Annual Report 2010

A good community hospital needs 

a good Foundation 

Tri-City Medical Center opened its doors in 

1961 with 42 physicians on staff. Almost immediately, the need to 

expand was evident. North County’s population was growing and 

Tri-City Medical Center has kept pace ever since, now comprising the 

main Oceanside campus, the Wound Care Center and Wellness Center 

in Carlsbad. Today, the system: 

• Has 397 licensed beds 

• Is home for more than 500 doctors in 60 specialties 

• Admitted 17,000 patients in 2010 

• Treated nearly 92,000 on an outpatient basis 

• Delivered 2,957 babies in 2010

The Tri-City Hospital Foundation 

was founded in 1964, just three years after the hospital doors opened. 

Since its inception, the Foundation has raised nearly $40 million 

and has been instrumental in offering financial help in support of 

services and equipment. Today, the Foundation remains a volunteerled 

nonprofit whose mission is bringing together our community 

to support the vital services at Tri-City Medical Center. The year 

2010 became pivotal for the Foundation when new leadership and 

a proactive Board of Trustees launched a program of renewal for 

Foundation goals and operations.

We have an energetic cadre of men and women committed to enhancing not only the Tri-City Hospital 

Foundation, but also our community hospital itself. After all, that is what the Foundation is all about. This 

team has the kind of spirit that will write the next chapter for the Foundation and build the next story, creating a true sense of 

stewardship, independence and trust that will serve the Foundation and the Medical Center for decades to come. 

We are leveraging past success. But we are banking on future efforts to enhance that success. A hospital foundation should 

be a beacon that illuminates the presence of something really important: a community hospital that truly adds value not 

only through quality of life but through real economic impact. I believe that to be truly successful as a Foundation, we will 

need to extend our reach throughout every neighborhood to engage every civic leader, business owner, donor and potential 

donor, family and patient in supporting a community hospital with a rich history and even richer medical resources. 

In the following pages you will read about several priorities – our building blueprint. You will learn about ambitious, focused 

fundraising efforts that can assure continued quality healthcare close to home. Many of you are already taking that journey 

with us. Thank you! We hope others will join us.

Chairman’s Message 

Nowhere to go but up 

When you’ve got a good foundation and you want to expand, there’s nowhere to go but up. 

One element of creating the next story has to do with people - recruiting more good ones to the 

development team, finding new blood to mingle with those board members who have gotten us to 

where we are now. As you read this we are completing the process of strengthening our talented and 

dedicated Foundation Board of Trustees by adding new members who share our vision of supporting and expanding critical 

hospital services and facilities. 

We are developing plans for more aggressive public outreach so that potential customers from Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista and 

the surrounding areas know about our hidden gem of a community hospital and understand why they should support it. 

We are also completing a feasibility study to thoroughly understand community needs, interviewing more than 200 

community leaders to gain important outside perspective. This study will fuel the engine that drives a high-powered program 

for growth in 2011 and beyond. 

The year 2010 marks only the beginning of our new era. I look forward to the building process with each of you.

Three challenges, three chances for success 

Tri-City Medical Center has identified several critical healthcare needs that face the citizens of Carlsbad, Oceanside, 

Vista and our neighboring communities. In 2010, the Foundation board and staff began addressing the challenge 

of supporting the following Tri-City Medical Center priorities with enhanced funding: 

1 Cancer Institute: 

Currently, Tri-City Medical Center provides oncology care to 

approximately 5,500 patients each year. By combining state-of-theart 

treatment with its mission to care for the whole person, Tri-City 

Medical Center provides exceptional care and compassionate 

support for patients with cancer and their families. This life 

threatening disease has touched every family in our community, 

and our commitment to offer the most comprehensive services has 

guided our decision to fund the capital expenses of a new Cancer 

Institute at Tri-City Medical Center. 

How do you mend 

a beating heart 

2 Orthopedic Institute: 

Currently, Tri-City Medical Center’s orthopedics services helps 

relieve pain and restore movement for thousands of patients. Pain 

can slow down active lifestyles and makes even everyday tasks 

seem like work. Tri-City Medical Center’s comprehensive approach 

to orthopedics helps patients find relief from joint, back and neck 

pain. To become one of the top orthopedic programs in the nation, 

Tri-City Medical Center will build an Orthopedic Institute offering 

the most progressive medical programs, innovative approaches and 

a top medical team of dedicated specialists to provide the highest 

quality care for patients of all ages. 

