GOODY BAG BRINGS JOY TO
VERIFONE PASSENGER
Drivers and passengers have put on a brave face
during the Olympics despite major upheaval to
travel plans. One passenger had a particularly traumatic
experience after hailing a taxi at Charing Cross Station.
Njabulo Dlamini, a Financial Analyst from South
Africa, left his bag in the back of the taxi. It contained
his company laptop, two mobile phones, passport and
UK work visa. It also contained other visas for a busy
schedule of overseas business trips planned for August
and September. The driver was blissfully unaware of
the situation, processed the card fare for the journey and
disappeared off into the night. By the time he realised
what had happened, a remarkable chain of events had
already started to unravel.
The lost passport already meant that Dlamini had to
cancel a scheduled trip to France the next day, and had
two other European appointments jeopardised before
travelling further afield later in the summer. He was
effectively grounded. Having spent hours ‘holding’ on
automated phone helpdesks, Dlamini was facing an
unscheduled trip back to South Africa to reapply for his
passport and visas - a simple matter in theory but one
that he was told could take up to three months. He was
even forced to decline invitations to work elsewhere
around the world in the meantime as he had no passport.
In desperation, Dlamini checked his fare receipt and
contacted VeriFone. Staff at the VeriFone Operations
Centre in Kennington were able
to contact the driver, Edward
Goody, and arrange for the
safe return of the bag and all its
contents - including the passport
and a stale takeaway lunch.
Asher Moses of VeriFone
commented: “We were delighted Njabulo Dlamini
to reunite the passenger with his luggage. The honesty
and integrity of taxi drivers is recognised the world
over, they’re the ‘Best in the World’ and we’re proud to
do our bit to maintain the high standards that passengers
appreciate so much.”
Passenger Dlamini agrees. Like nearly 5,000 travelers
from 23 countries surveyed by Hotels.com every
year, he rates London taxis highly. For the fourth year
running, London taxis were voted “Best in the World”.
The poll also revealed that some of the more unusual
items left in cabs include a hamster and a flute, while
one Korean traveller lost a dried cuttlefish.
Having taken delivery of his lost luggage, Dlamini
personally thanked the team at VeriFone. “Thanks to
everyone at VeriFone for taking the time to look into
my desperate request. And special thanks to Mr Goody
for keeping my belongings safe. You saved my life. To
you all, I am greatly indebted, I will be forever grateful.
The age of miracles is still amongst us.”
JEDI MASTER GETS
THE KNOWLEDGE,
RIDING IN A
LONDON CAB
Since the launch of Vodafone liveried cabs in May last year, they
have collectively covered the distance between Earth and Venus. In
the latest advertising campaign Jedi Master Yoda is riding in the back
of a Vodafone branded taxi in London. He talks to his cab driver Jason
Hinton, highlighting the innovative mobile phone charging service
that Vodafone provides for free to all passengers in the back of the
1000 branded cabs that serve London. Yoda appeared in the second and
third Star Wars films as well as all three prequel trilogy films. He is a
renowned Jedi master, and made his first on-screen appearance in Star
Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back where he is responsible for
training Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Jedi. As he travels in one
of the cabs emblazoned with a bold Union Jack design, made up of
over 2000 London street names, Yoda comments on the extraordinary
features of his Lightsaber, which the cabbie Jason mistakes as a
reference to one of the latest smartphones. He explains that Yoda might
want to charge its battery whilst enjoying the ride.
your carriage licence at the coffee counter. One free coffee or tea per person per visit.
Jason was selected to star in the ad and while Yoda may be the first
intergalactic traveller he has ferried around, the Jedi Master is not the
first celebrity to take a seat in Jason’s cab. “I picked George Best up in
Chelsea,” Jason said. “Joanna Lumley was a really nice Lady - she told
me about her TV series on the Nile and then gave me a copy. Mostly I
get women who want to talk to me about their love lives.”
Danielle Crook, Director of Brand Marketing, Vodafone UK, said:
“Our eye-catching cabs have been a real hit with passengers since we
introduced them last year. The Union Jack design is a great addition to
the capital’s streets and the phone charging kit we have installed in the
vehicle means passengers know they will be able to give their phones
a power boost when they hail one of our cabs. These small things can
mean the world to people and are just one of the services that we have
introduced to keep people confidently connected on the go.”
Commenting on the starring roles that Jason and his taxi take in the
advert, Lisa Barnett, Director at Ubiquitous, who was responsible for
managing the driver auditions, commented: “We are very proud of our
Vodafone campaign and are especially thrilled that the team behind the
new TV ad felt that it was important to have a real Vodafone cabbie
play the supporting role to Yoda. Close to 100 Vodafone cabbies were
approached for the screen test, but the Force was strong in Jason, so he
secured the part.”
HAILO, THE BLACK CAB
APP THAT’S WINNING
BACK THE WORK!
