Canine Herpes Virus
What is Canine Herpes Virus
Canine herpes virus (CHV-1) affects only dogs. In mature dogs and puppies over 3-4 weeks of age, this virus causes a mild respiratory
disease that dogs overcome rapidly. But like all the herpes viruses of man and animals, all recovered dogs carry a few of the virus for life
in a sleeping or latent form. But if your dog is one of the many that carries this virus, it could become a serious problem again in your
dog's puppies.
Canine herpes virus is very common. It is found all over the World. Approximately one out of two or one out of three dogs have been
exposed and carry this virus in their bodies. The greater the number of dogs that are kept together or that live in close proximity, the more
likely the virus is to be present. The more stressed breeding bitches are, the more likely herpes-related puppy loss and small or lost litters
will occur. In some kennels, 100% of the dogs show evidence that they harbor CHV-1.
Although it is theoretically possible to establish groups of herpes-free dogs, show and large breeding kennels can not avoid this virus.
However, good kennel practices, breeding programs, sanitation and proper nutrition will help you minimize or eliminate potential CHV-1
problems.
How Is Canine Herpes Virus Spread To My Dog
Most dogs become infected with canine herpes virus by inhaling or sniffing virus- containing sneezes and any liquid or moist secretions
from an infected, virus-shedding dog. This can be another dog that was recently infected at a dog show or kennel or a carrier dog that
relapsed due to a stressful situation. Most of the dogs that are passing on this virus appear completely normal.
A stud can transmit canine herpes virus to your bitch or vice versa. When a stud is shedding, the virus is present in his semen. When a
bitch is shedding, the virus is present in her vaginal secretions. But this is not the primary way the disease moves around.
Canine herpes virus does not last long in the environment. So just passing your dog through an area that has CHV-1 positive dogs is not
a problem. Sunlight, common disinfectants and bleach kill the virus rapidly.
How Will Canine Herpes Virus Affect My Puppies
If you are a breeder, the most likely thing you will see subsequent to a CHV-1 problem is a drop in fertility in your breeding bitches. If you
are the owner of a single female, the most likely thing to happen is a tie with no puppies at whelping time.
But if your bitch experiences a rise in virus numbers near the end of her pregnancy without a sufficient rise in her antibody level, you will
loose all or some of the puppies during their first three weeks of life. This can be your bitches first experience with the CHV-1 virus, or a
relapse due to the stress of pregnancy and other factors - usually the latter.
Most of these lost puppies are infected by their mothers during birthing or shortly thereafter. But some develop the infection while still in
the womb. When infection occurs while the puppies are still in her uterus, they may be stillborn, re-absorbed or aborted before they reach
term.
When a puppy under 3-4 weeks of age becomes infected with this virus, the disease takes an entirely different course than it does in an
older dog. We believe this is because puppies up to 3-4 weeks old do not regulate their body temperature well and because the immune
systems of these puppies are not sufficiently developed yet. Puppies born from mothers that have a decent antibody level against herpes
are protected through this critical period. But herpes viruses are notorious for not stimulate good immunity. If the mother dog has
adequate immunity herself, she will pass it along in her first milk (colostrum) in the form of anti-herpes antibody and immune cells that
protect her puppies.
Infected, susceptible puppies usually die within their first 3 weeks. But their mothers continue to look fine. If some puppies survive, they
are often poor doers that suffer from multiple health problems including heart and nerve damage.
What Are The Signs That My Breeding Dog(s) Might Have Herpes Virus
Lack of breeding success and star-crossed puppies are the most common signs of a canine herpes virus problem. Late term abortions or
re-absorption of the puppies is also common. The most common hint of the presence of CHV-1 in your adult animals are transient, mild,
upper respiratory problems. Less commonly, ulcers similar to cold sores and inflammation occur on the animal's vagina, or on the
prepuce and base of the penis. Problem periods often follow an increase in dog numbers or changes in your husbandry practices.
But the majority of dogs dealing with canine herpes virus show absolutely no signs that they are sick.
