Ray Bradbury Said It Best
“Buck Rogers burst upon our vision like some grander July 4th full of rockets celebrating
tomorrow. In a world without television, lasers or rockets, Buck Rogers, a fantasy character in
a fantastical world, sprang to life….. Since its official debut in January 1929, the Buck Rogers
comic strip has brought millions of readers a symbol of hope… of adventure… and of the
future, by projecting technological advancements far into time. Many of those early ‘visions’
have now become reality. The Buck Rogers comic strip took off and became an American
tradition.
Buck Rogers was educational as well as entertaining. It depicted science and education in a
positive manner, while portraying future science as not only possible, but probable. It also
stressed the importance of females in the future. Buck Rogers expanded our imaginations
and nurtured our ability to see beyond our own limitations. Because Buck Rogers’ exploration
of future science was based on actual scientific research taking place at the time, the comic
strip was successful in predicting inventions that are now reality. Some of Buck Rogers’
visions included self-developing ultra-violet prints (Polaroid Pictures), the truth gauge (lie
detector) and the phonovision (picture phone). It also depicted people on the moon.”
Buck Rogers and Science Education
“The nation that out-educates us today will outcompete
us tomorrow”, said President Barack
Obama in April, 2009. The President is placing
special emphasis on STEM education –
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
The administration also increased funding and
established new programs for K-12 STEM
educational initiatives.
For more than 80 years, Buck Rogers has
inspired exploration of science, technology and
outer space and is an ideal tool for teaching
Science, Physics, Astronomy, Technology,
and Mathematics.
We plan to partner with NASA or another
agency / non-profit so that awareness is
raised for STEM initiatives featuring Buck
Rogers with the K-12 demographic.
“Buck Rogers’ world isn’t science
fantasy – a miracle or a pipe dream –
but it does have an assignment.
Buck’s job is to publicize a problem
that scientists are working on – today.
We conjecture its solution. Science
proves us right surprisingly often
because we limit our conjectures to
what is scientifically reasonable”.
– 1950’s Promotional Flier, National Newspaper Syndicate.
Brand Historical Overview
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was the first comic strip devoted to
science fiction, helping introduce us all to the possibilities of the future,
such as space travel and the atomic bomb. This precedent setting
new comic strip offered wild and exciting adventures.
Long before James Bond or Flash Gordon, hi-tech gadgets were the
trademark of Buck Rogers’ 25th Century. Rocket ships, space travel,
robots, and ray guns -- concepts considered by most to be wildly
improbable, if not downright impossible -- are now a reality.
In the age of Star Trek and Star Wars, Buck Rogers continues its
influence in popular culture.
21
The Buck Rogers “Credo” – Guidelines from the Beginning
Buck Rogers realism was to be based on the scientifically possible and probable. Scientific developments depicted
were to give the impression that experiments being carried out in the 20th Century were coming to fruition in the 25th
Century.
Buck Rogers was to portray science and education in a positive manner. There were to be no mad scientists or
absent-minded professors. The strip’s secondary ‘lead’ character – Doctor Huer – was to be a friendly, helpful
scientist/educator… the type of man non-athletic boys could pattern themselves after when reaching adulthood.
Youngsters didn’t need bulging muscles to succeed. What they needed was a bone-deep respect for learning and matters
of the mind.
Buck Rogers was to carry no heavy-handed ‘social message.’ The strip was to be non-political and nondiscriminatory.
Women were to be presented as the respected equals of men; working side by side with the latter. Earth
men and women were to be pictured as eager to cooperate with the Martians, Venusians or the inhabitants of any other
planet.
The importance of the female sex was to be underscored. Women were to play prominent roles in the strip, usually
from a position of authority. (The redoubtable Wilma Deering – a Lieutenant – appeared in the first day’s release, on
January 7, 1929 and shared most of Buck’s adventures on an equal footing.) Other women, such as Ardala Valmar,
Flame D’Amour, Ethana of Venus, Amora of Deos, Futura & Alura all had starring roles.
Buck Rogers was to represent adventure and entertainment. Highlighted themes were the age old conflict between
good and evil, between avaricious self-seekers and peacemakers. Buck’s adversaries were humans or humanoid types,
not giant blobs of algae or three-headed dragons. His adversaries were to present a formidable intellectual, as well as
physical, challenge. There was to be enough soft-pedaled romance to ‘hook’ teenagers and adults, but no prolonged
kisses, because pre-adolescents might be turned off.
