All Aboard
As we scan the front page of our morning
newspaper, the headlines tell us about the war
on terrorism, the race for the White House, or
that the long arm of the law has arrested some
individual committing an unthinkable act.
On a Friday morning in late May, however,
the residents of the tri-city area of Prescott,
Arizona were greeted with the headlines “All
Aboard”, along with a photograph of an
NTRAK module displaying an authentic reproduction
of the nearby city of Flagstaff,
Arizona. As the story unfolds, it tells about
the Prescott Valley Military Service Monument
fund raising event where the NTRAK of
Prescott Valley displayed their NTRAK
modular layout. This was not the first time
that the club of NTRAK of Prescott Valley
was asked to promote a fund raising event.
They have been doing this for the last five
years. From raising funds for the victims of
Hurricane Katrina, Christmas Tree lighting
ceremonies, Senior Citizens Centers, and the
Veterans Administration hospital, to the
present fund raiser. They are a very respected
group with NTRAK modules that many consider
works of “art”. When the club was
asked to promote a fund raising event for the
Military Service Monument, they were more
than happy to perform what they do best; to
promote a show that many will be talking
about long after the last module was packed
away for storage.
Corrections for the
September/October issue.
The descriptions of some of the Derby Express
modules in the Sept/Oct issue had several
errors that have been pointed out to me. At
the top of page 19 is a module that was actually
part of another layout. It was attributed to Tex
N Rails, which is a train shop. The club is Tex-
N Modular Railroad Club. Thanks Hans-
Joichen Trost for the correction.
At the bottom of page 26 is a mountainous
scene credited to Roman Urbanski, He wrote
that it wasn’t his and then Marc Sisk wrote that
he had built the module in 1999-2000 and
then sold it in 2006 to Dale Rinker of the No.
Va. NTRAK club.
The modules on page 14 are from the Ann
Arbor Rail N-Trak. Fabian Beltran built the
module at top of page and 4’ modules on either
side. They are used as a set, The bottom photo
is owned by John Brock, club president. The
fascia isn’t removable, but there is access to
the track from under the module.
The modules on page 32 are not by Hank
Ellett, but no one else claimed them.
My apologies to all who didn’t get proper
credit for their work.
Car Auction News
Only three members placed bids on cars last
time. However, they bought a total of 30 cars,
so it was worthwhile. For this issue I am just
going to let interested persons ask for a list of
the currently available cars. This list will include
12 cars that were spoken for in the first
auction, but never paid for.
To get the list, send me an e-mail and I will
return an attached pdf file of the list. If that is
a problem with your computer, ask for the list
as part of the body of the e-mail.
E-mail: ntrak@tcsn.net.
Or send a letter to Jim FitzGerald, 1150
Wine Country Place, Templeton, CA 93465
and ask for the list and I will mail it back to
you.
The cars will all be priced 40% off the
original box price. There will be no auction
bidding. When I receive a list I will put whatever
cars on your list, that are still on hand,
aside for you. I will let you know the total cost
and when you make payment by check/MO/
or PayPal, I will ship you the cars.
My thanks to all who have bought cars. The
money all goes to support NTRAK, Inc. a non
The Nn3 Symposium at the NNGC
September 10-13 was the 28th annual gathering
of “the best of the best”…the National
Narrow Gauge Convention – this year in Portland,
Oregon. Those of you who have attended
this multi-scale/multi-national model railroading
event know this attracts the very best modelers
and the very best models in all scales from
around the world. This year, the “icing on the
cake” was a full-day “Nn3 Symposium” held at
Marshall Thomson’s house in Cathlamet, Washington
– the world headquarters of Republic
Locomotive Works – the largest supplier of
Nn3 models and modeling supplies in the world.
More than 20 Nn3 modelers made the hourand-fifteen-minute
trek up the Columbia River
to Marshall’s riverside home in the woods on
the banks of the Columbia River.
The day started with a breakfast buffet of
rolls, fruit and coffee. Clinics started promptly
at 9 AM. (Marshall ain't a top construction
manager for nuthin'!) After the morning's series
of clinics (list later in this report) and some
excellent sandwiches for lunch, the group took
a short break and visited the Stella, Washington,
History Museum just down the road -
opened especially for our group. Then Marshall
herded us all back to his garage/shop building
for more clinics. The day’s clinics included:
• Scenery construction - Gregg Cudworth
• Assembling the Westside 15 three-truck
Shay - Tom Knapp
• Sound & Light Animation - Mark Langezaal
and Bruce Hunt
• Layout Planning using 3D-PlanIt - Rick
Blanchard
• Narrow-gauging the Con Cor Goose - Roy
Stevens
• Building the RLW Auto-indexing Turntable
- Bruce Hunt
• GHQ Locomotive Kits - Greg Scott
• Discussion of future Nn3 chassis development
– all
During breaks between the clinics we were
able to wander through RLW's production shop
and "showroom" to see how Marshall's products
are produced, his large stock, and his
Page 6
award-winning Nn3 layout. After the day's
formal program was over, the Thomson's
hosted all of us to a “Happy Hour” and then a
fabulous dinner of fresh salmon cooked by the
host himself served on a long table sitting on the
lawn with a view of the sun setting over the
Columbia River (although I must admit my
attention was focused on the fish and fine wine
we had to wash it down.)
Tom Knapp explains key sub-assemblies
in building the Nn3 kit for West Side Lumber
Company three-truck Shay No. 15. A closeup
video camera projected images on a screen
in the clinic room.
