the 22 nd draft to the amendment of the Commodities
Regulation (Mineral Oil Regulation) of the German
Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer
Protection.
Tests have proven that the new innovative barrier
provides also a comprehensive protection against
“cross-contamination” from outer and transport packaging.
All environmental benefi ts – FOODBOARD is
fully recyclable and compostable – and commercial
arguments of a recycled paper-based packaging industry
will retain entirely
and will be expanded
beyond the aspect of
the functional barrier
against mineral oil migration.
First industrial productions
have been successfully
implemented. The
engineering is working
to capacity and FOOD-
BOARD is just about
being patented. The
topic of mineral oil migration
from packaging
to food is thus not only
embanked but can be re-
garded as being solved because of the innovation of
Mayr-Melnhof Karton.
Holistic search for a solution
After the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture
and Consumer Protection proclaimed a holistic
approach, the efforts of the entire supply chain to
contribute to the reduction of migration shows that
there is no lack of movement on this volatile issue:
On the one hand, publishers rethink the development
of mineral oil-free newspaper ink due to the fact that
the often used mineral oil-based inks are mentioned
as a problem cause. This issue is still in an initial stage.
On the other hand, food manufacturers examine
the use of inner bags as a suitable barrier. Due to high
investment costs in the modifi cation of packaging lines
and the requirement of many nutrition goods for
an air exchange, this approach is clearly diffi cult. As
almost as impracticable seems to be the possibility of
a separate collection of newspapers – acceptance issues
in the society and in municipalities are the major
reasons. Last but not least, a subsequent sorting of
recovered paper is not feasible as an alternative due
to high costs and questionable safety.
Especially cartonboard producers achieve fi rst successes:
German, Austrian, Dutch and Slovenian manufacturer
Mayr-Melnhof Eerbeek 1661 – 2011
Tradition and modern times – 350th anniversary.
For world history, 1661 was a very quiet year: Louis
XIV, le roi soleil, took over the reign in France. In
Mauritius, the last Dodo was still alive.
In the Netherlands, the 80 years war with Spain
ended – swords were converted into ploughshares.
Unfortunately, the soil of the region around
Eerbeek – the Veluwe – was sandy and the harvests
poor.
Thus, an entrepreneur named Jan Claasz Slijper
decided to establish a paper manufacture, called
Het Klooster (the cloister) next to the Eer-’beek’
beck. Since the 11 th century, already many water
mills existed along the numerous streams that run
from Western Veluwe down to the Rhine river and
his confl uent Ijssel. Originally used for the processing
of grain, many of them became paper mills
due to the growing demand for paper since the
invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg.
A paper mill of this period can still be visited
in the open air museum of Arnhem.
350 years later, Jan Claasz Slijpers’ manufacture
turned into a highly modern plant, which is producing
cartonboard for 100 years, exactly at the same
spot where Het Klooster was once located.Through
generations, almost every family had someone
working in this mill – despite world wars, economic
downturns, good and bad times.
Since 1990, Eerbeek is part of the Mayr-Melnhof
Karton, and a modern Multi-Fourdrinier machine
produces virgin fi bre-based Albaplex, Linoplex,
Silvaboard and Greenplex. With a new coating
section, cross cutter, smoothing and drying section,
the capacities for high-quality GC boards
have been increased during the passed years up to
140.000 tons per year.
mineral oil during the board production. Furthermore,
special improved recycling cartonboard without
grades based on recovered newspaper is offered. The
initial uncertainty of food suppliers and retailers has
now again given space to a solid optimism.
Reason enough, to celebrate
the 350 th anniversary of
Mayr-Melnhof Eerbeek!
The celebrations started already
on 24 th March with the
rising of welcome banners
on the mill gates, labelled
trucks ship the message
throughout the country.
An Open Door day is planned
for 24 th September, where
the entire plant can be visited
and everybody is invited
to see the cartonboard production
in real.
A production site with tradition
is ready for the future!
Liner from Neuss – quality from the Rhine
Increased focus on Liner at
FS Karton, Neuss.
Located at FS Karton in Neuss, the latest and biggest
cartonboard machine in Europe is producing
successfully for over 20 years liner top grades for
high quality offset corrugated board packaging
(MM Topliner from 180 – 250 g/m 2 and MM – Liner
230 g/m 2 ). To enable an optimized delivery of the
growing market demands for liner grades, new in-
vestments have been made in 2011. The most signifi
cant change is the increased speed of the machine.
The technical equipment of BM 5 makes a product
range possible, that corresponds with the more and
more challenging requirements for print brilliance
and gloss:
● A four Fourdrinier wire system that ensures an
smooth paper structure and excellent opacity
Kolicevo: Upgrading BM 3
End of this year, Kolicevo Karton in Slovenia is going to upgrade its virgin-fi bre
board production: BM 3 is scheduled to run again from January 2012 as four
Fourdrinier swing machine of latest technology.
Thus the cylindrical wire of the wet end will be replaced
by a multi-Fourdrinier system for the top,
protection, middle and reverse layer.
The mill becomes state-of-the-art and is then capable
of responding easily to varying market requirements.
The new production unit will be set up for a highquality
GC2 cartonboard, similar to “Excellent
Top” of Baiersbronn, and the grammage range will
be between 215 and 400g/m 2 . Depending on market
demand, the FBB fi bre volume of the MM Karton
Group can be increased by 200.000 tons per
year, strengthing its position as growing producer
of GC qualities in Europe.
The benefi ts for customers are an even higher liabilty
of product supplies because of fl exible deliveries
from different production sites, just as it
is already performed since July 2010 with our recycling
qualities thanks to the multi-mill concept:
Two machines are able to produce one uniform GC
quality, with a maximum capacity of 300.000 tons
per year.
Together with a Styrian machine constructor, this
machine was built solely for MM Karton.
It is called “swing machine”, because even with
its width of 4,40 meters, the operaters can switch
● A ‘Yankee’ cylinder with a diameter of 6,40 metres
and a weight of 120 tons to improve the
smoothness of the liner
● An optimisation process with a triple coating (in
total approximately ca. 24gr/m 2 ), while a blade
knife guarantees perfect gloss results for print
All these assets are used also for the X-Liner, which
became part of the portfolio two years ago. The
X-Liner surface is ideal especially for fl exo-print
requirements (pre-print and post-print), so it provides
excellent ink absorption and print results
(grammages between 145 g/m 2 and 280 g/m 2 ).
FS Karton is therefore a more and more preferred
supplier of the corrugated board industry with special
liner qualities for offset and fl exo-print. The
identical structure of all liners makes it even possible
to combine these papers together.
Constant investments and a highly motivated work
force are the key for FS Karton for effi cient and
high-quality production of liner qualities and other
available GD products.
C O M P A N Y
between carton qualities within a few hours only,
still guaranteeing a consistent and equal quality
of the GC products.
With this equipment, MM Karton remains leading
producer of WLC qualities and will grow signifi -
cantly in the FBB business.