Only isolation of individual dogs and carefully-considered matings will shield your animals from CHV-1. As with their wide-spread cousin,
the human cold sore virus, the presence of CHV-1 in your kennel is very likely. But it is certainly not a tragedy for your kennel or hopes of
successful breeding program either.
What Are The Signs Of Canine Herpes Virus In My Puppies
Your puppy could have been infected any time from late pregnancy through the first three weeks after birth. Whenever it occurred, it takes 3-7
days from the time the virus first entered the puppy for it to begin its destruction.
If the puppies were born alive, the first sign of infection is often a lack of interest in nursing. But there is no one, specific, sign that alerts us to
herpes. The puppies just aren't doing well. They may whine continuously and appear uncomfortable. They may appear to be in pain due to tender
tummies. They often have fast, shallow breathing. They may vomit. They may pass yellowish green stools. Nose and eye discharges are
common. Less common signs are an increased tendency to bleed and seizures. Infected puppies sometimes have pin-point hemorrhages on
their gums.
Young puppies, are not capable of running a fever. Their body mass is just not high enough in proportion to their skin area. This is the weakness
of puppies in dealing with herpes. The virus reproduces much more rapidly at the puppy's lower body temperature than in dogs that can mount a
fever.
As the disease progresses, the puppy's temperature drops to subnormal (Below 98F, 36.7C). Subnormal temperature in puppies is a grave sign.
The disease progresses very rapidly and the puppies usually die in 1-3 days. Because the signs are few and the disease rapid, owners may not
recognize that their puppy is ill until it is gone. If the puppies are lost during their first week, they were probably infected while still in the womb.
By the time the puppy is three weeks old, its defenses and temperature regulation are better and it will usually not die from CHV-1.
Exact outcomes vary - not every puppy in a litter with this problem may die nor will they all necessarily have the virus.
How Is Canine Herpes Virus Diagnosed
Adult Dogs:
The blood tests we currently have are not very helpful identifying dogs that carry the canine herpes virus or in managing the ones that do. They
are also not helpful in identifying which mothers will have problem litters. If a dog has a titer to CHV-1 , we know the bitch or stud is infected. But
we don't know if the dog is, or will be, shedding virus during or after pregnancy. If the antibody test is negative, we are not certain the dog still
does not have the virus lurking somewhere it it's body. This is because the virus doesn't stimulate long-lasting antibodies.
To tell if your dog is shedding the virus, blood samples need to be collected two weeks apart. If the antibody level in the second sample is 3-4
times as high as in the first sample, the dog is likely in a virus-shedding period and should not be bred. However, a steady, low antibody level or
no antibody at all is no guarantee that a female that carries CHV-1 will not begin to shed virus during or after her pregnancy.
An alternative method is to have mouth and vaginal swabs tested for living herpes virus or virus-related protein (FA test or PCR test).
Puppies:
When canine herpes virus is suspected in the death of puppies, the puppy's remains need to be refrigerated immediately , packed in ice, and
sent to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. The remains should not be frozen. This submission must be done through your veterinarian. If you live
outside of the United States or too far to send refrigerated samples, tissues can be collected from the puppy with the instructions of a trained
technician , preserved in formol and shipped by ordinary mail.
The pathologist who examines this tissue will look for certain things that are characteristic of herpes virus infection. The most important is
evidence of extensive bleeding (hemorrhage) in the liver, lungs and kidneys. This occurs because the herpes virus destroys the puppy's bloodclotting
platelets. Damage and bleeding into the spleen, lymph nodes and adrenal glands are also characteristic of puppy death due to herpes
virus as are fluid leakage into the chest and abdominal cavities.
If recently aborted fetuses are submitted, they should be handled like puppies and , if necessary, tested with the same techniques used on swabs
obtained from adults.
Is There Any Effective Treatment
Adults and Juvenile Dogs Over 3-4 Weeks Of Age:
Rest and TLC are all adult dogs need to get over the active stage of herpes infection or relapses.
Puppies Under 3 Weeks Of Age:
Treatment of sick puppies that have this disease is not successful. Since your veterinarian is not certain yet that this is a case of herpes virus,
he/she will probably try all sorts of life-supporting measures including warmth, tube feeding, oxygen and intravenous or subcutaneous fluids.
