Sponsored Schools
We work hard at being Xaverian. Back in August
we asked our student leaders to pick a Xaverian
value for special emphasis this school year. e
students chose zeal. at single-minded devotion,
ardent enthusiasm, and intense drive is what we
wish for all our students – in the classroom, on the
stage, in service, and on the sports field.
In articles featuring alumni from across the decades, this issue of e Counselor
highlights the zeal that goes to the heart of what it means to be Xaverian.
e core values which took root in some cases more than half a century ago
continue to bear fruit long after graduation from Our Lady of Good Counsel
High School.
Two alumni, from the Class of 1962, Br. Bill Griffin and Br. Mike McCarthy
have recently celebrated 50 years in the Congregation of the Xaverian Brothers.
eir work with orphans and school children in the highlands of Haiti is a
beautiful expression of their zeal for the Xaverian way of life. ey manifest
God’s care and compassionate love through a life lived in solidarity with and
availability to the poor and marginalized. is Easter, eight Good Counsel
students will spend a week with the Brothers in Haiti.
Closer to home, Andy Collins, Class of 1982 has earned well-deserved
recognition as the 2012 Ryken Award winner. Andy has worked at Good
Counsel since graduating from Harvard in 1986. e Ryken Award, equivalent
to a teacher of the year award, is an apt recognition not only of Andy’s
exceptional talent as an English teacher but also his sustained commitment to
peace and justice. Andy’s initiative has resulted in the coming together of our
first ever alumni service trip to El Salvador in the New Year.
And, by no means the least of our stories, we are in the 25th year of having
female students on the Good Counsel campus. e folks who have been here a
long time tell me there was some trepidation in opening the doors of the school
to girls back in the fall of 1988. A quarter century later, we have the gift of
hindsight and full knowledge that our school is the stronger for having become
co-educational.
