the “Biomatrix on Oxidizers for Evaporative Cooling.”
The Pretreatment Subcommittee updated the Softener
Calculations Workbook and is working on the Dealkalizer
Workbook. The Special Projects Subcommittee updated the
convention peer-review process and is working on articles for
The Analyst. And finally, the Wastewater Subcommittee put
on a successful Wastewater Seminar in 2013.
