Conserv<strong>in</strong>g Weeli Wolli Creek<strong>Rio</strong> <strong>T<strong>in</strong>to</strong> is work<strong>in</strong>g with Traditional Owners <strong>in</strong> thePilbara region of Western <strong>Australia</strong> to reduce m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gimpacts on the culturally significant Weeli WolliSpr<strong>in</strong>gs and Creek system. Located near Hope Downsm<strong>in</strong>e, parts of the creek and surround<strong>in</strong>g land aresubject to Native Title claims by the Nyiyaparli andMartu Indja Banyjima.Traditional Owners believe the spirit Yarduba, ara<strong>in</strong>bow serpent that guards permanent waterholes,lives <strong>in</strong> the creek. The state’s Department ofEnvironment and Conservation has also listed thearea as a priority ecological community.In 2006, <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>T<strong>in</strong>to</strong> met Traditional Owners andestablished the Weeli Wolli Creek Co-ManagementBoard. Every three months, the board and eldersmeet to monitor environmental impacts on the creek,and exam<strong>in</strong>e scientific f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs.The result is a forum for shared learn<strong>in</strong>g andunderstand<strong>in</strong>g: the traditional owners work toprotect their cultural heritage and we work to m<strong>in</strong>esusta<strong>in</strong>ably. The board also helps tell the widercommunity about the traditional knowledge andvalues of the creek system.Weipa project to safeguardnew crab species<strong>Rio</strong> <strong>T<strong>in</strong>to</strong> Alcan has discovered a potentially newspecies of freshwater crab near Weipa on Queensland’sCape York Pen<strong>in</strong>sula. We made the discovery dur<strong>in</strong>genvironmental surveys that were carried out for ourSouth of Embley Project, which aims to extend bauxitem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on our exist<strong>in</strong>g lease near Weipa.S<strong>in</strong>ce discover<strong>in</strong>g the eight-legged crustacean, wehave jo<strong>in</strong>ed forces with experts from the QueenslandMuseum to conduct further studies to <strong>in</strong>crease ourknowledge, and to ensure the appropriate safeguardsare <strong>in</strong> place for the crab species.W<strong>in</strong>da W<strong>in</strong>da Creek, where the crab was discovered,will also be protected from m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g by anenvironmental buffer system that exceeds regulatoryrequirements.The discovery of the crab demonstrates how theenvironmental processes we undertake as part of anym<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g project can make a significant contribution tothe knowledge base of local environments.