It only seems like yesterday that Hailo was launched. That was almost
a year ago but since then things have certainly moved in the right
direction. Hailo now has over 5500 registered drivers which makes us
the largest network of drivers in London. We now have over 100,000
account customers and that figure is growing by on average a staggering
500 per day!
More and more drivers are saying that Hailo is the best thing to happen
to the taxi trade. Around 80% of our passengers are saying that they used
to use Private Hire and they are loving Hailo.
If you haven’t joined yet why don’t you pop into our driver office at
51 Great Suffolk Street and find out what is the talk of the taxi trade and
do something positive. Hailo is black cab only and is winning the work
back…over to you!
DRIVER TIP: MAXIMISE YOUR IPHONE GPS
Part of the Hailo driver experience includes being offered quality jobs
where (and when) you need them. But while we offer many features and
technology that help us deliver on this promise, there are a few things
out of our direct control that can improve your experience with the Hailo
driver network.
For example, the GPS technology on your phone that the Hailo app uses
to match your with nearby passengers can be hampered by a poor mobile
reception. One simple way to “turbo-charge” the performance of your
GPS is to combine it with your phone’s wifi function.
But as you may have encountered before, having wifi enabled can result
in your phone constantly trying to log onto networks as you move through
London.
In order to prevent this, but still receive the ‘turbo-charge’ effect on your
phone’s GPS, follow these steps:
1. Tap Settings
2. Tap WiFi Networks
3. Toggle the ‘Ask to Join Networks’ button to the ‘Off’
position
Making this one simple adjustment can help improve the
performance of your GPS without affecting the overall
speed and performance of your iPhone.
LONDON DJS LOVING HAILO TAXI APP
Maybe it’s the odd hours they work or maybe, or maybe like so many
others, they are simply fans of the service black cabbies provide, but
ever since Richard Bacon sent us that incredible endorsement via Twitter
shortly after our launch, we’ve been receiving amazing support from
local radio personalities.
This kind of endorsement means a great deal to Hailo and all the taxi
drivers we work with. The more Londoners learn about our drivers and
app, the more we can focus on delivering even more great features.
JAZZY B ON BBC LONDON
Recently, one of our drivers tweeted that modern soul legend and superb
London DJ Jazzy B had given black cabbies and Hailo a nice little mention
on his fab Back 2 Life show on BBC London.
Jazzy, this just may be the coolest shout out we’ll ever get.
Thanks.
ON HER MAJESTEY’S
OLYMPIC SERVICE
The London 2012 Olympics are focusing the eyes of the world on
the newly created London E20 postcode where, a majority of the
activity is taking place. This includes the staggering Opening Ceremony,
created by Oscar-winning film director Danny Boyle – the Ceremony
was watched live by an estimated one billion people worldwide. One of
the most memorable moments was the short film “Happy and Glorious”,
which saw Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II parachute from a helicopter
above the Olympic Stadium moments before landing safely and taking
her seat in the Royal Box. She did this in the company of James Bond
who had just arrived at Buckingham Palace in a London taxi supplied by
The London Cab Company Ltd.
Company director Gary Zylberszac received a call in April requesting
two identical iconic Fairways for a secret project called BBC 2012. These
are kept in stock, because identical
vehicles are often required as a time
saving exercise. This is so the crew
can shoot one cab from the outside
while preparing its twin with cameras
and lights for the internal shot. When
the vehicles were delivered to The
Mall they were searched by the
police before being driven onto the
forecourt of Buckingham Palace. It was a typical April day with heavy
rain showers and then brilliant sunshine (as
seen in the final cut of the film). Filming
took place between the rain showers when
the cab was waved through the front gates
of Buckingham Palace by the police,
reversed out and repeated time and time
again, much to the bemusement of all
the watching tourists. The road was then
closed to traffic
while a helicopter
carrying cameras
swooped down low over the Mall tracking the
cab for its arrival. For continuity the day was
spent mainly leathering off rainwater from the
Fairway between takes.
Strangely enough, one of the cabs used that day was the “hero” vehicle
in a previous Danny Boyle cult film “28 Days Later”. Here a group of
people attempt to escape from the ‘plague’ in a London taxi owned by
one of the characters! Once “Happy and Glorious” was shown at the
Opening Ceremony there was a sudden burst
of comments on Twitter thanking James
Bond for supporting London’s cab trade
during the Olympics while being sidelined
by the LOCOG, the ODA and TfL.
Daniel Craig is not the only James Bond
Lloyds Building in the City. The London Cab Company Ltd has been
supplying cabs for film shoots since the late 1990s. In that time the prop
1910 PANHARD ET LEVASSOR 12/15HP x5
‘W & G’ DUCROS LONDON TAXICAB
by Graham Waite
It was my pleasure to attend the recent Richard Edmonds auction
held at auction on Castle Coombe racing circuit on 30th June
and to successfully bid and purchase this lovely old Panhard
et Levassor taxi on behalf of London Vintage Taxi Association
member Gordon Elliott. The most numerous makes of London
cab post-1906 were the French Unic, introduced by dealers Mann
and Overton plus the Napier and Panhard taxicabs, both of which
were operated by taxi fleet owners W & G duCros of Acton, West
London. Only a small handful of very early taxis still survive,
mainly of the Unic and Beardmore variety and it is believed that
this is one of only 2 Panhard et Levassor taxis which still survive.
