Fact sheet 2: <strong>Flora</strong> <strong>and</strong> Fauna<br />
The project will provide a link<br />
between Avalon Airport <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Melbourne-Geelong rail line <strong>and</strong><br />
a new station at the airport.<br />
<strong>Flora</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>fauna</strong> <strong>studies</strong><br />
<strong>Flora</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>fauna</strong> <strong>studies</strong> <strong>and</strong> other<br />
investigations will be carried out in<br />
the area between Avalon Airport<br />
<strong>and</strong> the Melbourne-Geelong rail line<br />
<strong>and</strong> between Lara <strong>and</strong> Little River.<br />
These <strong>studies</strong> will help identify any<br />
potential environmental impacts<br />
that must be considered when<br />
developing options for the new<br />
rail link.<br />
By better underst<strong>and</strong>ing the<br />
local flora <strong>and</strong> <strong>fauna</strong>, the project<br />
team can develop options which<br />
will minimise the project’s<br />
environmental impact.<br />
Initial study <strong>and</strong> results<br />
Early assessments have identified<br />
species of introduced <strong>and</strong> native<br />
flora <strong>and</strong> <strong>fauna</strong> in the area. Parts<br />
of the study area may provide a<br />
habitat for some threatened flora<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>fauna</strong> species.<br />
Field surveys during 2011 <strong>and</strong><br />
2012 will provide more detailed<br />
information about the presence<br />
<strong>and</strong> location of flora <strong>and</strong> <strong>fauna</strong>.<br />
Field surveys<br />
Field surveys will be undertaken by<br />
qualified ecologists.<br />
The <strong>fauna</strong> surveys will involve locating<br />
<strong>and</strong> monitoring habitats, including<br />
targeted surveys for threatened species.<br />
The flora surveys will be undertaken<br />
during the optimum growing season<br />
for each species, usually during winter<br />
<strong>and</strong> spring.<br />
When complete, findings of the flora <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>fauna</strong> study will be available at www.<br />
transport.vic.gov.au/avalonlink.<br />
