Headmaster’s Welcome
On behalf of the Board of Governors and the whole Abbey Community I wish to take this opportunity to
welcome you all, especially our returning Graduates and their parents to this very important evening in
the Abbey Calendar. Although there has been a very short period since this group of students left the
school, it is very rewarding for myself and all the teaching staff to see that so many of these fine young
men have returned here tonight to join in our celebrations.
I would also like to welcome and thank our distinguished guest speaker Mr Gerard O'Hare for accepting
our invitation to attend this evening. As you can see from our prize-giving booklet Gerard on leaving
university joined his family construction and investment companies and elevated it to one of the top 100
companies in Northern Ireland. He then established a very successful investment and property company,
which has a major stake in the present City of Newry such as its ownership of the Quays Complex.
Gerard was at the centre of the huge campaign to raise Newry to City status, a campaign whose success
owes a great deal to Gerard's leadership and drive. He was delighted to accept our invitation to present
certificates and special awards. This is what we have come to expect from the Abbey student always