W&G duCros were commercial body builders who made bodies for many coaches,
buses and a variety of heavy goods vehicles. Around 1910 with the ever increasing
number of motorised taxicabs coming onto the market, they decided to run a large fleet
of no less than 500 taxis. Most cabs were purchased in chassis form with W&G duCros
building the taxi bodies onto the supplied chassis’s, this particular cab although made
by Panhard was purpose built on the Napier 15hp chassis with Panhard engine and
mechanicals. All W&G duCros drivers were required to wear a uniform consisting of
a white waterproof rain coat, brown leather gauntlets and a white flat-top cap. Their
trademark, the W&G logo was on the rear doors of all their taxis as well as their name
on the radiator grill. There are period photographs depicting long rows of W&G cabs
but these were mainly Napier cabs.
Panhard’s started early in 1889 and remained in business until 1967 and they are
one of the greatest names in motoring history. Panhard’s were successful in the early
racing world using large 15.4 litre engined cars. This Panhard Taxi is a rare survivor
of pre WWI motoring, particularly in such sound original condition. The taxi was
Panhard showroom, Lower Regent Street
sold new in England and first registered on July 10th July 1910.
In total 1,415 type X5 Panhard’s were made between the end of
1909 and the very beginning of 1912. From this total some 674
were sent to England, most of which are supposed to have been
sold as taxis. Although this taxi was owned and run by W&G
duCros it is believed that Panhard’s were generally purchased
by owner drivers because they were more expensive than other
manufacturers at the time (comparable with the cost of a semidetached
house at the time). The early history of the Panhard
is vague although it is believed that it was used on the streets
of London until around 1921. Then until the early fifties not much is known of its
whereabouts or use.
A firm of motor dealers bought the Taxi in the early 1950’s from a Birkenhead car
collector, and they set about restoring the car, with a view to hiring the car out for
various publicity events and film work. Indeed it appeared in the 1950’s film, ‘The
Man Who Loved Redheads’, starring Moira Shearer. Then in 1958 it was purchased
from a Mr G.W. Thompson, of Barnsley, by a relative of the previous owner, the Rev.
Martin Atkinson, who was a founder member of the Historic Commercial Vehicle
Club, with Lord Montague of Beaulieu. Accounts indicate that the Rev Atkinson had
first seen the car in 1944, and had tried to buy it. Every two years he went back in an
attempt to buy the taxi, but the answer was always the same. In 1952, he found that
the owner had died, but the cab had gone. Enquiries all over England were made but it
was pure chance that he encountered the cab in the back streets of Liverpool, waiting
to be shipped out to America.
There are numerous copies of
newspaper articles about the cab, mostly
relating to the 1950’s, and copies of
photographs of it, taking part in novelty
driving tests including a ‘rocking-ramp’
at Birkenhead road courtesy rally. There
are a few photographs of the Panhard
outside the London General Cab Co.
Ltd, alongside the then more modern
early 1950’s Austin FX3 cabs. The cab
Panhard at London General Cab Co with FX3s
is also featured in a piece of Pathe News
footage. In October 1958 the Panhard was used to collect the President of the Yellow
Cab Company, Mr Lansing Rothschild from Claridges Hotel in Mayfair and take him
down to meet Mr John Houghton head of the London Cab Company in Brixton Road
(there is a photograph of him entering the taxi).
It retains its original registration number of H 6460. Its chassis no. is 20370
and engine no. 21103. It is shown as a four cylinder 12/15 horse power. It has 3
speed gearbox with a quadrant change and leather coned clutch. In the passenger
compartment the hood opens for summer use and there is a small indicator which
the passenger can turn to indicate to the driver which direction they want him to
take (lucky we haven’t got those nowadays!). The lamps are all the original brass oil
burning type. The meter is an early Halda which is still working but believed not to
be the original.
The Panhard survives in basically sound condition. The wooden wheels are solid
and have layers upon layers of cream paint on them, this has probably protected
them and prevented wood worm from attacking them over the years. The rear seat
is in black leather and shows signs of various neat stitching repairs over the years.
The brass wheel centre caps have the cabs
registration number engraved upon them. Signs
indicate that the engine was rebuilt some years
ago and whilst the cab is driveable it will need
some work to re-commission it for general use.
