Fedaks’ legacy gift<br />
sets new standard<br />
<strong>The</strong> leadership and staff of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Wash<strong>in</strong>gton</strong><br />
<strong>Institute</strong> express <strong>the</strong>ir deep appreciation to<br />
Marilyn and Michael Fedak <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir generous<br />
bequest of $10 million to cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Institute</strong>’s vital work. <strong>The</strong> Fedaks’ bequest<br />
is <strong>the</strong> largest one-time contribution ever received.<br />
“<strong>The</strong> <strong>Wash<strong>in</strong>gton</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> is an enormously<br />
<strong>in</strong>fluential voice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conversation about<br />
<strong>the</strong> future of <strong>the</strong> Middle East. We believe<br />
that its role will only become greater <strong>in</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g<br />
years as grow<strong>in</strong>g turbulence threatens<br />
<strong>the</strong> region,” said Michael Fedak. “We want<br />
to help ensure that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> has <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
resources to rema<strong>in</strong> at center stage,<br />

D<strong>in</strong>ner will honor Dr. Kiss<strong>in</strong>ger<br />
On October 6, 2008, <strong>The</strong> <strong>Wash<strong>in</strong>gton</strong> <strong>Institute</strong><br />
will host <strong>the</strong> second annual Scholar-Statesman<br />
Award D<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>in</strong> New York City. This year, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong><br />
honors <strong>for</strong>mer secretary of state Dr. Henry Kiss<strong>in</strong>ger <strong>for</strong> his<br />
extensive career <strong>in</strong> public service and <strong>the</strong> contributions he has<br />
made to scholarly literature <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of <strong>for</strong>eign affairs.<br />
<strong>The</strong> date of this year’s d<strong>in</strong>ner is particularly noteworthy as it co<strong>in</strong>cides<br />
with <strong>the</strong> thirty-fifth anniversary of <strong>the</strong> Yom Kippur War.<br />
Dr. Kiss<strong>in</strong>ger’s diplomacy was <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> end of that war and <strong>in</strong> launch<strong>in</strong>g<br />
subsequent Egyptian-Israeli negotiations that gave birth to <strong>the</strong> Arab-Israeli “peace process.”<br />
Over a lifetime of public service, Dr. Kiss<strong>in</strong>ger served as a consultant to several government agencies<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, <strong>the</strong> National Security Council, and <strong>the</strong><br />
Department of State. He served as secretary of state under President Richard Nixon and later Gerald<br />
Ford from 1973 to 1977.<br />