The “Credo” was established & adhered to the entire run of the comic strip.
22
Storyline - 500 Years Into The Future
A trained engineer and accomplished military pilot from the 20th
Century, Buck Rogers is thrown into suspended animation and
awakens 500 years later into a world altered by scientific advances
and Earth under the heel of alien invasion.
Buck encounters Wilma Deering and Dr. Huer and joins
Earth’s military defense force. Surprisingly, Buck is not
overwhelmed by all the technological wonders of the 25th
Century and quickly adapts. He soon proves himself to be
an effective warrior and leader, becoming highly respected
among his new peers. He has the acting rank of Captain
(his rank in the 20th Century).
Buck has a commanding charisma. He is a secret operative, an
intelligence officer, fighter pilot, inventor and head of the esteemed
‘Rocket Rangers’. Buck is not super-human. He’s an extremely
intelligent and brave man who combats forces of interplanetary evil
on a regular basis by utilizing his brain as much as his athletic ability
– relying more on his own skill-set than on 25th Century gadgetry.
Buck Rogers represents the “good guy” in all of us.
Motion Picture & Television Series
"The year is 1987 and NASA launches the last of America's
deep space probes. In a freak mishap Ranger 3 and its pilot
Captain William 'Buck' Rogers are blown out of their trajectory
into an orbit which freezes his life support systems and
returns Buck Rogers to Earth 500 years later."
Starring Gil Gerard as Buck Rogers & Erin Gray as
Col. Wilma Deering. The strip's primary villain,
"Killer" Kane, was played at first by Henry Silva and
later in the series by Michael Ansara, with Pamela
Hensley as the seductively sinister Princess Ardala.
The series' loyal cult following inspired two episodes
of Comedy Central's South Park in 2006 and
maintains a strong presence with countless fan made
videos on You Tube.
In 1988, TSR, Inc. established a XXVc Universe
of Buck Rogers products, including comic books,
novels, game setting, video & arcade games
following it’s popular Dungeon’s & Dragons
(D&D) model.
The XXVc is a time of planetary conquest and
the World of the XXVc reflects the concept of
feasible futuristic technology with its assumption
that mankind will one day fight over the
resources of its own Solar System.
The XXVc products remain popular today and
continue to be played throughout world. The
comic books & game modules can be
adapted into casual games.
Rocket Rangers
The fan base was always included as part of the Buck
Rogers universe, as members of an elite squadron known
as ‘The Rocket Rangers’. Members of this secret club
swear an oath:
“I solemnly swear to uphold the ideal of freedom for individuals,
to advance cooperation between nations, to defend the rights of all
peoples and promote the course of peace throughout the Universe”.
The Rocket Rangers were prominently featured in the
Sunday Comic Strips. Whereas the dailies contained the
adventures of Buck Rogers, the Sundays were focused on
the ongoing adventures of young Buddy & Alura as
members of the Rocket Rangers.
This iteration for kids was most compelling as each
received personalized/individually numbered membership
cards, received confidential bulletins/newsletters, rings
and badges – often as free sponsor premiums.
“Every courtesy is to be extended
upon whatever places he/she shall
happen to land. All interplanetary
Police, Rocket Patrols and Military
Space Forces are instructed to
render every aid and assistance
possible to this Rocket Ranger upon
demand in furtherance of his/her
Official Duties.”
Advertising & Promotional Partners of the Past
The Buck Rogers radio show & comic strips had
numerous sponsors including Kelloggs, Post,
Cocomalt, Cream of Wheat and Popsicle, Tootsie
& Sylvania to name a few.
Each sponsor offered highly collectible ‘sponsor
premiums’, toys/gifts, which were either free or at
nominal cost. To this day, they are still sought after
and worth thousands of dollars.
New advertising sponsorships and packaged
goods -- including private label and promotions -
- are supported by Buck Rogers’ on-going & new
entertainment projects.
Buck Rogers is an ambassador for the science
fiction genre, presenting many of its premises,
plots, and props to a mass audience – for the first
time.
Future astronauts, scientists, engineers, writers,
architects, designers and countless others have
acknowledged that the adventures of Buck Rogers
in the 25th Century were the inspiration from which
their own careers arose.
Few works of fiction influence culture at every level.
The mere mention of the name “Buck Rogers” is
synonymous with futuristic furniture, medicine,
architecture, transportation, gadgetry, fashion,
science, war and space travel.
Much of the “science fiction” first envisioned
in Buck Rogers, is now “science fact”.
