UNITED WAY COMMUNITY REPORT 2011
Message from the President & CEO
Pam Went and I are pleased to have this opportunity to
thank the community for all its support, and to reflect
on the accomplishments of the United Way in 2011. This
is National Volunteer Week, and we would like to start
by thanking you, the many volunteers of the United
Way: our Board members, our Campaign team, our
Committee volunteers, and the hundreds of others who
lent a hand throughout the year. You and our generous
donors have enabled the United Way to continue to be a
vital and relevant organization providing resources and
funding throughout the County.
As leaders of the United Way, we are both proud of the
work that this organization does. Our Annual Report

provides a detailed and thorough overview of the past
year highlighting our funded agencies, our grants, the
programs and services we are involved in, and our
annual campaign. Our Board and staff are committed to
being accountable and transparent to the community.
Enclosed you will find a pie chart that provides a
detailed breakdown of how donor dollars and grants are
invested. Our year-end financial statements are posted
on our new website www.northumberlandunitedway.
ca and can also be requested from our office. Next
to the government, United Way continues to be the
largest private funder of health and social services in
the county.
This past year, United Ways across Canada launched a
new branding including a new tagline: Change starts
here. As the saying goes, the only constant in life is
change; and as an organization, we must be responsive
to the changing needs in our community. To enable us
to do so this last year, the Board of Directors focused on
the development of a new Strategic Plan. We reviewed
our mission, vision, and values and revised them to
reflect who we are today and clearly state our direction
for the future. This plan will guide us over the next
three years, starting with a review our internal capacity
and gathering the support of the community and our
stakeholders for the direction we believe we must
pursue. Most importantly, it frames the work that we
must do to become a “community impact” organization,
where the funds that we distribute are focused on
community priorities and have a positive impact.
We are thrilled to be recipients of a province-wide
Ontario Trillium Foundation grant and be the lead on this
initiative. It will move the “community impact” process
forward for, not only ourselves, but also the United Ways
in Leeds Grenville, Oxford County, and Sault Ste. Marie.
You will hear more on this initiative in the future.
Within Northumberland, there is a tremendous network
of organizations that partner together to meet the needs
of the residents of this vast county. We are pleased that
the United Way, along with our funded agencies, is an
active participant in this collaborative network which
addresses important issues such as children services,
poverty reduction, transportation, and more.
Our funding and charitable partners in this work
include: Northumberland County, (Food 4 All & Back
Packs for Kids), The Ontario Trillium Foundation, the
Government of Canada (Greenwood Coalition) and the
Province of Ontario (211). We gratefully acknowledge
their support.
In closing, we thank you and our donors for your trust and
support of the United Way. Together we build communities
and create opportunities for better lives for the residents
of Northumberland County. Change starts here!