Pups tend to perk up a bit with this care - but they fade back down shortly thereafter.
Although elevated temperature kills this herpes virus, treating the puppy with elevated temperature has not proved effective in saving the pups.
There are reported cases where puppies were saved by giving them blood serum from adult dogs that recently recovered from herpes virus.
Blood serum from these adult dogs often contains enough antibodies to neutralize the herpes. If you have a herpes virus problem in your kennel
and want to protect certain puppies during their first three weeks of life, 1-2ml of serum may do so. This serum can be frozen at -4F (-20C) in 1-
2ml amounts. At this temperature, it lasts indefinitely. Antibodies will be highest in mature dogs that have just recovered from an active relapse or
initial infection. It would be excellent if this serum was tested and found to be PCR-herpes negative with an anti-herpes antibody titer of as high
as 1:1024 - but 1:64 or 1:32 would probably do.
There is another report that the antiviral drug, vidarabine, has saved some puppies. I do not suggest you treat sick puppies. When puppies
survive herpes virus infection they are usually left with nervous system and heart damage and it is kinder to just let them pass on.
Are There Other Diseases That Could Be Mistaken For Canine Herpes Virus
There are a few common infectious diseases that can be mistaken for herpes deaths in puppies. Canine brucellosis and overwhelming bacterial
infections (septicemia) are two that need to be ruled out.
Accidents and inexperienced or distracted moms are also a common cause of puppy death. Also, some puppies have birth defects that lead to
sudden early death.
More rarely, the protozoan parasites, Neospora and Toxoplasma cause sudden puppy death. Fatal puppy infections with the canine adenovirus,
corona virus and the MVC virus have also been encountered but this is rare.
How Did My Dog Catch Canine Herpes Virus
Most likely, your dog was exposed to the herpes virus at a kennel, groomer, dog show or animal shelter - any place where large numbers of dogs
gather at one time. It did not catch the virus from just passing through these areas - it sniffed or inhaled secretions from another infected dog.
Although it is possible that your dog contracted the virus while being bred, or artificially inseminated, that is not the way most cases occur.
Is There Any Cure For Canine Herpes Virus In Adult Dogs
Once a dog catches canine herpes virus, they are never completely free of it again. Most dogs that become infected, go through a mild initial
upper respiratory tract illness that lasts a week or two and then are never visibly sick again. But the CHV-1 virus is very well adapted to dogs.
Instead of being completely destroyed by your dog's immune system, some of the virus enter cells within the pet's nerve centers (trigeminal &
lumbosacral ganglia, etc.) and live there in a state of suspended animation forever. In this state, they do no harm. In this state, the dog can not
spread the disease. In this state, all laboratory tests for the presence of the virus or antibody against it may be negative. But the virus is still there.
And, in a few dogs, it will reappear in its infective state when the dog's immune system is stressed.
If you would like to understand this phenomenon better, read about how herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 & 2) affect humans. The human and the
dog herpes viruses are very similar in how they behave once they have gained access to the body. However, many more resources have been
invested in understanding the human herpes virus than the dog herpes virus.
What About Vaccination
The Merial Pharmaceutical Company has developed a vaccine that boosts immunity to canine herpes virus for about 60 days and makes it less
likely that a bitch will be shedding virus during pregnancy, delivery and nursing. It also makes it more likely that the bitch will pass on her herpesimmunity
to her puppies through her first milk (colostrum). This vaccine is called Eurican Herpes 205. It appears to be quite effective. However,
although it is available in Europe and pehaps elsewhere, is not yet marketed in the United States.
The first injection is given when the bitch is bred. The second is given 6-7 weeks later. The process must be repeated every time the dog is bred
since the immunity it gives is temporary. It is a good insurance in first-time breeders and repeat problem breeders.
Breeders have asked me when this vaccine will be available in the US. I have not been successful in obtaining this information from Merial. The
policy of this Georgia-based company is to release as little information as possible as to their marketing plans. The only person I know of that
could answer this question is Dr. Herve Poulet, the veterinarian who developed it.
