Books for a better futureRio Tinto helps deliver books and reading activitiesto almost 96 per cent of new parents in WesternAustralia – reaching 30,000 children annually.We partner with local governments and the StateLibrary of Western Australia to fund the BetterBeginnings Family Literacy programme.Since 2005, 150,000 families in Western Australiahave been reached by the programme.In 2011 schools and libraries helped distribute booksto more than 17,000 children, including children in 65remote Indigenous communities.Research by Edith Cowan University found theprogramme has had a positive impact on modifyingbehaviours and changing perceptions among children.Footy Means Business inRio Tinto-AFL partnershipThe Footy Means Business partnership betweenRio Tinto and the AFL is an innovative leadershipdevelopment programme that links young Indigenousmen with employment and education opportunities.The programme offers Indigenous men aged between18 and 24 a chance to gain exposure to elite AFLtraining and corporate networking opportunities tostrengthen their leadership and teamwork skills.AFL regional development officers, in collaborationwith our businesses, select around 50 participantseach year based on their football ability, localcommunity engagement and their potential to serveas role models. We then match them with a Rio Tintoor AFL mentor to help develop their skills.The programme is committed to helping participantsto enter the AFL Draft, full-time employment oraccredited training or education.The partnership strongly supports Rio Tinto’scommitment to Indigenous employment.
