Headmaster’s <strong>Welcome</strong><br />
Good Evening<br />
A very warm welcome to our Annual Prize Giving. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Abbey</strong> school<br />
community, Governors, staff, past pupils, parents and graduates<br />
gather tonight to celebrate the many outstanding achievements of the<br />
past academic year.<br />
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our graduates. It is great to<br />
see you all back in the <strong>Abbey</strong>. Also a special welcome to our<br />
distinguished guest speaker Professor Kieran McEvoy. Kieran<br />
attended the <strong>Abbey</strong> from 1978 to 1985. He was a member of the<br />
successful Corn na nÓg winning side of 1982. After completing ‘A’<br />
Levels in French, Spanish and History he attended Queen’s University,<br />
Belfast where he obtained a degree in Law. He completed his MSc in<br />
Criminology in Edinburgh in 1991 and a PhD at Queen’s in Law in 2000.<br />
Kiernan is Director of the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice<br />
and Professor of Law and Transition Justice at the Faculty of Law at<br />
Queen’s. We are delighted he accepted our invitation and we are<br />
honoured by his presence tonight.<br />
Mr McGovern congratulates Kevin O’Reilly on his outstanding achievement of obtaining 6 A Grades at A Level.<br />
<strong>The</strong> awards tonight reflect the exceptional academic successes at ‘A’<br />
Level in 2007 and we congratulate all the students on their individual<br />
awards and their collective success. We also congratulate all the<br />
recipients of special awards. <strong>The</strong> graduates concerned have<br />
contributed fully to the life of the school across many different areas<br />
including, Drama, Music, Sport, Science and Technology.<br />
On behalf of the Board of Governor I offer our thanks and<br />
appreciation to everyone associated with tonight’s celebration, past<br />
pupils, parents, staff and graduates.<br />
I wish to thank the parents of all the graduates for their continued<br />
loyalty and support for the <strong>Abbey</strong>.<br />
I also wish to thank and congratulate the entire staff of the school for<br />
all their best efforts, commitment and dedication.<br />
In conclusion I hope that you all enjoy the presentation evening and I<br />
invite you to join us for light refreshments in the school canteen at the<br />

Kieran McEvoy is Director of the Institute of Criminology and Criminal<br />
Justice and Professor of Law and Transitional Justice at the School of<br />
Law, Queens University Belfast. After university he worked as<br />
Information Officer for NIACRO, a large non-governmental<br />
organisation which campaigns on behalf of prisoners, their families<br />
and ex-offenders. He was appointed Assistant Director of the<br />
Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice in 1995 and was<br />
promoted to Professor in 2002 at the age of 35, one of the youngest<br />
professorial appointments in Queen's 150 year history. He has spent<br />
sabbaticals as a visiting professor at Harvard, Berkeley, London School<br />
of Economics, Cambridge, Fordham and New York University.<br />
He has written over fifty scholarly articles and book chapters and is<br />
author or editor of six books including Paramilitary Imprisonment in<br />
Northern Ireland, winner of the 2002 British Society of Criminology<br />
book of the year award. His areas of specialism are conflict, political<br />
imprisonment, human rights and transitional justice. He has<br />
conducted research in a wide range of countries including the United<br />
States, Canada, Colombia, Spain, Italy, Bosnia, South Africa, Sierra<br />
Leone, Uganda, Nigeria and Rwanda.<br />

He is a long term activist and current chairperson of CAJ (the<br />
Committee on the Administration of Justice) - Northern Ireland's<br />
primary human rights non-governmental organisation, and is on the<br />
Executive Committee of NIACRO and Community Restorative Justice<br />
Ireland. He is currently writing two books, one on truth commissions<br />
and another one on amnesties as an element of conflict<br />
transformation.<br />
Kieran attended the <strong>Abbey</strong> from 1978 to 1985 and completed A levels<br />
in French, Spanish and History before moving to QUB where he<br />
obtained his degree in Law. He completed his MSc in Criminology in<br />
Edinburgh in 1991 and a PhD at QUB in Law (part time) in 2000.<br />
Kieran is a native of Newry (Sheepbridge) and includes both gaelic<br />
football and soccer as his hobbies. He played gaelic for Saval and the<br />
<strong>Abbey</strong> and was a member of the successful Corn na nÓg winning<br />
squad of 1982. He remains a keen Liverpool supporter and five a side<br />
player though he admits his talents were and are best exhibited in the<br />
post match analysis rather than on the field! He lives in Belfast and is<br />
married to Lesley and they have a daughter (Órlaith) aged 3. Kieran’s<br />
<strong>Abbey</strong> links are further strengthened since his wife spent three years<br />
on the teaching staff of the <strong>Abbey</strong> (1989 – 1992). In his spare time he<br />
is an enthusiastic couch potato. In particular, he is an aficionado of the<br />
Sopranos and claims to have learnt everything he knows regarding<br />
management, motivation and bathrobe attire from Tony Soprano!<br />