How Can I Sanitize Against The Virus
Herpes is not a tough virus like parvo. Canine herpes virus is quickly killed by most common household disinfectants. Temperature over 104 F
kills the virus as does exposure to bright sunlight.
At dog shows and other community areas with many dogs, keep paper towels and a spray bottle of dilute antiseptic close at hand. Disinfect your
hands before touching other dogs or allowing your dog to be handled by others. Good disinfectants for herpes, listed in order of effectiveness are
70% isopropyl alcohol mixed 50-50 with water, 0.5% Lysol, Listerine mixed 50-50 with water and household bleach diluted 7 tablespoons-full in 1
quart of water (2000ppm).
Keep your dog on a short lead. Keep its head up and do not let it sniff the floor and objects. Spray and wipe off it paws with alcohol.
Do not share items, food or water between dogs. Spray and wipe down kennels before between animals. Keep your dogs as isolated from other
dogs as possible.
How Can I Prevent Another Litter of Sick Puppies
The most common scenario is that bitches that loose a litter to canine herpes virus go on to deliver normal litters. This is because these females
eventually clear their bloodstream of virus leaving only the non-infective, dormant virus in portions of their nervous system. When this does not
happen, the bitch's general health needs to be examined for things that are interfering with her immune system. This could be chronic, stressful
environment, poor nutrition, crowding, poor sanitation, or a chronic disease of some other type. Shipping and boarding can also be enough to
relapse these dogs.
The thyroid hormone level (T-4) needs to be determined in older (5yrs+) breeders. There is mixed info on whether corticosteroid drugs play a part
in relapse.
Isolation and quarantine of bitches from three weeks before they are bred until three weeks after they are bred can be helpful. Given their own private
setting, individual care, and TLC, they are less likely to start shedding the virus again. If they are still free of the virus at breeding age, they will more
likely stay that way when they are isolated.
When the puppies arrive, maintain them in clean, warm, well-ventilated areas away from the other dogs. Maintain a routine de worming and external
parasite program.
Do not over-breed your bitches.
Should I Breed My Female Dog Again
Yes,
If there were good reasons for you to breed your dog before you learned that it harbored the CHV-1 virus, there is no reason not to breed her again.
Wait a year, build your dog's health up and breed her again to a different stud.
If the second litter is still a problem litter, retire the breeder.
What is Eurican Herpes 205
Eurican Herpes 205 is a powder and solvent that is made into an emulsion for injection. Eurican Herpes 205 contains the active substance canine
herpes virus (F205 strain) antigens in a dose of 0.3 to 1.75 μg.
What is Eurican Herpes 205 used for
Eurican Herpes 205 is used to immunise pregnant bitches to prevent mortality, clinical signs and lesions in puppies caused by canine herpes virus
infections acquired in the first few days of life.
Eurican Herpes 205 is given as two 1 ml subcutaneous (under the skin) doses. The first injection is given either when the bitch is on heat or 7 –10
days after the date of mating. The second injection is given 1 to 2 weeks before the expected date of whelping. The bitch should be revaccinated in
the same way during each pregnancy.
How does Eurican Herpes 205 work
Eurican Herpes 205 contains small amounts of canine herpes virus antigens. When injected, this small exposure helps the dog’s immune system to
synthesize antibodies against the canine herpes virus and to neutralize it. Once vaccinated, bitches will, through colostrum, give those antibodies to
puppies. When exposed to canine herpes virus later in life, the puppies will either not become infected or have a much less serious infection. Eurican
Herpes 205 is intended to protect the puppies from this infection during the first few days of life.
How has the effectiveness of Eurican Herpes 205 been studied
Eurican Herpes 205 has been studied in three laboratory studies and two field trials. In one field trial the serological response (antibody production)
was measured. In the other, a study was made of the effect of vaccination on the ability of bitches to breed in an infected kennel. The first laboratory
study tested the dose needed to provide protection. The second study was carried out to show the protection of puppies from vaccinated bitches from
canine herpe svirus. Here Eurican Herpes 205 was compared with no vaccination (controls). The last one has demonstrating that induction of
antibodies is equivalent when bitches are vaccinated the day of heat or 7-10 days after mating.
in relapse.
