UNITED WAY COMMUNITY REPORT 2011
United Way Back Pack for Kids provides nearly 1,700 Back Packs
for Elementary and High School Students across Northumberland!
• Supplies over 1,600 students with new back packs and school supplies annually
• The essential supplies are supported by a large group of community partners including,
Staples Business Depot, Ganaraska Financial Services, Cameco Corporation, Northumberland
County, Rotary Club of Cobourg, Rotary Club of Colborne and Rotary Club of Northumberland
Sunrise, Cobourg Police Services, Carpenter’s Union Local 397, Order of the Eastern Star,
Cobourg Lions Club, Food 4 All Northumberland, Northumberland Children’s Aid Society,
Esco Corp., Sabic Innovative Plastics, Municipality of Port Hope, United Way of Quinte and Bin-It.
The Help Centre: “Faced with our family being
in financial crisis due to reduced employment,
I was unsure where to turn for help. Our bills
were piling up and we needed oil to heat our
home and ensure that our home insurance was
not compromised. A friend suggested the Help
Centre where I was warmly welcomed and not
judged for my predicament. They helped me
with a budget and arranged for payment for the
oil. They also suggested that I consider getting
a Christmas hamper for the holiday season to
allow me to focus my limited income on expenses
and arrears. The Help Centre made things much
easier for our family.”

• Their generous support has enabled the United Way to provide back packs full of supplies for
distribution to both elementary and high school students throughout Northumberland County.
Volunteer Fair – October 22, 2011
Bary Witteveen, Info Northumberland beside, his booth at the Volunteer Fair on Saturday, October 22
at the Cobourg Community Centre. There were 47 agencies at the fair showcasing their information
and emphasizing the need for volunteers. In Northumberland, there are currently 95 organizations
looking for volunteers with 191 volunteer opportunities, for a total of 2,437 volunteers needed to fill
these positions.
The Volunteer Fair offered local agencies the platform to showcase opportunities for volunteerism
in the Northumberland area. Booths were set up to educate people on volunteerism and the
wide variety of opportunities available in the community. Northumberland United Way and Info
Northumberland provided support to this initiative.
St. John Ambulance : In 2011, the St. John
Ambulance Therapy Dogs were requested by
a Northumberland County public school to
conduct regular visits to a special education class.
Among the students was a young boy who was
experiencing emotional difficulties. Most recently,
he had been petting a neighbour’s dog, but
became upset and hit the animal when he was told
that it was time for him to go home. After many
visits by the Therapy Dog team over the months,
this child showed a marked improvement in his
emotional behaviour. While he did experience a
number of outbursts, the boy began to recognize
his emotional state and deal with his emotions
effectively in order to participate in the dog’s visits.
The teacher reported that the therapy dog became
the motivation the little boy needed to make a
significant advance in his social development.
