HILLESLEY VILLAGE
DIRECTORY
The village lies within the Parish of Hillesley and Tresham, which covers
some 6 square miles. The official map showing the boundaries is
displayed in Hopkins Hall. About 590 people live within the Parish, with
there being 346 electors on the 2008 Hillesley register (which includes
the houses at Lower and Upper Kilcott) and 92 electors at Tresham.
Most of the parish lies within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty and the Cotswold Way runs to the east of Hillesley along the
Kilcott Valley.
The Parish Council has 7 members (5 for Hillesley Ward and 2 for
Tresham Ward) and is elected every 4 years. In Hillesley, the Council
owns and maintains the allotments off Chapel Lane, the bus shelter,
and the war memorial. However, the playing field and all its facilities,
including Hopkins Hall and the children’s play area, belong to the
Hillesley Winter Jubilee Trust, to which the Council makes an annual
grant towards maintenance.
Apart from the above direct responsibilities, much of the Council’s work
is concerned with making approaches to either the District Council or
the County Council to carry out necessary maintenance or
improvements, particularly in relation to highways, street lighting, and
grass cutting. The Council is consulted and gives its views in respect of
all planning applications, and about many other local and national
matters.

Hillesley Happenings is a free newsletter for residents published 10 times a
year. It is edited by Carol Dawson (842014).
Refuse is collected from the roadside on Tuesdays in black plastic bags
provided by Stroud DC, with garden waste taken away if placed in special
green bags as sold at Kingswood Post Office. Recycling – green boxes on
alternate Tuesdays.

In addition to the above, Wotton-under-Edge provides virtually a full range of
shops and services, many at competitive prices, including a very good
greengrocer, DIY shop, other building suppliers, a carpet shop and curtain
makers.

As indicated on the map, there is
an extensive network of public
footpaths and a bridleway leading
out from the village. To the east,
one can go up the truly beautiful
valleys penetrating the Cotswold
escarpment, whilst less strenuous
- but still very pleasant - walking
will be found by going in any of
the other directions.
Virtually all of the paths in the Parish are signed from the road and mostly
way marked, with stiles and footbridges where necessary.