What benefit has Eurican Herpes 205 shown during the studies
Eurican Herpes 205 showed good protection from canine herpes virus. In the study to show the protection of puppies (from vaccinated bitches) from
canine herpes virus, over 80% of the pups from the vaccinated bitches survived.
What are the side effects of Eurican Herpes 205
The injection of Eurican Herpes 205 may cause temporary oedema (fluid under the skin) at the injection site in up to 10% of animals. This side effect
usually disappears within one week. Rarely, hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions may occur, which require treatment.
What are the precautions for the person who gives the medicine or comes
into contact with the animal
Eurican Herpes 205 contains mineral oil. Accidental injection may cause severe pain and swelling, particularly if injected into a joint or finger – rarely
causing the loss of a finger. If someone is accidentally injected with this product, they must seek immediate medical advice even if only a very small
amount is injected. The Package Leaflet should be taken to the doctor. If pain persists for more than 12 hours after medical examination, the doctor
should be contacted again.
Why has Eurican Herpes 205 been approved
The Committee for Medicinal Products for Veterinary Use (CVMP) agreed that the benefits of Eurican Herpes 205 are greater than any risks to
immunise healthy bitches against canine herpes virus. They recommended that Eurican Herpes 205 should be given a marketing authorisation. The
benefitrisk balance may be found in module 6 of this EPAR.
y Joanna Kimball
This is one of the most pervasive sentiments that puppy buyers, especially families, express when they're looking for a dog.
What they really mean, of course, is that they don't want a show BREEDER – don't want to pay the high price they think show
breeders charge, don't want to go through the often-invasive interview process, and think that they're getting a better deal or a
real bargain because they can get a Lab for $300 or a Shepherd for $150.
I want you to change your mind. I want you to not only realize the benefits of buying a show-bred dog, I want you to INSIST on
a show-bred dog. And I want you to realize that the cheap dog is really the one that's the rip-off. And then I want you to go be
obnoxious and, when your workmate says she's getting a puppy because her neighbor, who raises them, will give her one for
free, or when your brother-in-law announces that they're buying a goldendoodle for the kids, I want you to launch yourself into
their solar plexus and steal their wallets and their car keys.
Here's why:
If I ask you why you want a Maltese, or a Lab, or a Leonberger, or a Cardigan, I would bet you're not going to talk about how
much you like their color. You're going to tell me things about personality, ability (to perform a specific task), relationships with
other animals or humans, size, coat, temperament, and so on. You'll describe playing ball, or how affectionate you've heard
that they are, or how well they get along with kids.
The things you will be looking for aren't the things that describe just "dog"; they'll be the things that make this particular breed
unique and unlike other breeds.
That's where people have made the right initial decision – they've taken the time and made the effort to understand that there
are differences between breeds and that they should get one that at least comes close to matching their picture of what they
want a dog to be.
Their next step, tragically, is that they go out and find a dog of that breed for as little money and with as much ease as
possible.
You need to realize that when you do this, you're going to the used car dealership, WATCHING them pry the "Audi" plate off a
new car, observing them as they use Bondo to stick it on a '98 Corolla, and then writing them a check and feeling smug that
you got an Audi for so little.
It is no bargain.
Those things that distinguish the breed you want from the generic world of "dog" are only there because somebody worked
really hard to get them there. And as soon as that work ceases, the dog, no matter how purebred, begins to revert to the
generic. That doesn't mean you won't get a good dog – the magic and the blessing of dogs is that they are so hard to mess up,
in their good souls and minds, that even the most hideously bred one can still be a great dog – but it will not be a good
Shepherd, or good Puli, or a good Cardigan. You will not get the specialized abilities, tendencies, or talents of the breed.
If you don't NEED those special abilities or the predictability of a particular breed, you should not be buying a dog at all. You
should go rescue one. That way you're saving a life and not putting money in pockets where it does not belong.
If you want a purebred and you know that a rescue is not going to fit the bill, the absolute WORST thing you can do is assume
that a name equals anything. They really are nothing more than name plates on cars. What matters is whether the engineering
and design and service department back up the name plate, so you have some expectation that you're walking away with
more than a label.