The cab will shortly be available for charity
and other appearances, if you require more
LONDON CABBIES
LEARN TO ‘HACK’ A
QUARTER OFF THEIR
FUEL BILL
Some of London’s cab drivers have taken advantage of a training
programme designed to help them reduce carbon emissions. The
smarter driving techniques Course, run from the Brewery Road premises
of The London Taxi Company, has seen drivers taking part achieve an
average fuel saving of 24 per cent, against an average driver fuel saving
of 15 per cent.
Bob Saynor, Smarter Driving programme manager for the Energy
Saving Trust, said: “A London taxi driver uses around 1,590 litres of fuel
per year, releasing over four tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
With heavier traffic congestion and even more visitors using transport on
the city’s roads, emissions during this time are likely to increase to even
greater heights. The Smarter Driving techniques help drivers anticipate
further ahead, drive more smoothly and avoid unnecessary acceleration
and braking. It’s great to see cabbies adopt the techniques so readily, as the
combined reduction in emissions will contribute to a real difference in air
quality in the city. We hope they keep up the good work.” He added: “The
training the drivers have received should
help to minimise the impact of pollution
this summer and beyond. I would urge other
businesses in London interested in reducing
their fuel consumption to take the training
and techniques on board.”
A BOLD NEW VISION - THE NISSAN NV200
• Nissan unveils a new Hackney Carriage
• Affordable and 50% more fuel efficient, than alternative cabs
• Complies with TfL regulations - including 25ft turning circle
• All-electric e-NV200 prototype London Taxi to be tested in 2013
• Designed for superior comfort, space, convenience and accessibility
On 6th August Nissan unveiled a bold new vision for the future, NV200 London
Taxi. This new taxi will offer significantly reduced CO2 outputs compared to
current taxi models - a focus in line with the Mayor Boris Johnson’s Air Quality
strategy for London. Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, said: “Improving air
quality in London is one of the most important challenges I face as Mayor. Having
taken the significant step of introducing the first age limit for taxis in London, I
am absolutely delighted that manufacturers are stepping up to the plate and are
responding to the challenge I set in my air quality strategy to reduce taxi emissions
and improve efficiency. I look forward to when a fully competitive model comes to
market.” An all-electric e-NV200 concept is also set to undergo trials in the Capital.
Taxi versions of the NV200 have already been unveiled in Tokyo and it has also
been chosen as the exclusive New York City ‘Taxi of tomorrow’. Subject to final
testing, including a crash-test, the diesel-powered Nissan NV200 aims to receive
full London Taxi certification later this year.
The Nissan 2.7-litre TD27 diesel engine, the powertrain for LTI’s FX4 ‘Fairway’
black cab, was introduced for its improved speed, reliability and efficiency for
the London cabbie’s daily drive. The same engine also featured in the Fairway’s
successor, the TX1. The NV200 is set to build on this reputation. Designed from the
inside out for the well-being of passengers, drivers and even other road users, the
NV200 London Taxi delivers more comfort, space and convenience for occupants.
A particular focus was also placed on providing for passengers with mobility issues.
Alan Norton, from Assist UK, said: “Assist UK is proud to be associated with
Nissan in the development of an accessible taxi to meet the needs of all disabled
people. We have had the opportunity to bring together experts from all fields of
disability to work with designers to ensure the vehicle will work for all in their
transport needs. The work is ongoing and future refinements are planned after the
initial launch, as many ideas have been discussed and are currently undergoing
development. We congratulate Nissan for its initiative and wish them every success
with their project.”
DURABLE AND RELIABLE
The Nissan NV200 London Taxi is based on the company’s multi-purpose NV200
compact van - a vehicle which has won many awards including International
Van Of The Year. Launched at end of 2009, the model has been introduced to 40
countries, selling over 100,000 units worldwide. The Nissan NV200 London Taxi
comfortably seats five adults - three on a rear bench with two on rear-facing, folddown
seats. The front passenger seat has been removed to create space for luggage.
It has sliding passenger doors, which were developed for easy open and close. The
diesel version of the Nissan NV200 London Taxi is expected to be competitively
priced below the new TX4 and will be available through a designated ‘specialist’
Nissan dealer.
RUNNING COSTS
Nissan’s NV200 promises significantly improved running costs, with the frugal
1.5 dCi 89 HP EuroV, 6-speed manual drivetrain achieves 53.3mpg on a combined
cycle. Nissan believes that over the course of a year, NV200 London Taxi drivers
would spend around 50% less - about £700 - on fuel than TX4 drivers. Exact
specifications will not be known until further testing is carried out; these are
figures based on estimates and specification figures of existing NV200 van. With
a focus on improving air quality in the city, the NV200 London Taxi’s Euro V
engine only emits up to 139g/km of CO2. More importantly, the harmful NOx and
PM (particulate) gases on which authorities are seeking particular improvement in
‘clean air’ legislation, would be reduced by an estimated 135 metric tonnes and 20
metric tonnes per year.
An all electric version could have an even bigger impact on London’s air quality.
