In addition to these lecture courses, daily discussion/problem sessions were held in<br />

the afternoon (4,5 hours each week).<br />

Evening seminars (25 January and 1 February) were given by B. de Wit (UU) entitled:<br />

Black hole entropy and K. Jungmann (KVI) entitled: Precision tests of the standard<br />

model. The other evening presentations (15 minutes) were given by the students.<br />

Twenty-one (21) people participated. Seventeen (17) of them were from the Netherlands,<br />

three (3) participants came from Belgium (2 KU Leuven, 1 UL Brussels) and<br />

one (1) participant came from Copenhagen. Further information is given in appendix<br />

C.<br />

Statistical Physics and Theory of Condensed Matter (SPTCM)<br />

The DRSTP Postgraduate Course (AIO/OIO school) Statistical Physics and Theory<br />

of Condensed Matter was held from 15-19 May <strong>2006</strong> in Hotel & conference center De<br />

Bergse Bossen, Driebergen. The programme was organized by J. van den Brink (UL)<br />

and R. van Roij (UU) and included the following lectures (4 hours each):<br />

M. Katsnelson (RU): Path integrals<br />

C. Morais Smith (UU): Dissipation in quantum systems<br />

P. van der Schoot (TUE): Self organisation in soft matter<br />

M. van Hecke (UL): Jamming and force networks in granular matter<br />

In addition to these lecture courses, daily discussion/problem sessions were held in the<br />

afternoon (2 hours for each lecture course). The course of M. Katsnelson consisted of 6<br />

hours lectures and no discussion/problem sessions. An evening seminar (18 May) was<br />

given by D. van Delft (NRC Handelsblad) entitled: Worth publishing! How do editors<br />

of the ‘NRC Handelsblad’ select, describe and make scientific research interesting<br />

for their readers. The other evening presentations (10 minutes) were given by the<br />

students.<br />

Twenty-one (21) students participated. All participants were from the Netherlands.<br />

Further information is given in appendix C.<br />

3.1.2 Guest lecturers<br />

Prof. dr. A.V. Ashtekar (Penn State Univ.) occupied the Kramers Chair at Utrecht<br />

University from 1 April to 1 June <strong>2006</strong>. He taught a lecture course on Black holes in<br />

fundamental physics.<br />

Prof. dr. D.R. Nelson (Harvard University) occupied the Lorentz Chair at Leiden<br />

University from 1 May to 1 June <strong>2006</strong>. He taught a lecture course on Topics in<br />

statistical biophysics and quantitative biology.<br />

Prof. dr. M. Roček (SUNY, Stony Brook) occupied the Van der Waals Chair at the<br />

Universiteit van Amsterdam from 1 January to 31 July <strong>2006</strong>. He taught a lecture<br />

course on Supersymmetry and supergravity.
