The city is being revitalised by a dedicated regeneration company, Opportunity Peterborough, and has recently been included as a growth area within the “London - Stansted - Cambridge” corridor. Peterborough continues to capitalise on its excellent location, transport connectivity, labour availability and strength in important sectors and industries, such as food and the environment. Peterborough has been selected as a distribution location by a number of important companies - for instance, Debenhams and Willis & Gambier on the adjacent site and IKEA, whose distribution centre is located nearby. Tesco expressed satisfaction with the quality of job applicants when it moved to the North East of Peterborough for a similar - scale distribution warehouse. Generally, labour costs in Greater Peterborough are highly competitive compared with the national average, especially in comparison with London and the South-East. Other major manufacturing / distribution occupiers include; Indesit, Peter Brotherhood, Baker Perkins, Perkins Engines and Mars Petfoods. THE COMMUNITY Housing is another strong feature in Peterborough, with the development of more than 7,500 new homes in four neighbourhoods at Hampton, south of the city. Hampton is the largest private development in Europe, a mixed-use community on 2,500 acres of land. Most of the land has been remediated and brought back into productive use for the first time in decades, after 125 years of extraction by the brick industry. Besides residential development, the Hampton Masterplan includes retail, industrial, commercial and leisure / community amenities, large open areas and nature reserves. The ratio of house prices to average wage incomes compares well with the wider region and very favourably with the rest of the southern counties. Hampton will be a considerable advantage for re-locating staff at all levels, including management.
