dear ladies and gentlemen,
dear business partners!
2012 has begun like the previous year ended: with exciting
news on latest technologies and the launch of
new product qualities from Mayr-Melnhof Karton.
During the last months, customers were reducing
their stock, but now purchase orders are increasing
again. In order to respond in the future even better to
market dynamics, MM Karton has strongly invested:
With the turn of the year, the successful launch of the
new BM3 with swing mode in Kolicevo can be reported!
In time and uninterrupted the work was fi nished,
and now the completely refurbished machine is producing
again Kromopak TM and now also the reknown
quality Excellent Top TM . MM Karton can thus increase
its market share of virgin fi bre without the need of losing
any other businesses. During the “swing” multilayer
Fourdrinier technology, the machine can switch
within hours to recycling cartonboard production.
Recently enhanced was the distribution channel of
MM Karton: Separated according to FBB, WLC, Liner
and Overseas, a new business unit „Services“ has
been added, to aid sales operations (MM offi ces,
agencies, merchants) in logistics and system support.
Between 3 and 16 Mai, MM Karton was present at the
world‘s biggest trade fair in Dusseldorf. Apart from
numerous customer talks and consultations, it became
clear that we are on the right track with our innovation
and technology strategy.
On 14 June, the Pro Carton PPV Austria Design Awards
were dedicated to young design students. I am personally
looking foward to welcome these young people
for one week in our Group, so they can experience a
complex insight into our industry.

MM X-Liner aqua-fi t TM
:
New name for new quality
In the last issue of this newsletter, a new hardsized
quality of the MM X-Liner TM was presented, which is
particularly suitable for refrigerated food and dairy
products. To make even clearer how well this liner
shields against moisture, it is hence called „aquafi
t“. This shall emphasized that it even when it comes
in contact with moisture, it will not affect its
stability or breaking strength thanks to its special
sizing. The Cobb value of 100g/m 2 in 1800 seconds
indicates that clearly.
Creative corrugated packaging and thus liner are
enjoying an enormous growth the last years - no
packaging material is more popular. No wonder,
because hardly anything protects so well and effectively,
ensures safety and hygiene, transports
more information to consumers and helps them
with purchase decision!
Also on the upswing is „shelf-ready packgaging“,
i.e. packaging, safe transportation, quick storing
are (motto „easy open, easy close“) in combination
with an appealing presentation. Especially for this
segment fl exographic varieties such as the MM X-
Liners are aqua-fi t and the MM X-Liner are
particularly prepared.
For a long time, it‘s no longer just about „brown
boring boxes“ - new printing techniques allow increasingly
higher quality solutions thanks to highquality
printing and modern machines produce attractive
„eye catcher“ set accents on the shelves:
The provide new incentives to trigger buyers. These
„silent salesman“ offer endless possibilities to
increase the attractivity of the product.

square meters of corrugated cardboard - and the
numbers continue to rise. Sustainability in manufacturing
and recyclability of the material are the
major reasons.

Following the successful launch of MM Digicarton
TM as fi rst FBB quality homologated for HP Indigo
presses, an additional solution, named MM
Digicarton Eco TM , has been released onto the market.
Just as her virgin fi bre „brother“, this recyc-

MM Digicarton Eco :
WLC brother has arrived

To the WS6000 and WS6600 the most modern
of its kind, the WS2000, WS4000, WS4050/4500
and WS4600 have now been added. Sheet-fed
tests were successfully performed with the HP Indigo
5500 and resulted in the appropriate.
The certifi cation confi rms brilliant results and runability
of these digital presses - three stars for
best score. So these qualities fi t perfectly into the
growing market of digital print.
Since in digital printing no minimum order quantities,
designers can quickly and easily create prototypes
or customized products that are excellent
just as the fi nal product and have absolute colour
fastness. Due to the excellent runability, it comes
also very handy from a technical point of view.
MM Digicarton Eco is a highly resource-effi cient
and sustainable solution, because it is not only
produced from renewable resources, but it is the
result of the multiple usage of fi bres. Tailor-made
for digital printing, this high-quality carton leaves
also the cost disadvantage of digital printing materials
to the past – and thus the market more and
more interesting.
MM Digicarton is available in the grammage range
230 to 275gsm, and MM Digicarton Eco from
250 to 320gsm.
NEW QUALITIES
Multicolor Mirabell TM
at the ProCarton/
ECMA Awards
After many years with different packaging materials,
the premium coffee manufacturer illycaffè
decided to change to cartonboard. The
Goal was to still achieve the impression of a
metal packaging, but using a sustainable and
light material. In close cooperation between
MM Karton and the converter Lucaprint, this
was brillantly achieved with Multicolor Mirabell
TM (MCM) 400gsm and lead to the ECMA
award for the category „sustainablity“.
According to the jury, one of the decisive reasons
for the award was that a packaging material
like this clearly highlights the sustainable
advantages of cartonboard due to its renewable
raw materials, its lightness and its biodegradability.
Additonally, it arrives at the converter
fl at and thus saves even more storage
and shipping costs. By using several fi nishing
techniques, the versatility of cartonboard packaging
could be impressively demonstrated.
MCM TM is produded in a grammage range between
230 to 650gsm at four prodution sites.
Thanks to the MultiMill concept of MM Karton,
customers of higher quanties have an improved
supply reliability - the same quality is
available from different locations!