3 Cardiovascular Health Institute: 

Tri-City Medical Center’s Cardiovascular Health Institute is now open, 

bringing a new standard of heart health and wellness to North San 

Diego County and the entire region. The Institute offers cutting edge 

medicine in a patient-focused model with a new Access Center, 

dedicated Care Coordinator and streamlined, well coordinated 

patient experience. 

At Tri-City Medical Center, an extraordinary cardiac 

surgeon, Dr. David Perkowski, is a national leader in 

fixing a heart without stopping 

it and routing blood flow around 

it. He has performed upwards of 

1,500 such procedures, keeping 

only a small portion of the heart 

still while the rest continues to 

provide normal circulation. It’s a less invasive procedure 

and reduces the risk of stroke, infection, kidney failure 

and even death. 

This medical pioneer exemplifies the capabilities of 

Tri-City Medical Center’s new Cardiovascular Health 

Institute, now an important part of our focus on 

heart health.

Fun raising funds 

Baile: another word for “fundraising success” 

The Foundation’s 30th annual elegant “dance party,” the Baile, raised more than $360,000, 

with proceeds benefiting the Medical Center’s Cancer Institute. Part of the celebration 

honored radiation oncologist Dr. Eva Lean with the first ever Legacy Award, which honors 

those who exemplify humanitarian leadership values. 

Foundation courts support from tennis fans 

The Foundation worked with the Medical Center to take advantage of its “presenting 

sponsor” status for the 2010 Mercury Insurance Open, which marked the return of women’s 

professional tennis to the La Costa Resort & Spa. A charity event to benefit Tri-City Medical 

Center included cocktails, an opportunity to meet former and current players, a charity 

auction and admittance to the tournament’s night session. Proceeds from the event funded 

equipment for stereotactic imaging at the hospital’s Edgar and Jo Anne Jones Women’s 

Diagnostic Center. 

Larry Anderson, CEO of Tri-City Medical Center, with tennis legend Pam Shriver, who served as emcee and 

auctioneer for the evening. The charitable benefit featured a cocktail reception, live and silent auctions, 

celebrity guests and top female tennis players. 

Sun shines on SummerFest 

July 24 brought SummerFest 2010 to Vista, co-sponsored by the Tri-City Hospital Foundation and the Vista Optimist Club. People 

from throughout the area (including a large number of hospital employees) enjoyed samples of food and libation from some 

of the region’s leading purveyors. Tri-City Medical Center’s Food & Nutrition Services was there, as well. The event helped raise 

more than $37,000 for the employee-driven Helping Hands program, with the funds earmarked for implementation of the 

C.A.R.E. Channel at Tri-City Medical Center and a Healing Garden, which is expected to be complete on May 16, 2011. 

Marathon highlights Tri-City Medical Center’s heart-healthy expertise 

Thirteen local runners got extra help as they competed in the Carlsbad Marathon, which 

featured Tri-City Medical Center as presenting sponsor, a title the hospital holds again 

in 2011 and has committed to for three more years. Selected from among 74 applicants, 

the runners received free entry into the sold-out event as well as personal training and 

a two-month membership at the Tri-City Wellness Center. The event highlights a greater 

emphasis on wellness services designed to promote healthy lifestyles. 

Golf ‘Fore’ Your Heart Tournament a hearty success 

More than 150 golfers, including 30 pros, got in the swing of things on 

May 10 for the TaylorMade Golf ‘Fore’ Your Heart Tournament benefitting 

Tri-City Medical Center’s Cardiovascular Health Institute. “Play around 

to help others stay around” was the theme of the 2010 tournament. It 

was the 25th anniversary of Golf ‘Fore’ Your Heart. Proceeds from the 

tournament have helped enhance cardiovascular care at Tri-City Medical 

Center by providing almost $2 million in funds. Proceeds from this year’s 

tournament were over $136,000 and helped provide equipment for the 

new Cardiovascular Health Institute at Tri-City Medical Center.