Having been the first car manufacturer to mass produce a 100% electric family car
with its trail-blazing Nissan LEAF, Nissan could cement its place at the forefront
of motoring technology with the introduction of an all-electric e-NV200 London
Taxi. With running costs estimated to be around one fifth of a conventional, dieselpowered
Hackney Carriage it is likely to be popular with drivers too.
Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President of Nissan, said: “Nissan is proud to be
delivering a 21st century vision for one of London’s most iconic vehicles. The
‘black cab’ is as much a part of the London landscape as Big Ben and, whilst there
will always be a place for that familiar silhouette, the Nissan NV200 London
Taxi focuses as much attention on its interior as the exterior - a better experience
for drivers and passengers. The design process for the NV200 London Taxi was
exhaustive and will be further improved. In addition to ensuring drivers would
be comfortable spending extended hours behind the wheel, we’ve had to consider
every user for this vehicle - there are no specific customer profiles in the back of
a London cab. Adults, children, business professionals, foreign visitors, disabled
travellers - they’re all potential customers. We’ve even considered those who might
never get inside the taxi but who will benefit from features such as the model’s
lower CO2 emissions or the un-obstructing sliding doors.
“The Nissan NV200 is a global taxi, launching in the biggest and brightest cities
in the world. Safe, comfortable, efficient and convenient - it’s a great step forward
for providing a transport solution that is good for both its users and other city
inhabitants.”
EXTERIOR DETAIL
The clean, functional design of the NV200 London Taxi combines styling cues
from existing Nissan passenger cars and commercial vehicles and adds a number of
unique features such as the dramatic upswept swage line that neatly frames the door
glass. This sculpted line runs around the front of the vehicle to create a dramatic
sense of movement, while the deep side windows provide enhanced visibility - an
essential quality in a busy city environment. The distinctive grille flows into the
slimline wraparound headlights, while body-coloured bumpers extend seamlessly
into the specially widened front wings to create a smooth, powerful look. The
striking extended wheel arches are unique to the London Taxi, and accommodate
the vehicle’s wider track and modified suspension and steering system.
The NV200 London Taxi also features unique front direction indicators.
Relocated into the lower half of the bumper they sit further towards the outer edges
of the vehicle and are integrated with LED daytime running lights. This gives them
greater visibility in urban traffic.
INTERIOR STYLING
To give passengers the best possible view out, the NV200 London Taxi features
large side windows that extend the full length of the vehicle. The glass area is
uninterrupted by doorframes or body pillars to create a sleek, uncluttered look.
Continuing the theme, the door handles are flush rather than proud of the bodywork.
Twin sliding doors are wide, easy to use and make it much easier for occupants
carrying large or heavy bags to get in and out. To further improve access for all
LONDON TAXI
passengers, the left-hand door aperture has been enlarged (30mm increase in width,
20mm in height) to meet the requirements of wheelchair users. As a result of this
modification, the NV200 London Taxi meets all TfL regulations in regard to access,
and has been approved by disability group Assist UK. The organisation has been
involved at numerous stages in the vehicle’s development, and has provided the
design and engineering team valuable feedback. At the rear, the NV200 London
Taxi has practical twin loading doors split 70/30. These give access to a large
luggage area that can be altered by sliding the seat units backwards and forwards.
The seating follows a conventional London Taxi five-seater layout with a rear
bench (capable of accommodating three passengers) and two rear-facing, folddown
seats opposite. However, the NV200 differs from traditional London Taxis
by having the rear bench split 70/30 and mounted on tracks. This allows for much
greater cabin flexibility, as the two
seat units can be moved independently
to accommodate large or awkwardly
shaped luggage. This facility also has
benefits when carrying passengers in
wheelchairs as it creates more floor
area in which to turn and manoeuvre.
To free up even more luggage space,
the front passenger seat has been
removed.
The two rearward-facing seats are
attached to a new driver bulkhead
that separates the driver from the
passenger compartment. Constructed
from steel and plastic, this reinforced
divide has a dog-leg shape that creates
extra legroom and further aids the
loading of a wheelchair. The bulkhead
also incorporates mountings for the
seatbelts, along with fixing points to enable a wheelchair to be secured. An easy-touse
loading ramp has been developed and can be stored within the cabin.
The NV200 London Taxi has a large panoramic glass roof. Measuring 1.2m by
1.2m, it gives passengers an unrivalled view of the sky above and has the added
advantage of providing more headroom. The cabin lighting control switch has been
installed in the approved position, while a door-activated floor lighting system has
been developed, fitted and approved. Even the seat facings have been developed
specifically for use in taxis. Not only do they feature high-visibility yellow panels
at their leading edges, they are also finished in a special hard-wearing material that
is easy to clean.
The front of the vehicle offers drivers a comfortable and well-appointed ‘office’
in which to conduct a day’s work. Designed to offer long-distance comfort for
professional users, the design of the driving environment has been carefully thoughtout.
