This is a work in progress. If I waited until it was complete, it would never be printed. Please make any corrections to
my errors and omissions. Facts have been collected from many different sources and can be wrong, so please check them
carefully. I am interested in any stories or photos you may have on any of the listed family members. My goal is to
compile a complete family picture of these individuals, not just names and dates.
Thank you everyone who contributed to our family history.
Ellison Family History
Joseph Ellison
Ireland in the mid 1800’s was marked by oppression from Protestant landlords, pauper Irish
tenants who could not support their large families, political unrest, and plots of rebellion against
the British rule. This agricultural country was the poorest in the Western world. The average
peasant lived in a one-room windowless, cabin with no chimney. Penal laws were written
designed to degrade the Catholic majority. Catholic Irish could not vote, hold office, own land,
attend school, possess a weapon or practice religion. In fact, The Catholic church had been
outlawed for 140 years by the time Joseph Ellison was born in 1824 in Northern Ireland. By 1835,
The British 'Poor Enquiry' survey revealed that 75 percent of Irish laborers were without any
regular work and that begging was very common. This was only the beginning, as the eve of the
great Potato Famine was approaching.
Ireland is in your hands, in your power. If you do not save her, she cannot save herself.
I solemnly call upon you to recollect that I predict with the sincerest conviction that a
quarter of her population will perish unless you come to her relief. Daniel O'Connell to the
British House of Commons, 1847.
During the Famine, an estimated half-million Irish were evicted from their cottages. One method
used, was for the landlord to simply pay to send pauper families overseas to British North
America. Landlords would first make phony promises of money, food and clothing, then pack the
half-naked people in overcrowded British sailing ships, poorly built and often un-seaworthy, that
became known as coffin ships. The first coffin ships headed for Quebec, Canada. The three
thousand mile journey, depending on winds and the captain's skill, could take from 40 days to
three months. Upon arrival in the Saint Lawrence River, the ships were supposed to be inspected
for disease and any sick passengers removed to quarantine facilities on Grosse Isle, a small island.
Grosse-Île, a small island lying about 30 miles east of Quebec city, is Canada's poignant and
visible link with Ireland's Great Famine of 1845 -1849. In 1832 this little island in the Saint
Lawrence River, resting mid channel and about 30 miles down river from the entrance to Quebec,
was designated as a quarantine stop-over for European immigrants to the New World. A cholera
epidemic threatened North America because of the large numbers of European immigrants
arriving with cholera and the quarantine island was seen as a means of containing this dreaded
disease and preventing its spread. Little did the authorities of the day foresee the tragedy which
was to unfold and visit its shores later that year and again in 1847.
For those who sailed in 1847, their voyage usually took over 60 days to arrive on Canadian
shores. For many, however, the ravishes of fever had left them barely alive. The cholera epidemic
had taken 5 years to travel from India via Moscow to the United Kingdom where it developed as
a real problem in late1831. The numbers of immigrants arriving on Canadian shores were
increasing almost twofold from 1831 and the risks of an epidemic heightened with each arriving
ship as they were overcrowded and poorly equipped. The European passengers were a lucrative
cargo for the ship owners who had lost the African Slave trade and now saw this as a means of
filling cargo bays on the outward journey for Canadian timber. By 1832 the numbers of sick
passengers were at an alarming, uncontrollable rate and space on the island was insufficient to
4
Ellison Family History
and up to mid June alone over 25,000 people had landed in Quebec City. By Summer's end of
1832 it was reported that 51,422 emigrants had entered the colony. Almost 3,300 deaths were
reported in Quebec City by the end of September with more than that figure taking place on
Grosse-Île. By 1833 the numbers of sick immigrants had dwindled and the intervening years up to
1847 remained relatively quiet on Grosse-Île. However, 1832 was only a foretaste of what was to
come as emigration continued from the 'Old World' to the New.
The United States was traditionally the route for Irish emigrants but in 1847 America enforced an
increase in the cost of passage to the US and ship confiscations for overloaded vessels. This
opened new routes into the States via Canada as ship owners sought the cheaper option for their
human cargo.
