Ever since I started living in London, one of the most multicultural cities in Europe, I’ve noticed how people of different nationalities look for each other, find each other and then create (social) groups and networks which are anything but multicultural. It’s strange – especially here, where we’re all gathered together, from Canadians to Chileans, Norwegians to South Africans and Australians to Russians. This is a place where people have the opportunity to show that a multicultural society really can work. But most people don’t. It’s not just whole neighbourhoods that are formed on the basis of homogenous nationalities – universities and workplaces are defined by interest groups who align themselves in terms of ethnic origin, religion or nationality. Why Do we just not want to get to know each other Hilary Swank once said, “I pray for the day when we not only accept our differences but we actually celebrate our diversity.” How can we do that if we fail to communicate with each other Going back to my earlier point, maybe we don’t actually have anything to say to each other. But why do we remain silent Because it’s difficult Because we’re wary of what we don’t know Why None of the responses we received could answer that question for me. Not a single one. Interestingly, some of the Europeans sent their responses in different languages, whereas the American submissions were all in English. What does that mean That Europeans have thought about the fact that people all over the world might not understand their mother tongue And if so, why do Americans think that people all over the world understand English Do we understand each other at all – and do we want to This is a question which we must perhaps ask ourselves: are we scared by the transnational trends of the 21 st century or do we need more time to get used to barriers being opened And if so, do we even want to get used to this The Transnational is a magazine which puts culturally diverse poetry into the limelight, focussing on political or sociocritical poetry that transcends national borders. So our remit is global – extending across cultures. But is that even possible Are we about to open our borders and grow closer only to stand opposite each other in the end and have nothing to say: absolutely NOTHING – nothing was the most common response to our question. Do we really have nothing to say to each other Globalisation is not something that’s about to happen: it’s something that’s happening right now … so what are we going to do when we’re forced to talk to each other for longer than 20 seconds Have fun with the first edition of the Transnational, Sarah Katharina Kayß (editor | Herausgeberin) 7