The cabin abounds with clever touches, such as card holders on the backs of the
sun visors; trays within the centre console storage area; and a convenience hook for
hanging goods. The door pockets are large enough to hold two A4-sized map books,
while a secret compartment within the glovebox can house valuables out of sight.
The instrument panel houses one of the most comprehensive trip computers
available anywhere. As well as the more usual pieces of information - fuel
consumption, service intervals, mileage displays etc - the computer can be
programmed by the driver to provide a helpful shift-up display. Another crucial
feature for any hard working cabbie is Bluetooth connectivity. This is fitted as
standard and allows for hand-free operation of most compatible phones.
TURNING CIRCLE, DRIVETRAIN AND CHASSIS
• Modified suspension and steering system to achieve required 25ft turning circle
• Unique ‘steering knuckle’ strut design delivers greater wheel articulation
• Electric power steering for efficiency and ease of use at low speeds
• Frugal and clean 1.5-litre dCi turbodiesel engines
• Potential savings of over £650 for taxi drivers covering 22k miles a year
In order to meet the CoF requirement for a 25ft (7.62m) turning circle, the NV200’s
entire front suspension and steering assembly has been redesigned. Developed and
engineered by an engineering team at Vectayn in the UK, the new system allows for
greater wheel articulation with no compromise to the vehicle’s interior packaging.
To achieve the required level of articulation, both front wheels have been moved
100mm outboard. In addition, the front suspension has been changed from the
standard MacPherson Strut to a new design that incorporates a separate steering
knuckle connected via swivel bearings.
With a conventional strut, the whole assembly turns when steering is applied. By
switching to a separate knuckle layout, only the knuckle and the hub turn. This, in
turn, allows for much greater wheel articulation and ensures that the wheel remains
perpendicular to the road at all times.
Combined with the wider track (which allows for the turned wheel to clear
the inner wheel arch), modified steering rack and double Cardan driveshafts that
incorporate two universal joints, the NV200 London Taxi has a turning circle of less
than 25ft (7.62m). The new assembly is mounted on a sub-frame that is connected
to the vehicle with compliant rubber mounts. These mounts help isolate noise and
vibration while a revised anti-roll bar gives effective control of body roll under
cornering.
At the rear, the NV200 London Taxi features double-elliptical leaf springs. The
entire rear suspension system is very compact and uses heavily-angled dampers to
minimise cabin intrusion. This has the added benefit of keeping the floor as low
as possible. The NV200 London Taxi also features an impressive array of safety
features designed to protect occupants and pedestrians. High intensity cabin and
door impact absorption structures help provide a safety shield around occupants
in an accident, while pedestrian safety is enhanced by the use of energy-absorbing
materials in the bumper, bonnet and cowl.
The taxi is fitted with an electric power steering, with a strong self-centering
action at lower engine speeds, it makes light work of tight manouevres and delivers
excellent feedback to the driver.
Anti-lock brakes (ABS) are standard on NV200, and are augmented by Brake
Assist and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD). Brake Assist maintains
maximum deceleration during an emergency stop even if the driver reduces the
pedal effort while EBD constantly alters the front disc to rear drum balance to
achieve optimum brake performance, automatically compensating for differing
passenger weights.
The NV200 London Taxi is powered by a frugal 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel
engine with two power outputs: 89hp and 110hp. Based on the K9K 1.5dCi
common rail unit, the 1,461cc eight-valve engine combines excellent fuel economy
with low maintenance costs and punchy performance. It also has exceptionally low
CO2 emissions that start from 139g/km (89hp engine) - a figure that comfortably
undercuts existing London Taxi offerings.
Versions fitted with the 89hp engine feature a five-speed manual transmission,
while 110hp variants benefit from a six-speed unit. Both powerplants are fully
compliant with the latest EuroV emissions regulations.
DEALERSHIPS
The NV200 London Taxi will be sold through a designated Nissan ‘specialist’
dealer and will be competitively priced, significantly below the current London
Taxi Company TX4. More details and a pricing structure for options and features
will be announced closer to the launch date.
Five Die In Bogota Taxi Chase
Five people died and two others were injured when their car crashed
during a high-speed chase with four taxis through the streets of
Columbian capital Bogota. The chase began when the driver of a
Mazda car failed to stop after colliding with one of the taxis. Police
said the Mazda lost control and spun into a concrete electricity pole
and then hit the cab.
“We crashed with a taxi just after coming out of a disco but didn’t
stop,” one of the two survivors of the car wreck told a local television
news programme. “Four taxis then came chasing after us,” he added.
Bogota cab drivers frequently carry guns or knives to defend themselves
in the capital, where crime rates are spiralling. They also call fellow
radio drivers to gang up on passengers who fail to pay fares. One taxi
driver was arrested.
CCTV Turns UK Cabbies into Snoops?
We don’t usually look at the UK in Global News but this one grabbed
our attention because it could be important. It even involves those who
have the notice but not the equipment – and no, that isn’t meant to be
a joke!