The Canadian authorities had been watching the rise in European emigrants and were somewhat
prepared for an increase in numbers in that year. What they weren't prepared for was the numbers
of cholera and typhus victims who would require their medical aid on arrival. Neither did they
realize the very poor condition of the passengers and the numbers who had died at sea or on ship
before disembarking. Grosse-Île. Became the resting place of 6,000 immigrant Irish; who had fled
their own county only to die on the shores of Canada.
The desperate state of Irish economy made it difficult for a large family to support and provide for
the future of their children. The Ellison clan found themselves in this state; which prompted Mrs.
Ellison to send her young son on a ship bound for Canada. Joseph Ellison was scarcely 12 years
old, when his mother packed his few clothes in a bag and, placing a “book to live by” in his
hands, she put him on a ship; knowing that she would never see him again. The year was about
1837; and for those who stayed in Ireland, their fate would be hunger and disease. The potato
famine struck mysteriously in September of 1846 and lasted six years. More than one million died
in three years of the blight, as a result of malnutrition and disease. Two million refugees would
flee Ireland in the hopes of finding life in a foreign country. Mrs. Ellison’s two oldest sons had
earlier immigrated to Canada and Joseph was instructed to meet them once he arrived in port. She
also had brothers who worked on the ships, taking comfort in the fact that Joseph would get
some attention on the voyage. Her only hope was that her youngest to travel to the new world,
would remember his upbringing: “to be honest and unafraid.”
Between 1815 and 1845, nearly a million Irish, including a large number of unemployed
Catholics, came to the United States. The men went to work providing the backbreaking labor
needed to build canals, roads and railways in the rapidly expanding country. Irish pick-and-shovel
workers proved to be very hard-working and were in great demand. American contractors often
placed advertisements in newspapers in Dublin, Cork and Belfast before beginning big
construction projects. The massive Erie Canal project, for example, was built by scores of
Irishmen working from dawn till dusk for a dollar-a-day, hand-digging their way 363 miles
westward through the rugged wilderness of upstate New York.
Joseph made his way to the Province of Ontario. Most immigrants came to Canada by way of the
Saint Lawrence River which divides Canada from the United States all the way to the Great
Lakes. It is assumed that Joseph would have continued his voyage, after his mandatory quarantine
at Grosse Isle, down the Saint Lawrence, past Montreal and into Lake Ontario; which separates
5

New York from Ontario Province. It is here that the Lower Peninsula of Ontario extends south;
surrounded by the United States, with Lake Huron, and Lake Ontario which feeds Lake Erie
through Niagara Falls. From here, Joseph would have to travel west, across the peninsula by land
where records have him living on the Georgian Bay. One source has Joseph living in and around
Clarkton and Sault Saint Marie on the edge of Lake Michigan. Other sources place him in nearby
Grey District, Collingwood Township, in the villages of Thornbury and Clarksburg. Joseph
married Canadian, Mary Cummings about 1857. Mary was born July 1831 in Canada to a
Scotsman by the name of Mr. J. Cummings and a Canadian born mother who’s maiden name was
McDonald. Mary was Protestant and belonged to the Presbyterian Church, while Joseph
belonged to the Anglican Church of England. “Although their churches were only a couple blocks
apart; they each attended their own church, even after their marriage.” Together they had eight
children, born in Canada; of the eight, only six survived to make the journey west: Mary
Elizabeth, James, Robert, David, Albert, and Norman.
Hearing much of the wealth, and rapid development of the Puget Sound region, Joseph knew
there would be better opportunities for his children than were to be obtained in their native place.
