ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH To encourage healthy public policy and healthy planning, HCI makes submissions to all levels of government and develops policy positions on specific matters. This year it has developed a position statement on climate change in recognition of the major health and environmental impacts that will potentially affect people of the Illawarra. As part of our work in this area, HCI took part in the State Government’s NSW Coal and Gas Strategy public consultation meeting, presented by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure and also attended by members of the general public. HCI also attended the Australian Institute of Urban Studies forum where the City of Sydney’s carbon reduction strategy was presented. HCI takes part in the Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority NRM Reference Group, and attended a meeting to discuss the natural resources management (NRM) Priority Action Statement review and government changes to NRM. HCI provided support and advice to a number of community environmental protection groups, such as Wollongong Climate Action Network, Futureworld Eco-Technology Exhibition Centre, attending some sub-committee and board meetings, Save Killalea Alliance, Save Sandon Point Coalition, Rivers SOS, Wollongong Transport Coalition, ‘Royal Connection’ coalition for green corridor protection between the Royal National Park and the Illawarra Escarpment, and the National Parks Association. HCI attended a State Government forum to assist with prioritising local issues in relation to the NSW Bike Plan, and consulted with its own Illawarra Active Transport Taskforce . HCI met with Illawarra Councils and Office of Environment and Heritage to discuss funding from the ‘Clean Air Healthy Commuties’ grants, for Bike Plan revision and bikepath mapping. COMMUNITY BUILDING HCI has been an active participant in the South-West Community Connect coalition of community organisations and community members working together for the wellbeing of communities in SW Wollongong. As a member of the Community Belonging Working Party, HCI has been involved in capacity building for local organisations to attract and recruit volunteers within the Dapto and Unanderra areas. HCI has continued to participate in the community network, Southern Suburbs Taskforce who meet monthly to address local and common issues in the south-eastern suburbs of the Wollongong local government area. Many programs are designed to develop community connectedness and networks. Food Fairness Illawarra (FFI) Healthy Cities Illawarra administers and provides secretarial support to the Food Fairness Alliance. This is a voluntary not-for-profit alliance of community groups, individuals, agencies and government organisations that address issues of nutrition, food security and sustainability, food quality and access for all to quality food. The alliance continues to attract new members. The alliance sets overall directions, operates working groups, comments on policies and plans of other organisations, identifies research and identifies ways of improving access to quality food for disadvantages. It also operates a website. Work this year has included: Development of food security planning resource for local councils to inform local government Development Control Plans and Local Environment Plans. Organisation of a community event to celebrate five years of FFI and to launch the Low Cost and Free Meals Directory, funded by the 3 councils and the Illawarra Food and Biodiversity Grant. Development and launch of the FFI website http://www.foodfairnessillawarra.org.au Pursuit of relationship and funding opportunities through Illawarra Business Chamber membership. Submission to the Calderwood Development re food security and loss of local rural land. Support for local Food Rescue Organisation OzHarvest. Annual Report 2010 -2011 Page | 6