Keeping a group of dogs looking and acting like their breed is hard, HARD work. If you do not get the impression that the
breeder you're considering is working that hard, is that dedicated to the breed, is struggling to produce dogs that are more than
a breed name, you are getting no bargain; you are only getting ripped off.
GSD ATOPIC DERMATITIS GENE IS NO PANACEA
By Susan Chaney
Last week’s headline, “Researchers identify gene associated with eczema in dogs,” on the
AlphaGalileo Foundation website, got me excited. Having researched atopic dermatitis for an
article last September, I immediately imagined what this could mean for dog owners
everywhere.
However, as is often the case with headlines, the story revealed a less promising tale – not an
un-promising tale, just less promising.
Although isolation of some genes related to atopic dermatitis in German Shepherd Dogs is
helpful, it’s not a solution..
It is true that researchers at Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural
Sciences, both in Uppsala, Sweden, have isolated a region of eight genes on chromosome 37
of the canine genome associated with the tough-to-combat skin condition. However, it is only in
German Shepherd Dogs.
The genes partially responsible for a proclivity toward atopic dermatitis have been identified in
other breeds as well, according to Patrick Hensel, Dr.med.vet., a diplomat of the American
College of Veterinary Dermatology and an associate professor of dermatology at the University
of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in the city of Athens.
You’d think that dog owners would be getting fewer diagnoses of atopic dermatitis after these
discoveries.
But again, it’s not quite that simple.
Atopic dermatitis involves several body processes, Hensel explains, thus genetic material
responsible for inflammation, cell death, skin barrier formation and others contribute to whether
a particular dog will or won’t develop it. Most genetic studies have found “several genes”
affecting a single process, he says.
In addition, the environment in which a dog lives “plays a major role too,” he says, “since you
can have two dogs with the same genetic predisposition, but one will develop AD and the other
not. This is one reason why it is not that easy to get rid of AD in a breed through breeding
programs.”
The genetic area “detected in the German Shepherd is one which is affecting the skin barrier,”
Hensel says. That skin barrier has become “an important target” for allergy research, he adds.
While it might be discouraging to hear that these genetic discoveries, followed by the
development of tests for the particular genes in a particular breed, can’t, on their own, prevent
atopic dermatitis, the news is not all bad. “The good thing about these genetic tests is that once
we know which gene and process are involved, we may be better able to improve our allergy
management.”
To isolate this genetic area, the researchers looked at GSDs with lowered Immunoglobulin A,
known as “IgA,” an antibody that plays an important role in immunity. “Serum IgA levels are
known to be lower in GSDs compared to other breeds. We detected significantly lower IgA
levels in the [canine atopic dermatitis] cases compared to controls,” the researchers write in the
abstract of their study results which were published on May 9 by the online journal PLOS
Genetics.
The team concluded: “The PKP2 [plakophilin 2] gene found within the associated region” has
become “an interesting target for further study of its importance both in canine and human AD.”

Dogs that accurately sniff out superbug infections
The role of animals in hospital infections
(NaturalNews) In this high-tech world, sometimes it's better to rely on a low-tech solution or, in this case, no tech.
A new study to be published in the Christmas issue of the British Medical Journal found that dogs can be used to sniff out Clostridium
difficile, or C-diff, the element that is responsible for a rising number of hospital infections that are extremely resistant to antibiotics.
The olfactory sense of dogs can be used to identify C-diff infections in stool samples as well as the air surrounding patients in the
hospital environment, all with a high degree of accuracy, researchers said.
The journal said current findings support earlier conclusions that dogs are capable of detecting various types of cancer as well, and
may have potential for screening hospital wards to help prevent C-diff outbreaks.
The infectious C-diff occurs most commonly in older patients who have recently finished a course of antibiotics in the hospital. But the
infections can also begin in the community, especially in nursing homes and other skilled facilities. Symptoms of the infection can
range from mild diarrhea to a life-threatening bowel inflammation.
Some questions remain, but early results are promising
Early detection of the infection is important if doctors hope to contain its spread, but diagnostic tests confirming it are slow (and
expensive), which can delay treatment for as much as a week.