It is said that a severe storm took the roof off the Ellison’s home, prompting them to finally
migrate to the Pacific Northwest, where their oldest son, James, worked in the logging camps in
Washington. By 1872 the continental railroad had reached San Francisco. Selling their property
and packing their belongings, the Ellisons boarded the train from Chicago headed for San
Francisco. From California, the Ellisons took a steam ship to Seattle. Their trip not yet complete;
all the furniture and baggage was put onto a smaller boat as they continued to the very southern
most tip of Puget Sound. These small supply boats were known as "Mosquito Fleets." They were
small and swallow and could run halfway up onto the landings. According to Norman Ellison and
told to Robert’s granddaughter Diane, James met the family at Hardscrabble Hill on the upper
arm of Oyster Bay with a borrowed team and wagon; they set to packing the wagon and wearily
continued towards their new home in the Kamilche Valley. Mary's brother, William Cummings
and his wife Harriet Amanda and seven children, homesteaded nearby. In later years, Tony Ellison
would remember the "ol’ Cummings’ place" with a clearing and a home near the old nut tree.
Joseph homesteaded a wooded acreage across the Simpson railroad track. His first homestead
was a log cabin with stone chimney. The remnants of a standing chimney still remain to this day
on land that is now owned by McDonald. Joseph would swap land with his neighbor, Moody.
The Kelly’s lived on the down the road, while the _______squatted on the land between
Moody’s Place and the Ellisons. A group of Chinese, who had come in with the railroad laborers,
laying the tracks that, would replace the timber skids, lived in a shanty by the swatters. That very
year, Joseph filed his first papers with the intent to become a citizen of the United States,
renouncing his allegiance to Queen Victoria. The railroad, which ended at the bay in the old town
of Kamilche, and the hotel, cut through the Ellison’s land. In later years, Albert would clear land
used for the road to Kamilche. It is along this same path that the Kamilche highway runs today;
cutting a line between the Ellisons and the o’l Cummings’ place, where there remains a single nut
tree.
Mary Elizabeth Ellison was born October 13, 1859 in Thornbury, Ontario, Canada. She married
Francis Carr of England, September 20, 1878 in Thornbury, Collingwood Township, Ontario.
Frank was the son of John and Mary Carr of England and at the time of his marriage, he was 26
parents. Frank and Mary had six children; four would survive to adulthood, Halley, Ernest,
Harold, Roy, and twins Lela and Lloyd. Harold would marry the daughter of pioneer George
Gibbs. Stella would die at the age of nineteen; just barely married; she had contracted
tuberculosis and was too weak to recover from the difficult child birth. She left behind a young
husband and baby girl. Harold would become the mail carrier for Kamilche. Lloyd would die in
France during WWI in 1918, leaving a young widow, Jean. Lela would marry, Samuel Ball who
was nineteen years her senior and was the foreman for the Wishkah boom on the Wishkah River,
on which Robert Ellison would die. Francis Carr, who preceded his wife in death April 12, 1941,
is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Tacoma. Mary died July 24, 1942 and is buried beside
him.
With in a year of the family reuniting, James Ellison, died November 1, 1885 after a piece of
metal from his ax pierced his lungs. He was 17. He is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in
Tacoma, Washington
Robert William was born October 3, 1862 in Angier, Grey District, in the Province of Ontario,
Canada. He married the divorced Marie Bothila Matthiessen, drawing the scorn of his family. She
had a son, Herbert Patterson, whom he adopted and raised as his own. Robert purchased a home
in the Little Skookum Valley, on the Wishka River, spreading himself thin financially. The
mortgage was more than he could make, forcing him to accept employment from Sam Ball,
working a job on the boom on the Wishka River. Robert and Marie had two children together,
Robert Jr. and Russell; their infant daughter was still born. Tragedy hit when Robert fell in the
Wishka River while working on a log boon nearby. Failing to return home at the usual hour a
search was made. All that was found was his hat and, his body was never recovered. He was 48
and left behind a wife and three young boys; his youngest son was only one. His widow, faced
with for-closure, fought the rest of her life to keep her home.