Curtain Coater Gernsbach
Improved quality with optimised use of raw materials
After the launch of the world’s fi rst curtain coater
in Frohnleiten, this new technology was also implemented
at Gernsbach mill, Germany. Just like a
real curtain, the coating evenly is spread over the
cartonboard.
The installation of the curtain coater was accompanied
by a general refurbishment of the BM2,
and was successfully completed by mid-December
2012. A signifi cant step for the benefi t of both company
and customers: Compared to conventional
coating processes, a better and more homogenous
surface leads to an optimized visual opacity and ensures
a better product quality with the best possible
printing and colour results. The unison positive
feedback from converters and brand owners confi
rms this result impressively.
With the renovation of the drying segment, energy
effi ciency was also increased. This improved the
CO2 balance and the already high level of environmental
sustainabilty.
The investments in Gernsbach and Kolicevo emphasise
the strategy of MM Karton, as technology
and cost leader to improve constantly to implement

Only ten months after the decision on this major
project, work was completed in less than four
weeks by the end of last year. In addition, this break
was used for investmens in stock preparation and a
unique water circulation system. A packaging line
provides the most advanced delivery service in Europe.

About 500 workers and 30 companies were involved
in this mission - and the result is impressive: A
new Excellent Top TM with an even surface, improved
new measurse to increase customers value and effi
ciency by using succesful, user-oriented innovation
in all business areas.

quality can be produced in even larger quantities,
thanks to the MultiMill concept of MM Karton – offering
improved supply reliabilty.
A sample of this extremly versatile and popular cartonboard,
which scores especially in terms of printability
and stable quality, can be found as insert
to this newsletter. It is available in the grammage
range between 215 and 450gsm.
Thanks to new technology, MM Karton can now
switch between FBB and WLC qualities according
the market demand.

MM Karton at the world‘s largest
industry trade show
Between 3 and 16 May, the 1,800 exhibitors expected
a similar storm of visitors to last time - the
trade fair had been booked out for weeks. However,
this year quality was over quantity - apparently
less people but more specialists with clear
ideas and goals.
The focus was the further merging of online and
offl ine media, especially advances in digital prin-

products and goods for so-called adaptation
medicine, operating in Russia, the CIS countries,
Europe, Asia and the United States.

solution that has been homologated for use with
the HP Indigo digital printing machines.
At the stand of print machine producer KBA, a test
run of Kromopak was successfully conducted.
„Experalta“ by Siberian Health
Printed on Excellent Top TM 275gsm
The converter is “Promis”, one of Russia’s leading printing
companies, specialised in high-quality full-colour cartonboard
packaging for pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, and
partner of MM Karton from the very beginning. On the basis
of their experience with Excellent Top TM from our Baiersbronn
mill, Promis were among the fi rst to test the new Kolicevo product
- with positive results.
This folding box was printed on 275gsm Excellent Top TM of
Baiersbronn, the previously mentioned GC2 quality, which is
now also produced in Slovenia - ideal for very large orders from
30,000 tons per year maintaining the highest quality.
The product shown is a hydrophilic oil, combining the natural
cleaning powers of herbal oils and water to form a skin-friendly
cream that cleanses the face without leaving a greasy residue on the skin. The extra-mild oil is
made from pure vegetable ingredients and suitable for all skin types, particularly sensitive skin.
„All perfect - especially the colour fastness“,
was the comment of Jürgen Veil of KBA.
At the same time, a new cooperation between
MM Karton and the Israeli enterprise Highcon
has been announced. Their machine Highchon
Euklid brings the cut and cease process from an
analogue to a digital workfl ow and speeds up
clearly completition.
When the European directive for greater product
safety comes into force in 2013, MM Karton is
ready with its optimized coating for 2D Matrix
code qualities: The special coating of Excellent
Best 2D, MCM 2D and Supra 2Denables
packaging manufacturers to meet these regulations
in terms of printability, drying time and excellent
reliability. Matrix codes such as QR codes
or similar code recognition systems offer an interactive
added-value, an amazing link between
online and offl ine media to provide consumers
with additional product or safety information.
