Our economic contributionRio Tinto contributes considerably to the Australianeconomy each year, through the employment, suppliercontracts, investments and profits our business generates. In 2011 alone, we paid close to A$6.9 billion in taxes tofederal and state governments.Australia has long been a keymarket for our company and we areproud of the significant contributionwe make to its economic prosperity.Since the year 2000, we haveinvested more than A$40 billionin Australia through capitalexpenditure and acquisitions.Despite ongoing volatility inthe global economy, we continueto invest in long term projects, with billions of dollars of projectseither under constructionor approved. These projects provide amuch-needed boost to regionalemployment and generatedemand for services and materialsfrom local and national suppliers. We directly employ more than20,000 people across Australia, and many more contractors. We are proud to be the largestprivate sector employer ofIndigenous Australians, whonow make up eight per centof our workforce.Naturally we work for the benefitof our shareholders, many of whominvest in us via their superannuationfunds, but we also work hard toensure the benefits of mining reachpeople in every corner of Australia.AluminiumEnergyIron ore1Rio Tinto AlcanWeipa bauxite mine and project1Coal operating sitesHail Creek Mine (82%)1Iron Ore operating sitesHIsmelt ® (60%)22345611Yarwun alumina refinery,Queensland Alumina Ltd (80%)Pacific AluminiumBoyne Smelters Ltd (59%)Gove bauxite mineGove alumina refineryTomago Aluminium (52%)Bell Bay aluminium smelterCopper and goldNorthparkes (80%)DiamondsArgyle2345267Kestrel Mine (80%)Blair Athol Mine (71.2%)Clermont (50.1%)Bengalla (40%)Hunter Valley Operations (80%)Mount Thorley (80%)Warkworth (55.6%)Coal ProjectsKestrel Mine Extension (80%)Mount Pleasant (80%)Uranium operating sitesEnergy Resources of Australia (68%)2 Mesa J (53%)Mesa A (53%)3 West Angelas (53%)Brockman No.2 & Brockman No.4Channar (60%)Eastern Range (54%)Hope Downs (50%)MarandooNammuldiTom PriceParaburdooYandicooginaPorts4 Dampier5 Cape LambertSalt operating sites6 Lake MacLeod (68%)7Dampier (68%)8Port Hedland (68%)3

Rio Tinto in AustraliaThe businesses2012Iron OreRio Tinto is the second largest producer of iron ore in the world, and most of our production is in Australia. Our operations inWestern Australia’s Pilbara region are fast becoming one of thelargest integrated mining projects in Australian history. Our Pilbara trains take theequivalent of eight returntrips to the moon each year.48In the Pilbara, our 14 mines, threeport terminals and 1400km railnetwork are integrated in a waythat allows us to respond rapidlyto changes in demand. We have significantly expandedour Western Australian operationsduring the past 10 years. Todayour Pilbara trains haul around630,000 tonnes of iron ore fromour mines to our ports eachday – travelling close to 6.5 millionkm a year; the equivalent to eightreturn trips to the moon.We propose to expand our Pilbarairon ore capacity by more than50 per cent during the next fewyears, to 353 million tonnesannually by 2015.Dampier SaltRio Tinto is the world’s largestsalt exporter. Our majority-ownedsubsidiary, Dampier Salt Limited,is part of our Iron Ore group.Dampier Salt produces more thansix million tonnes of salt a yearat three locations in WesternAustralia: Dampier, Port Hedlandand Lake MacLeod. The most abundant source ofsalt is the ocean, but it can alsobe produced from undergroundbrines or from solid salt geologicalformations. At our Dampier and PortHedland operations, salt is producedby evaporation of seawater usingenergy from the sun and assistedby the wind.At Lake MacLeod we produce saltfrom underground brines that are10 times more concentrated thanseawater. At Lake MacLeod we alsomine gypsum, which is commonlyused in plaster board.Rio Tinto MarineRio Tinto Marine transports about150 million tonnes of seabornecargo to markets around the worldevery year. Given the vast quantitiesof iron ore we export, Rio Tinto IronOre also oversees our marinedivision, which owns and chartersships to transport our products. Our shipping professionalsmanage all aspects of the supplychain, including vessel selection, operational safety, scheduling, portefficiency and cost management.