David Matthew was born January 5, 1865 in Clarksburg, Ontario, Canada. He married Annie
Simmons in 1890, the daughter of the original pioneer; Michael Troutman Simmons who was the
first white man to homestead what is now Thurston County. David started the Ellison Oyster
Company which he and his grown sons would operate. Together David and Annie would have
four children, Herbert, Joseph, Ray, and Minnie. David also owned a very successful farm in Mud
Bay, and died August 22, 1946. Annie would die January 7, 1967. Both are buried in the Odd
Fellows Cemetery in Tacoma.
Albert Cunningham Ellison was born December 10, 1869 in Ontario, Canada. He married the
widow, Mina Antoinette Nordrum Johnson January 22, 1910, at the age of 41. He bought land
next to his father, Joseph, and ran a dairy farm. Nettie had a young daughter, Alma from her first
marriage to John Johnson. Together, Albert and Nettie had three children, Verna, Anton and
Angus who were twins. Verna would die in a sanatorium for tuberculosis in 1943, having never
married. Albert died August 16, 1950. Nettie would not follow until February 1972 at the age of
99.
Joseph died October 28, 1911 at age 81. Mary died two years later, February 4, 1913. Both are
Ellison Family History
Albert Cunningham Ellison
Albert was born to Joseph Ellison and Mary Cummings in Canada on December 10, 1869, in Ontario, Canada. He
was the second youngest born of eight children, Mary, James, Robert, David and Norman. Two siblings remain unknown
as they died early and in Canada. At the age of eleven, Albert, along with his family, traveled to San Fransisco to meet
with his older brother James. His older sister and her husband were to follow as soon as arrangements could be made.
Albert worked as a skidder in the logging camps with his brother saving money to buy land in Kamilche for a dairy farm.
His father, Joseph, homestead on neighboring land.
Early Kamilche required discipline and hard work, women were scarce, and the logging camps dominated the
landscape. A traveling circuit-preacher made his stop in Kamilche. During these infrequent visits, a service would be
held and marriages would be preformed. Young Albert's favorite leisure past-time was dancing at the local grange.
Annie Marie Krise, a local Skawkson Indian, was also a great dancer, and a fine woman. She caught Albert's eye; and
they went out with each other a few times. Albert did not marry her, since he believed that she would not make a good
farmer's wife. Albert's shanty was primitve and work; never ending; and he would wait until he was forty to marry. Annie
proved him wrong, marrying David Henry Whitener and raising five children on her farm in Kamilche. Annie's son, Don,
would later marry Albert's daughter-in-law's twin sister.
Though the story has been lost, what remains is that Albert heard of a widow, who lived with her brothers in Maple
Valley. Albert hitched up his team and traveled to Seattle, where it is said that they were married, January 22, 1910.
The widows name was Mina Antonette Johnson. Nettie had traveled west to live with her brothers after the fatal
shooting of her first husband, John Chrisitan Johnson. Together with her young daughter, Alma; she left Spring Valley,
Wisconsin to live with her three bachelor brothers, who needed a cook, she was 37. She was born in Wisconsin, to
Norweigian immigrants, John and Elizabeth Nordrum on October 25, 1873 with her twin brother, Anton. Nettie played
in a band with her brothers and two cousins, Minnie Emerson, and Larry Olsen. They played for audiences in bars and
dance halls, which may have been how she first met Albert. It is doubtful that this couple had much of a courtship. As
with many unions in the west, this one may have been out of necessity.
Once married, Albert, his new wife, along with his step-daughter, moved into his log home on the dairy farm. A year
later, a daughter, Verna, was born. Nettie was 41 years old when she gave birth to twin boys, Anton and Angus, in 1914.
Albert believed farming was the only reliable vocation - land meant everything to him - pulled his sons out of school in
the eighth grade to work along side him. Albert had survived the Great Depression because of his farm and it's continual
food source; he would say that farming would never go away since, "Everyone needs their bread to eat." The boys worked
hard one time even killing a horse, it was pressed so hard. Anton loved to hunt and would hunt game in the vast woods
around his home. Hired hands always lived with the family so Nettie and Verna worked from sun-up to sun-down
preparing meals and keeping home. Their home was small and primitive. They fetched their water from a nearby spring
carrying it back to their wash basins. There was no electricity. It wasn't until 1936, when his sons were in their teens,
that he built a two-story farm house, turning their old home into a chicken shed.