A number of London taxis are fitted with CCTV, the idea being that
should anything untoward occur then an image of the perpetrator would
be captured. Any images can only be downloaded by the licensing
authority via the Met Police, but the CCTV option is now in danger
following an order from the Information Commissioner’s Office to
Southampton City Council, who since 2009 have ordered local taxi
drivers to video and record their passengers’ conversations.
Now information commissioner, Christopher Graham, has told the
licensing authority that all the equipment must be removed from their
taxis by 1 November 2012. He said that by requiring taxi operators to
record all conversations and images while the vehicles were in use,
Southampton City Council were going too far. Mr Graham added: “We
recognise the council’s desire to ensure the safety of passengers and
drivers, but this has to be balanced against the degree of privacy that
most people would reasonably expect in the back of a taxi. However,
their policy is a breach of the Data Protection Act and recording all
conversations is out of proportion to the very low amount of trouble
seen by taxi drivers. It is also important to stop the recordings because
many drivers use their vehicles outside work.”
The ICO – sometimes referred to as the Snoop Patrol – recently
stopped Oxford City Council from implementing a similar CCTV
service in its taxis surveillance policy. They closed by saying:
“We hope this action sends a clear message to local authorities that
they must properly consider all the legal obligations on them before
requiring the installation of CCTV or similar equipment and that audio
recording should be very much the exception, rather than the rule.”
Nothing special in this story other than to show that London’s problems
are by no means unique. A Ghanaian judge in the south eastern Atlantic
coast city of Tema recently sentenced an “unlicensed taxi driver” (yes,
a minicab driver!) who faced a touting offence to 14 days in prison -
with hard labour! Ben Arthur pleaded guilty at the court to charges of
picking up unauthorised passengers and in doing so, preventing the free
flow of traffic. The prosecutor told the court that a policeman on patrol
saw the accused park his vehicle at the local business centre. Arthur
was then seen to ask passers-by if they wanted a taxi. Meanwhile,
traffic struggled to squeeze through the small gap he had left.
“Let this sentence be a lesson to other unlicensed “taxi drivers,” said
the judge after mentioning the hard labour. Make it six months and you
might even get rid of them in London!
Scottish Taxi Driver Gets Ticket For Helping
A Blind Passenger!
Like London, traffic wardens in Glasgow seem to be rather over
zealous. This stems from a spate of parking tickets (PCNs) issued after
drivers had briefly left their cabs to help disabled passengers – one
driver especially who received a ticket while helping a blind passenger
from his TX4.
Taxi authorities now want talks with the council following another
driver, Iain Robertson, who received a PCN that included a photo of
the TX2 driver helping a one-legged passenger into a shop! A taxi
spokesperson told Global News: “It’s ridiculous. You can’t possibly
leave a blind person or someone with one leg by the side of the road,
especially when they aren’t even familiar with the area? How can you
provide a service with these type of restrictions?”
The local authority had refused to cancel the disputed tickets despite
an appeal from the first driver, James Devine. A computerised log from
his radio circuit showed that his cab had stopped for just two minutes
outside a dental hospital while dropping off the blind passenger. But
the council rejected his appeal. That’s what you call a council with
heart... a bit like London?
Polish Taxi Drivers Demonstrate In Support Of
Death Penalty
Angered by a spate of murders of their fellow taxi drivers, Polish
cabbies drove through major cities recently in a demonstration to
demand the restoration of the death penalty. “The death penalty would
deter criminals,” said Kazimierz Dobrowolski, a 60-year-old taxi
driver from Warsaw.
Poland abolished capital punishment many years ago leaving life
imprisonment as the country’s toughest sentence with defendants being
able to apply for a conditional release after 25 years.
Across the world, the London taxi service is renowned for its drivers - and the
iconic vehicles they drive. There are also an increasing number of people
who want to own a vintage vehicle and the taxi is their vehicle of choice. For
many of these people, once owning a cab becomes a reality they are passionate
about restoring their vehicle – some just for pleasure, whilst some use them for
business purposes. Many join The London Vintage Taxi Association, which was
founded in the UK, but today has members around the world. Some members
of the London Vintage Taxi Association are cab drivers in London and some are
licensed elsewhere in the UK. There is a dedicated American section in the USA.
There, as in the UK, many of the members own and preserve historic London taxis.
It isn’t always a case of just “spit and polish” - many of members’ cars have been
rescued in derelict condition, with many years spent on the restoration process.
Members receive a full colour, glossy bi-monthly magazine, ‘Vintage Taxi’.
