a pearl of
meeting

GEORGE Hook entertained
the main guild meeting at
the beginning of November
talking about his family
mother-of-pearl business.
It was started in 1824 and
was passed from father to
son, his own father worked
there until he was 94.
At this time there were
many mother-of-pearl industries
in Birmingham making
buttons, knife handles,
buckles and also inlay items.
The shells were imported
from Australia and Japan
and the blue iridescent
abalone shells came from
Japan and Mexico.
He explained how a shell
was cut to get the greatest
number of buttons from it.
George is passionate and
amusing about his work. His
factory is now the only one
left in Birmingham but the
pearl buttons and buckles
are so expensive because
they are handmade that he
only does special orders.
For social studies, social
historian Ray Sturdy spoke
on The Extraordinary Vesta
Tilley. Born in Worcester in
1864 as Matilda (Tilly) Alice
Powles, she was one of 13
children. Her father Harry
was a china painter and was
a musical tramp entertainer
in his spare time.
He later became manager
in Gloucester Theatre. This
is where Vesta first went on
stage, aged four.
After rising to the top of
the bill, Vesta retired to help
her husband, Sir Walter de
Frece with his political
career as an MP.

TOWNSWOMEN
AFTER working on the wall
hanging displayed at the
Community Centre, the arts
and craft group turned its
talents to decorating a tree
in Sedgley All Saints
Church.
The subject was a story
and the group chose The
Hungry Caterpillar.
Members crafted items of all
the goodies consumed by the
caterpillar and ended up
with him as a butterfly at the
top of the tree.
The Christmas party was
a great success with delicious
food provided by all the
members. The evening
ended with carol singing.
The next meeting is storytelling
by The Ukulele Lady
on January 19 at the
Sedgley Community Centre.
Visitors and new members
are always welcome.
Speaker’s travelling tales
AT the November meeting,
chairman Hilda Hathaway
was pleased to welcome two
new members, Savi Chandy
and Urmila Sathia.
A letter of thanks has been
received from the Queen
Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham
for the guild’s donation
of £150 to the children’s
unit.
Following a sponsored
walk which raised £165, a
CANNOCK
TOWNSWOMEN
cheque was sent to the
Princess Royal Carer’s
Trust.
Speaker for the evening
was Peter Martin who gave a
slide show of his travels in
India and Nepal. The background
music and wonderful
camera work made one feel
part of the experience,
giving members a real
insight into the culture and
daily life of the people.
The guild meets on the
third Tuesday of the month
at 7.30pm. at St Luke’s
Primary School, New
Penkridge Road. There is
disability access and parking
at the front of the building.