Biology Kevin O’Reilly Dr. M. Abrahamson Award<br />
This award commemorates Mervyn Abrahamson who graduated from the <strong>Abbey</strong> in the early<br />
1900s and who later became an eminent Physician in London.<br />
Further Mathematics Kevin O’Reilly Bro. J. G. Gibbons Award<br />
This award celebrates the memory of Br J G Gibbons who taught mathematics in the <strong>Abbey</strong><br />
during the 70’s. He brought an energy and dedication to his teaching and extended this to the<br />
area of gaelic football in the school.<br />
Chemistry Kevin O’Reilly Pro. L Abrahamson Award<br />
This award commemorates Leonard Abrahamson, a graduate from the <strong>Abbey</strong> in the early 1900s<br />
who later became President of the Royal College of Physicians.<br />
ICT Kevin O’Reilly Bro. D. W. Lynam Award<br />
This award celebrates the work of an outstanding Mathematician who saw the beginning of the<br />
Computer revolution in the <strong>Abbey</strong> school during his term as Headmaster in the 1970s. His long<br />
period of service in Newry saw numerous students benefit greatly from his logical and enquiring<br />
mind.<br />
Spanish Kevin O’Reilly Jack Cushnan Award<br />
This award commemorates the work in the <strong>Abbey</strong> of Jack Cushnan who as Head of the Spanish<br />
Department in the 1960s and 70s saw his subject achieve new status in the school curriculum.<br />
When he left the school he became Headmaster of the British Council Schools in Cali, Columbia<br />
and Madrid, Spain.<br />
History Patrick McNulty Bro. P. W. Newell Award<br />
Brother P.W. Newell was a legend in the <strong>Abbey</strong> where he served as a teacher and as a<br />
Headmaster during the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s. As a Historian, his attention to detail was<br />
remarkable and as Headmaster he was responsible for the planning and building of the present<br />
school which was opened in 1966.<br />
Physics Patrick McNulty Bro. M. K. Farrell Award<br />
Brother M.K. Farrell was a popular and caring teacher in the <strong>Abbey</strong> in the 1960s and 70s. His work<br />
in the Physics Lab was matched by his enthusiasm on the playing fields and he made a lasting<br />
impression in the lives of many <strong>Abbey</strong> students.<br />
Mathematics Patrick Tierney P. A. Sweeney Award<br />
<strong>The</strong> name of Paddy Sweeney was synonymous with the teaching of Mathematics in the <strong>Abbey</strong> in<br />
the 1940s, 50s and 60s. He took such great enjoyment in solving problems and so conveyed this<br />
to his students that many were inspired to follow his footsteps.<br />

Subject Pupils Award<br />
Irish Patrick Tierney P. A. Crinion Award<br />
Paddy Crinion was a distinguished member of the <strong>Abbey</strong> staff for three decades in the 1940s, 50s<br />
and 60s. A recognised expert in Latin he was equally gifted in Irish and during his time in Newry<br />
was involved in all aspects of Irish Culture and Language.<br />
English Literature Conor McKeown Bro. T. L Magee Award<br />
Brother T. L. Magee will always be remembered in the <strong>Abbey</strong> as an excellent Headmaster and as<br />
an inspirational teacher of English. A gentle Kerryman he was as big in heart as in stature.<br />
Drama Conor McKeown Bro. I. M. Liston Award<br />
This award celebrates the distinguished teaching career of Brother I. Liston. For over 53 years in<br />
Newry Brother Liston conveyed to thousands of <strong>Abbey</strong> students an awareness and appreciation<br />
of English Literature, Poetry and dramatic expression.<br />
Art Niall McAleenan Bro. T. F. Beausang Award<br />
Brother Beausang had perhaps the longest period of service in the Newry school where his love<br />
of Language and Art widened the minds of generations of <strong>Abbey</strong> students and his creative<br />
talents acted as a spur to literally thousands of students who have benefited from his teaching.<br />
Business Studies Derrick McCarthy Bro. J. B. Hynes Award<br />
This award commemorates the life of Brother J.B. Hynes. During his teaching career in the <strong>Abbey</strong><br />
in the 1960s and 70s, he was a popular figure whose grasp of business affairs and fundraising<br />
was remarkable. His humorous approach to teaching colleagues and his pupils made him a<br />
popular friend to all who worked with him.<br />
French Craig McParland Brendan Cassidy Award<br />
Brendan Cassidy was a popular and dedicated teacher who served <strong>Abbey</strong> students for almost<br />
twenty years in the 1950s and 60s. As Head of the French Department he displayed a dedication<br />
and thoroughness to the teaching of his subject which was inspirational to his students.<br />
Economics Patrick Cunningham P. J. Kane Award<br />
This award is dedicated to the memory of P.J. Kane a distinguished past teacher. P.J. introduced<br />
Economics to the <strong>Abbey</strong> and during his teaching career he inspired both staff and pupils with his<br />
courage and dedication.<br />

