The Garden Gurus
2006 Autumn Series
Fact sheet
Segment Title: Garden Centre of the Week
Heynes Wholesalers
Episode: #11 10/06/2006
Presenter: Nadia Matijevic
The elegant gardens featured were designed by Adelaide Garden Design and the majority of
plants were sourced locally from Heynes Wholesale Nursery because their plants are grown
outdoors and are hardened to our South Australian conditions.
If you’ve fallen in love with either of the Norwood gardens, they will be on the market shortly so
you could be the lucky people who get to move in, relax and enjoy these stunning gardens.
Layered planting provides great interest in a small space. Even in a narrow bed they have
achieved 5 layers of planting. A tree, a climber like the gorgeous Crimson Fantasy which will
grow up the fence, a low shrub, frondy foliage for contrast and a ground cover like Ajuga in the
foreground.
Hedges provide structural form and look great with the classic simplicity of the homes and they
don’t need to be high maintenance. The trick is to choose hardy dwarf growing varieties like New
Zealand Xmas bushes. Darlese has fresh green foliage while Mini xmas has red stems, both
varieties need less pruning than larger forms.
Dianella Tas red is another low maintenance plant. It has red tones that complement Mini Xmas
beautifully. Photinia robusta was selected for the large pots because like Acmena Allyn Magic
their new spring growth is bright red, creating consistent colour highlights in the garden.
A great deciduous tree is the white flowering Crepe myrtle, called Natschez. It’s a medium sized
tree with year round ornamental interest. Perfect in this north facing front garden because when
the leaves are gone the house is warmed with much appreciated winter sunshine.
Native Frangipani trees were selected for their tall, slender, evergreen growth to eventually soften
the look of this large wall. Underneath Viburnum tinus is planted along the boundary, it has white
flowers that are a real treat during winter while a new Dianella, called Little Jess is planted as a
border for textural interest.
Whoever buys these elegant homes and gardens can feel confident that the plants were
selected from premium quality stock and were raised on recycled water. If you’d like any of the
plants featured in this story, the wholesale nursery is not open to the public, so the best way to
access Heynes stock, is to ask for their plants at your local garden centre.
Street appeal is paramount when designing any front garden. Working with the scale of these
homes meant including large custom made features, oversized pots and plantings which balance
the architectural mass.