Albert was not a man who cared for frivolities, but his sons became more vocal about their need for a better home;
they were embarrassed by their living conditions. As Albert now housed three teenagers, this home must have been
crowded. Albert retired in 1936, and begun building the new home. With the help of a hired hand, they hand dug the
basement and built a two story home, complete with an attic and basement. The hired help was paid, $6.00 a day, plus
meals. Angus was first put on the job with the help, but the hired man proved difficult to work with. After hearing too
many complaints, Albert pulled his son off the job and put Anton to work. The plumbing was a drainage ditch that was
dug to meet the nearby stream and popular swimming hole. Cedar boards ran the length of the ditch to cover the hole,
eventually, so did the vegetation. Their home was heated with a wood furnace in the basement. The basement also
housed the laundry facility. Later, an electric clothes wringer was set beside the basement door, with a clothes line right
outside, for easy access.
Albert died at age 80, August 16, 1950. His sons took over the farm, dividing the land between themselves. Nettie
continued to live in her home, with her son, Anton and his wife until her death in 1972. She died at home, in her bed at
the age of 99. Both are buried in the Shelton cemetery.
Ellison Family History
William Donald Cummings
William Donald Cummings was born in Peel County, Ontario, Canada; probably the town of Derry West. Donald was
born to a Scotsman, by the name of James Cummings and Canadian born mother, Mary McDonald in June of 1837. His
only other known relative is Mary Cummings, who married Joseph Ellison. This family is listed as Canadian
Presbyterian in the Ontario Census Index for 1871 and of Scottish descent.
William met and married Harriet Amanda Grafton in Toronto, Peel County, Ontario, Canada on December 19, 1861.
Henrietta was born in Canada in 1841 to Thomas and Huldah Grafton. She went by the name Amanda, or Manda.
Together they had seven children, Maggie Melissa, Fred W., Emma E., Milton Edgar, Elizabeth Hulda, who was called
Holly, Herbert Wesley, and Wilbur.
William and his family came west with the Ellisons and file a homestead claim on neighboring land. Their land sits
vacant just across the highway from Albert Ellison's old home, which now belongs Gary and Marolyn Matson.
Mason County Journal, May 16, 1902 has the following obituary for William:
William Cummings Dies at Olympia
Died at Olympia, Tuesday, May 18th, William Cummings, of pneumonia, aged about 64 years. The funeral took place
in that city, Thursday attended by many relatives and friends from Mason County. Mr. Cummings was sick but a short
time, being taken down while attending his son, Herbert, who was recently injured on the Blakely Railroad, and was at
the hospital. Mr. Cummings was a native of Canada, and came to Mason County in 1883, settling in the Little Skookum
Valley, which has ever since been the home of himself and family, until last summer, when their house was burned and
the family moved to Olympia. Deceased leaves an aged wife, and the following grown children: Mrs. William Callow,
of Charleston; Mrs. C.S. Brumbaugh, of Shelton; Mrs. Hulda Schneider, of Olympia, and sons Herbert, Milton and
Wilbur. Mrs. Joseph Ellison, of Kamilche, is a sister. Mr Cummings was a good citizen, highly esteemed by his old
friends in the south end of the county for his many good traits of character.
After William's death in 1902, his widow moved in with her daughter Elizabeth Hulda - Holly. She died in 1916 and is
buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Tacoma, Washington beside her husband.
The Cumming's oldest daughter, Maggie was a dress maker and married William Callow; for whom the Callow school
was named for. William was the son of Edward Callow of the Castletown, Isle of Man, England.
Emma Cummings married, Clermont S. Brumbaugh; and lived her life in Shelton.
Fred never married; Holly married, C.A. Conrad; and Herbert married, Alma Mary Weaver.
Although the Cummings were pioneers in Mason County; I still know very little of what became of their descendants
after the house fire scattered them through out Washington.