Researchers said that diarrhea as a result of a C-diff infection has a certain smell, and that dogs - with their superior olfactory
capabilities - likely could detect it much better, in comparison with humans. That supposition prompted scientists in the Netherlands to
see if dogs could be trained to sniff out C-diff.
Scientists used a two-year-old male Beagle (named Cliff) that had been trained by a professional instructor to spot C-diff in stool
samples and in patients who had contracted the infection. Cliff was taught to either lay down or sit when he detected the specific
scent.
Following two months of training, Cliff's detection capability was formally tested on 50 C-diff positive and 50 C-diff negative stool
samples, said scientists. He managed to correctly identify all 50 positive samples and 47 of the 50 negative samples.
The results equate to 100 percent sensitivity and 94 percent specificity (sensitivity measures the proportion of positives correctly
identified, while specificity measures the proportion of negatives correctly identified).
Cliff was then taken to two hospital wards to conduct further detection tests in a live environment. The dog managed to correctly
identify 25 of 30 cases (83 percent sensitivity) and 265 of 270 negative controls (98 percent specificity). Researchers added that the
dog was efficient and quick, managing to screen a complete hospital ward for the presence of patients infected with C-diff in fewer
than 10 minutes.
Early detection certainly possible
Scientists admitted there were some limitations to the study, such as the unpredictability of using an animal as a diagnostic tool, as
well as the possibility that the dog itself could spread infections. Other scientists say other unanswered questions remain.
Still, they note that the study demonstrates that training a dog to detect C-diff infection with a high degree of accuracy, both in
samples of stool and in patients who are hospitalized and could contract the infection.
"Early detection could overcome common diagnostic delays (lack of clinical suspicion, delays in sampling stool, and laboratory
procedures) and lead to prompt hygienic measures and treatment," the researchers concluded. "This could have potential for C.
difficile infection screening in healthcare facilities and thus contribute to C. difficile infection outbreak control and prevention."

About Our Weekend Together
From our observation, the average owner or trainer spends most of their time fighting long term
unwanted behaviours. Some of these behaviours can be traced to your dog’s genetic predisposition.
However, for the most part they are learnt behaviours that have been reinforced time after time. In other
words, they are training problems that may have been taught.
It is from these unwanted behaviours, whether it be in a show, competitive training or simply at home,
that many tricks and gimmicks seem to spring into the dog world. These methods in general do not
correct the problems but merely mask them.
In addition these quick-fix solutions only add to the problems in training. Once the undesirable
behaviours have developed, training is never as simple as it could have been and is often very frustrating.
At this point a very promising young dog has become nothing but a horror to work and live with.

When did it all start
Was it as early as the first sit command
Besides the fact that the dog will learn what behaviour to perform when it hears the word “sit” it
simultaneously learns how to learn (classical conditioning – the feeling associated with it). This is where
foundation training begins. What the dog has learnt during its foundation training will have a lasting
effect on its performance, for better or worse. During stress or problem solving the dog will always
attempt to access its foundation training as a point of reference. It is at this point in time where the dog
and trainer learn to speak the same language – or not! This critical stage of training requires firsthand
knowledge of animal learning, patience and specifically taught exercises.
Von Forell K9 Education offers you complete training opportunities for any promising young dog. We will
show you how to reinforce the genetic potential in your dog with the soundest training systems available.
Our seminars and workshops are specifically designed to bring about positive and permanent shifts in
your quality of training.
They are designed to help you view the training of dogs with complete new possibilities. Finally we will
cover the current state of global breeding practices and the impact on behaviour, what the breeder must
know about proper trait selection, developing their puppies and what they should be teaching their
puppy owners, how this impacts the type of dogs we end up in our community.
On a Personal Note
For any families, competitors or Law Enforcement Officers that wish to attend one of my seminars /
workshops, the information below is designed to provide you with some understanding as to the overall
structure and focus of the event.
Firstly I will commence with a general opening statement, the history and current global position of the
working dog world. I will discuss its belief systems, my philosophy on training dogs, my position on
positive and negative training systems, and all the possibilities it creates.
