He is a long term activist and current chairperson of CAJ (the
Committee on the Administration of Justice) - Northern Ireland's
primary human rights non-governmental organisation, and is on the
Executive Committee of NIACRO and Community Restorative Justice
Ireland. He is currently writing two books, one on truth commissions
and another one on amnesties as an element of conflict
transformation.
Kieran attended the Abbey from 1978 to 1985 and completed A levels
in French, Spanish and History before moving to QUB where he
obtained his degree in Law. He completed his MSc in Criminology in
Edinburgh in 1991 and a PhD at QUB in Law (part time) in 2000.
Kieran is a native of Newry (Sheepbridge) and includes both gaelic
football and soccer as his hobbies. He played gaelic for Saval and the
Abbey and was a member of the successful Corn na nÓg winning
squad of 1982. He remains a keen Liverpool supporter and five a side
player though he admits his talents were and are best exhibited in the
post match analysis rather than on the field! He lives in Belfast and is
married to Lesley and they have a daughter (Órlaith) aged 3. Kieran’s
Abbey links are further strengthened since his wife spent three years
on the teaching staff of the Abbey (1989 – 1992). In his spare time he
is an enthusiastic couch potato. In particular, he is an aficionado of the
Sopranos and claims to have learnt everything he knows regarding
management, motivation and bathrobe attire from Tony Soprano!