EVENTS SHOWCASE THE CABS
The LVTA can answer quite a wide range of questions about the London taxi and
its history, from researchers, family historians and writers. Each year, the LVTA
attends a number of rally events although unfortunately one of the larger shows,
as well as some of the smaller events, this year was cancelled due to the inclement
weather. Over the weekend of October 6/7th this year LVTA members will be
showing some of their vehicles at the London Transport Depot Open Week-End
held at the Acton Depot. There will also be display cases containing memorabilia
and driving tests for members of the public and ‘Mystery
Tours’ in vintage cabs round the local area. Bill Munro,
a London taxi driver, and a well-known trade writer, will
be giving a couple of lectures every day. Story telling
will also take place with readings from the recently
published “Toby The Taxi” book, which was created by
LVTA member Peter Marshal) and a ‘Knowledge’ trail
for younger visitors.
Once again this year the LVTA will
have a stand at the Footman James
Classic Car Show, held at the NEC in
Birmingham. This is always a wellattended
popular event with many
vintage cars on show. Visitors last
year got the chance to take a close
look at some of the members’ vintage
This event takes place over the weekend 16th-18th November.
If you are interested in joining the LVTA, please contact the Membership
Secretary, Stephen Dimmock by email Stephen.Dimmock@btinternet.com or by
MAYOR OF LONDON’S
ROADS TASK FORCE
London’s roads face a number of challenges in the short, medium and long term:
• Conflicts between competing uses and users
• Need for significant investment and London’s road asset, to ensure they are fit
for a 21st century city
• Growth in London’s population and employment will add to existing pressures
on the road network
• Rising expectations of quality of public space
• Imperative to continue improving safety on London’s roads
Roads are vital to the Capital’s economy and to movement around the city;
roughly 80% of all passenger trips and many freight trips in London are made
by road. London’s roads are also important public spaces and are the location
for economic and social activity. The first major strategic review of London’s
road network for a generation has begun. It is working to propose long term
solutions to improve the capital’s roads and tackle some of London’s most high
profile junctions such as Hammersmith Flyover, Purley Way, Wandsworth Town
Centre, Euston Road, Archway, and Kings Cross. The Roads Task Force was a
key election pledge made by the Mayor; the group is looking at how TfL and the
boroughs could redesign gyratories and congestion blackspots, make journeys
more reliable, and continue to make roads safer for all users. It is also looking at
how the road network could better serve local communities, helping to transform
the urban realm, cut pollution and ease congestion across the capital. More than
70% of trips to work are made entirely by walking, cycling, driving or taking the
bus, and the remaining 30% use roads to access rail and tube stations. On top of
this, almost 90% of freight deliveries in and out of London are made using the
capitals road network.
As London’s population grows by an expected 1.25 million people by
2031, congestion will also rise by an anticipated 14% despite a programme of
combative measures and investment. This will place increasing challenges and
demands on the road network, as we strive to strike heighten the local quality
of life while enabling efficient movement of people and goods around the city
without weakening London’s productivity and competitiveness. Boris Johnson
said: “A healthy road network is essential for this great city; for our economy,
for pedestrians, bus passengers, motorists, and cyclists. London deserves a road
network that isn’t just a relic of 1950s and 1960s urban planning, but a road
system that is fit for the 21st century. My Roads Task Force will consider every
need and help ensure the future success of our capital.”
An interim report will be prepared for the Mayor by November 2012. The
final report published in spring 2013. Together with the Mayor’s Rail Vision,
this report will form an important part of TfL’s contribution to the Mayor’s 2020
vision for the capital. You can submit your comments at https://consultations.
tfl.gov.uk/roads/taskforce or by email to RoadsTaskForce@tfl.gov.uk – the
consultation is now open and runs until 14th September 2012.
FROM RUSSIA WITH LUBOV
Russian folklore relates that Mari Vanna invited weary guests and
travellers into her kitchen for a home-cooked meal and a cosy retreat.
Situated in the heart of Knightsbridge between the doorsteps of One Hyde
Park and the Bulgari hotel, the restaurant is specialising in “babushka
cooking” and the menu of Russian dishes also reflects the influences from
the former Soviet countries of Georgia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan amongst
others. Comforting, traditional dishes such as Borsch with Pampushka (a
Russian beetroot soup with smoked beef) and Harcho (a rich Georgian lamb
soup with rice and a spicy adjika sauce) feature alongside carefully crafted
Pelmeni (Siberian veal dumplings with a light herb sauce) and Ukrainian
Galubtzi (meat and rice encased in cabbage leaves). Additionally the menu
offers an extensive selection of salads and lighter dishes displaying a liberal
use of fresh herbs.
Guests are transported into the Russian
home of a bygone era where shelves
are adorned with matryoshka dolls,
trinkets and tchotchke. A traditional
Russian Pechka oven, prominent in
many Russian tales, takes pride of place
in the dining room. Set against a fine
backdrop with high ceilings adorned
with elaborate chandeliers, a nod to its
elegant location, Mari Vanna displays
cosy details within an unparalleled,
unique and wonderfully comfortable
setting. At the heart of Mari Vanna, a
large hand-painted table is covered
with exquisite cakes. A new offering
is Afternoon Tea and also a light lunch
menu.