Then we shall discuss how to create and develop a proactive puppy or adult. I will illustrate the
advantages of establishing why this active training component is so important and how to achieve it, as it
is the underlying theme in my system.
We will cover the importance of the reinforcement of self-recovery, teaching the dogs how to “learn to
learn” and how they can manipulate their environment to access reward. We will cover conditioned
passive and active reward techniques and show you why one technique creates concentration whilst the
other creates motivation.
Shaping puppy behaviour is a vital part of the program but what is most important is the teaching of
active and passive states and the three essential behaviours. This set the dogs up for a successful and
obedient career.
The entire system is about creating a very strong basic foundation which is all possible within your own
home, providing a distraction free environment for optimum learning. My strong opinion is that group
classes are detrimental to canine learning in the initial stages and the only way to teach a dog properly is
to create a quality distraction free environment at home. Once that is established, I will then teach you
how to allow increasing distractions to enhance and solidify your dog’s target behaviours, and lock them
in.
An exciting aspect of this system is that it rapidly improves your relationship with your dog and
maintains harmony throughout his life. A system that is to a large degree maintenance free because the
behaviours are thoroughly understood by the dog.
I will also show you the use of prompts and containment fields to assist the concept of errorless learning,
and how modern training aids only amplify your dog’s responses, with thoughtful application. The
learning systems are designed for people who want to establish a great working relationship with their
dog, control their family pet, compete at a high level or improve and manage their tactical Police Dog.

Kris Kotsopoulos has been involved in breeding and training dogs since 1981. He has worked with firsttime
dog owners through to the most demanding Law Enforcement Canines and their handlers, and
World Championship Competitors. Kris and his wife Tonia are breeders of Dobermanns and German
Shepherds under the kennel name “Von Forell”. His dogs and training philosophies have been
incorporated into many training systems by competitors and Law Enforcement Agencies worldwide.
Kris’s workshops are designed to give you a clear directive of how dogs learn, what drives them, how to
improve learning due to purposeful directives, and how to shape behaviour for a dynamic, focused and
harmonious performance. This is an opportunity to learn the latest cutting edge training systems to
deliver spirited, obedient animals on cue.
Having devoted the last 32 years of his life to research, development and education of the working dog,
paired with extensive work in the area of animal welfare, Kris has now expanded his professional
horizons by sharing his knowledge with the community as a consultant for a range of government
agencies, breed clubs and animal welfare groups.
Over the past three decades, Kris has travelled the globe in order to learn from the world’s best
international trainers, breeders and animal behaviourists. As a result of his enthusiasm and dedication for
greater knowledge, Kris has acquired an in-depth understanding of raising, developing and training dogs
for a variety of purposes.
Through the skills and successes he has achieved, Kris has gained a sound understanding of what
motivates animals to behave the way they do and just as importantly, how to apply this knowledge to
achieve specialised goals. Kris currently shares this knowledge by operating both national and
international training programs, seminars and workshops, each individually tailored to meet the needs of
the general community, other trainers and government agencies globally.
Kris has implemented a variety of learning systems ranging from basic family obedience, to the most
demanding competition, police, prison and professional security animals with an emphasis on true, open
and uncomplicated behaviour with stimulus control. He is truly committed to breaking down barriers
that exist for dogs and dog welfare in our community, and believes that consultation with breed clubs,
animal management officers and animal welfare groups will help achieve this goal.
“Purposeful, meaningful relationships between handlers and their dogs to create extraordinary
dogs and extraordinary handlers.”
Kris’s commitment to the dog world is further highlighted through his companies:
Kris is also a co-founder of the National Dogs Trainers Federation - a representative and educational
organisation for the dog training industry, which has now become the national representative body in
Australia for dog trainers from all fields. The NDTF offers Australia’s only Government accredited
nationally recognised dog trainer certification course. By using Kris’s strong links and networks with
other animal organisations, both nationally and internationally, Kris is able to assist with the
development of formal policies, contribute to ongoing research in the area of canine training and
behaviour, and further build on the necessary educational programs required to assert positive influence
and bring about permanent change.