This award is dedicated to the memory of a gentle and caring teacher who after his return from a<br />
period of time in India served the largest part of his teaching career in the <strong>Abbey</strong> where his<br />
many pupils recall him with warmth and devotion.<br />

Gus Toremans was an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher of music in the <strong>Abbey</strong> for almost a<br />
quarter of a century. His wonderful vocabulary and love of his subject brought an appreciation of<br />
all types of music to his students who will always remember him with admiration and joy.<br />
RE Niall Boyle Bro. W. A. Byrne Award<br />
Brother W.A. Byrne is one of those <strong>Abbey</strong> legends, a man of rare vivacity and enthusiasm. During<br />
his prolonged period of service in the school he was a shining example of the religious calling of<br />
Brother Edmund Rice. His attention to the disadvantaged in society and especially to the African<br />
Foreign Missions was unequalled.<br />
Psychology Brendan Turley Bro. W. O. Murphy Award<br />
Bro. W. O. Murphy was a committed and outstanding educator. He was Vice Principal of the <strong>Abbey</strong><br />
during the 70’s and 80’s. He had a long distinguished career in the school and loved teaching Irish.<br />
Sociology Christopher Hughes Bro J. D. McDonald Award<br />
This award celebrates the work carried out by the last <strong>Christian</strong> Brother who served as Headmaster<br />
in the <strong>Abbey</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> School. His period of office is memorable for the quality and extent of<br />
change he initiated. Many new ideas and subjects were introduced into the school during his time<br />
enriching the quality and variation of education offered to the students.<br />
Politics Sean Darling Bro. D. L. O’Donnell Award<br />
This award commemorates the life and work of Brother D.L. O'Donnell who had an abiding interest<br />
and knowledge of political affairs in Ireland. He had an exceptionally long connection with the<br />
<strong>Abbey</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> School where he celebrated his centenary in 1998.<br />
PE Studies Damian Kearney Bro. P. C. McFarland Award<br />
This award is dedicated to the memory of Brother P. McFarland and his enthusiastic approach to the<br />
teaching of English but more appropriately to his love of Gaelic games. He will long be<br />
remembered as a colossus of the <strong>Abbey</strong> playing fields where he displayed a drive for success that<br />
will be long remembered by legions of <strong>Abbey</strong> sportsmen.<br />
Technology & Design Gavin Myers Bro. C. I. Gallagher Award<br />
This award is dedicated to the long service in the <strong>Abbey</strong> of Brother C.I. Gallagher in the 1960’s and<br />
1970’s. During his career both as a teacher and as Headmaster in the school he had a consuming<br />
passion for scientific and technological developments, a passion that he used to modernise the<br />
school for the benefit of his students.<br />

Christina Fitzsimmons Trophy<br />

This award is presented to the pupil who achieved the highest marks across the range of Modern<br />
Languages at ‘A’ Level. <strong>The</strong> trophy was donated by Mr. Tom Kelly. <strong>The</strong> award seeks to recognise<br />
the outstanding contributions in the field of Modern Languages made by Mrs. Fitzsimmons<br />
during her teaching career in the <strong>Abbey</strong> 1968 – 1983 and is a fitting recognition of the high<br />
esteem held by her past pupils of the work done by Mrs Fitzsimmons in and out of her<br />
classroom.<br />
John Grant Memorial Award<br />

This award is presented to the student who has made the biggest contribution to Gaelic Football<br />
during the last school year and commemorates John Grant ‘a gentle giant’ and an outstanding<br />
member of the 1974 MacRory Cup team who died suddenly and tragically following his apparent<br />
recovery from a serious car accident.<br />

sportsman of the year. <strong>The</strong> trophy commemorates T. P. Murphy a founder member of the <strong>Abbey</strong><br />
Sports Association and an outstanding sporting past pupil of the <strong>Abbey</strong>.<br />
