Prior to co-founding Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture LLP in 2006, Bob was an Associate Partner in the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, and had previously worked at design firms in Toronto, Hong Kong and Osaka, Japan. Most recently, Bob joined Adrian Smith, Gordon Gill and Roger Frechette as founding principals of PositivEnergy Practice (www. pepractice.com), an energy, engineering, and consulting firm that designs and implements energy, resource management and carbon reduction strategies for public and private clients around the world.
KICK-OFF SPEAKER: Solar Decathlon House PRESENTER: LORAINE FOWLOW Canada’s entry from the University of Calgary for the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 is a unique response in steel to the culture of Treaty 7 Native Peoples in Southern Alberta…inspired by the tipi and relating to the sun as a traditional source of energy and life. SESSION 1A: The Marriage of Wood & Steel Creating Architecture Masterpieces PRESENTER: ROB THIRD Using practical examples of hybrid steel and wood structures, this session will provide design and engineering insights from a steel fabricator’s and a constructability point of view. Rob will emphasize the importance of cooperative partnership between the designers and the various workshops, right into the installation process. Feature Projects are the Richmond Olympic Oval and Vancouver Skytrain Stations. SESSION 1B: Proven Practices for Incremental Launching of Steel Girder Bridges PRESENTER: ROBERT GALE This session will provide an overview of the process of incremental launching, indicating potential benefi ts and limitations of this seldom used bridge construction method. SESSION 2A: The Case of the Disappearing Right Angle: Innovation in Architectural Steel PRESENTER: TERRI MEYER BOAKE Rectilinear buildings of the Modern Movement have given way to innovative structures that, using a combination of exposed and concealed steel, challenge architects, engineers and fabricators to work together to design structures that showcase diagrids, tension systems, curved steel and castings. This will be the focus of Terri’s talk using photos and information found in her recent book “Understanding Steel Design: An Architectural Design Manual”. SESSION 2B: Connections for Steel Structures 2012 PRESENTER: JOHN R. MARK John will discuss the types of connections utilized in steel structures today: Fasteners (bolts & welds) used in to-days structures and the controlling infl uences of the CSA S16-09 Standard in to-day’s connection design. He will provide ideas and tips for achieving economical and practical structural steel connections during the building design stage. SESSION 3: THE BOW: A Case Study in Innovation PRESENTERS: STEPHEN CARRUTHERS, IAN WASHBROOK, KERRY GILLIS, and TIM VERHEY FEATURE PROJECT The Bow The use of structural steel in the Bow Tower ensured that the design architects and client achieved their goal of a truly modern, unique, and sustainable high rise tower for their headquarters in Calgary. A panel consisting of an architect, structural engineer, construction manager, and the steel contractor will discuss the innovations in architectural design and design delivery, innovations in engineering that resulted in cost and schedule benefi ts, as well as innovations in methods of fabrication, erection and project delivery that brought such a monumental structure to reality. SESSION 4A: A Moment in Life of Penny Lane: Framing Eighth Avenue Place to LEED Excellence PRESENTER: SYLVIE BOULANGER AND LUKE GROENEVELD After intense deliberation of design, functionality, and schedule, Eighth Avenue Place’s moment of construction began in 2007. It is now towering like a glistening blue mountain on the southwest edge of Calgary’s downtown core. The angled planes and sloping surfaces of the tower evoke the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. What moment was decisive How did the team conceive and frame the unique steel outrigger-to-concrete core moment connections, inclined columns and winter garden to accommodate the architectural and engineering design requirements of this forty-nine storey offi ce tower What strategies did the team use to progress towards a LEED CS Platinum rating What other features led the team to achieve the one fl oor per week expectation and deliver 12,000 tons of structural steel mostly by rail SESSION 4B: Fracture and Fatigue of Steel Structures – What you need to know to extend the safe life of your structure PRESENTER: GILBERT GRONDIN Gilbert will present background information about the causes of fracture and fatigue and how to avoid such failures, exploring all structure phases: design, fabrication, and service life. SESSION 5A: Concrete or Steel Considerations for the Edmonton Clinic Buildings PRESENTER: JEFF DIBATTISTA The presentation will compare and contrast the choice of structural materials: structural steel and cast-in-place concrete for two projects, the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy and the Edmonton Clinic South. Consideration will be given to functionality, constructability, cost, schedule, and aesthetics, and to drawing lessons learned that can be applied to help other project teams make successful choices of structural materials for their projects. SESSION 5B: Industrial Steel Projects: By the way…Can you do it cheaper and faster PRESENTER: GREG MIAZGA Greg will discuss why good structural design must not only satisfy building code and owner requirements, but should also allow for economical and fast construction. This talk will cover the more important considerations that can affect cost and schedule of major industrial projects, from a fabricator’s perspective.
