C<strong>it</strong>ing Indirect Sources (c<strong>it</strong>ing a source-w<strong>it</strong>hin-a source)<br />
When using a source th<strong>at</strong> c<strong>it</strong>es or references another source, name the original source in your<br />
sentence. However, your in-text c<strong>it</strong><strong>at</strong>ion will include the secondary source.<br />
For example, you are reading Diana Hacker’s A Wr<strong>it</strong>er’s Reference, <strong>and</strong> she quotes Bob<br />
Newhart. You want to use Bob Newhart’s m<strong>at</strong>erial, even though <strong>it</strong> <strong>is</strong> Hacker’s book. Your in-text<br />
c<strong>it</strong><strong>at</strong>ion may look like the following:<br />
According to Bob Newhart (as c<strong>it</strong>ed in Hacker, 2005, p. 102), “Wr<strong>it</strong>ing <strong>is</strong> the single gre<strong>at</strong>est<br />
part of higher educ<strong>at</strong>ion.”<br />
L<strong>is</strong>t the secondary source in your reference l<strong>is</strong>t. For th<strong>is</strong> example, Hacker’s book <strong>is</strong> the<br />
secondary source. Your reference page will look like th<strong>is</strong>:<br />
Hacker, D. (2005). A wr<strong>it</strong>er’s reference. New York: Penguin.<br />
If You Still Are Not Sure When To C<strong>it</strong>e Inform<strong>at</strong>ion, Use the Following Checkl<strong>is</strong>t:<br />
C<strong>it</strong>e the main, key words, or ideas presented from another source, even if you put them in your<br />
own words.<br />
C<strong>it</strong>e inform<strong>at</strong>ion gained through interviewing or conversing w<strong>it</strong>h another person, face to face,<br />
over the phone, or in wr<strong>it</strong>ing. However, only c<strong>it</strong>e personal communic<strong>at</strong>ion such as interviews<br />
or emails in the body of your paper, not on the reference page.<br />
In-text c<strong>it</strong><strong>at</strong>ion example for personal communic<strong>at</strong>ion:<br />
(A. Woods, personal communic<strong>at</strong>ion, May 29, 2008).<br />
C<strong>it</strong>e when you reprint diagrams, illustr<strong>at</strong>ions, charts, pictures, or other v<strong>is</strong>ual m<strong>at</strong>erials.<br />
Common Knowledge <strong>and</strong> Items Not Needing Document<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
Your personal observ<strong>at</strong>ions, insights, <strong>and</strong> conclusions about a subject do not need c<strong>it</strong><strong>at</strong>ions.<br />
W<strong>it</strong>h th<strong>is</strong> in mind, much of your work <strong>at</strong> <strong>Franklin</strong> requires you to use supporting research.<br />
You do not need to c<strong>it</strong>e when you use "common knowledge"— generally-accepted facts or<br />
general defin<strong>it</strong>ions, common sense observ<strong>at</strong>ions, myths, urban legends, <strong>and</strong> facts accepted<br />
w<strong>it</strong>hin d<strong>is</strong>ciplines (e.g., in ecology, “recycling <strong>is</strong> beneficial to the environment” <strong>is</strong> a generallyaccepted<br />
fact). Defining “common knowledge” can be confusing, as “common knowledge”<br />
may be different from person to person; if you are not sure whether or not inform<strong>at</strong>ion should<br />
be <strong>at</strong>tributed, c<strong>it</strong>e.<br />
Generally speaking, inform<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>is</strong> common knowledge if you find the same inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
undocumented in <strong>at</strong> least five credible sources. Add<strong>it</strong>ionally, inform<strong>at</strong>ion might be common<br />
knowledge if the inform<strong>at</strong>ion you're presenting <strong>is</strong> something your readers will already know.