Roy Steven’s clinic describing how to narrow-gauge
the ConCor “galloping goose”. (The
subject model was then auctioned off during
dinner.)
Bruce Hunt describing the assembly of the
RLW computerized auto-indexing turntable
kit. (Watch for a standard gauge bridge deck
for this in the future.)
Attendees get up close to the Nn3 locomotives
of Gregg Scott – owner of GHQ. Foreground
right taking a photo is Mark Langazaal,
who came all the way from Holland for the
Symposium. Standing in the back-left is Rick
Blanchard who demonstrated layout planning
using 3d-Plan-it to the group.
Marshall also arranged for a
tour of Dependable Pattern
Works in Portland, hosted by
his son, Ryan, who works
there. We were able to see
several “Rapid Prototyping”
machines in action. These create
intricate 3D patterns in
plastic from computer input
(CAD.) The mind boggles at
the possibilities!
Photographs taken by Phil Scandura
NTRAK of Prescott Valley was established
by Larry and Mary Beth Davis in 2001, after
attending a train show in El Paso, Texas where
the NTRAK club of El Paso was displaying
their club’s modules. Shortly afterwards, their
first module was created and was part of the
Pacific Coast NMRA regional meet in
Redding, California. After a warm welcome
and response, Larry and Mary Beth knew they
wanted to be involved with the NTRAK organization.
Next, they were on their way to the
NMRA convention in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida;
N-Scale Collectors meets in San Diego and
Denver. They also attended train shows around
Arizona, in Tucson and the Phoenix areas. In
2006 the club was asked to be part of the first
Winslow Railroad Days, along with the Tucson
NTRAK club. The show was so much of
a success that NTRAK of Prescott Valley was
invited back to be part of the Winslow Christmas
Parade. Now after the successful Winslow
events, Tucson NTRAK has taken responsibility
for the Winslow Railroad Days. The
club continues to focus on events in the Prescott
area, where as many as 7000 visitors view
their modules each year. Most of the viewers
attend their shows to see what new modules
the club has built, as the club has a reputation
of building museum quality modules. The
club has won Best of Show and First Place
ribbons at the Yavapai County Fair and their
modules were published in July /August 2005
N-Scale magazine.
With only four members and twenty-two
modules, NTRAK of Prescott Valley may be
small in size but big in stature. All of the
club’s modules are reproductions of cities or
Page 10
Module called “Folkston”, a typical small town.
The Mount Rushmore, Presidential Monument.
landmarks across the country, giving the viewers
something they can identify with either
living, visiting, or knowing of the places that
were recreated in miniature. Larry has the
ideas, builds the benchwork and the buildings
(many of which are scratch-built or kitbashed),
and then turns the project over to the scenery
experts, Mary Beth and Dianne Matthews, to
complete the backdrop and the scenic portions
of the modules. Larry is not the “pat on the
back type of person” and gives credit to the
Tucson NTRAK membership with special
considerations to Stewart Draper, Gary Copus,
Jim Jones, John Scott, Paul Wiley, and Patrick
Lorenz for their contributions on ideas and
advice.
Larry Davis has always been a train enthusiast
and modeler. From an early age to the
present, he has turned to model railroading for
recreation and relaxation. After a life threatening
and altering heart attack in 1999, he has
turned to NTRAK for therapeutic reasons.
His blood sugar is low and he is a Diabetic, yet
the worries of health issues are not a concern
when he is building modules. He will always
be a part of NTRAK “no matter what happens”,
as Larry has stated in the past when his
physical conditions attempt to get the best of
him. We have to emphasize “attempt” because
when it comes to Railfanning or
NTRAK, nothing will keep the man down.
As we reflect back to the headlines and front
page story on the morning of May 31, 2008 of
the Daily Courier about the fund raising event
for building a monument to honor our veterans
of past, present, and future, we realize that
from the “Shot heard around the world” at
Bunker Hill, to the countless campaigns and
wars that our American Veterans have fought,
there are only two identities that have given
their lives for us, Jesus Christ died for our soul
and the American Serviceman died for our
freedom. On the last days of May in 2008, the
NTRAK of Prescott Valley was very proud to
be able to have raised funds for a Military
Service Monument to honor our veterans.
Jim’s Note:
Larry has built twenty two 4’ modules on his
own to the scenery stage, Then his wife and
her friend swing into action with the scenery
and details. Their layout is now 10’ x 36’. It
makes a great showing, but can be operated
with two people when it is setup. Between
shows, some modules are setup in a small
layout and the rest are boxed.
When it is time for a show, a rental truck is
used for the job. Three other area modelers
have joined with them and have built, or are
building additional modules. Larry will be
coordinating the NTRAK Layout at the
Winslow, AZ Railroad Days, April 23-26,
2009. For more information:
The Happy T-TRAK Modelers.
Other very interesting programs are the work of Ms. Carroll Welch, the Deputy
Director who organizes and supervises a Tradition of the Summer camps, ”Hobo
Stew”. Carroll and her volunteers prepare and cook the beef, bread and vegetables.
The vegetables are grown, in the museum gardens, except for potatoes and corn.
Then young modelers harvest, clean and cut them up for a squash casserole.
THE KNOXVILLE AREA MODEL RAILROADER CLUB
Club photo
Twelve club members assist with the Program. Some members are
shown teaching a class. In the last newsletter issue, it was noted that
the T-TRAK idea of modeling has been very beneficial allowing the
club to teach everything they want to teach about model railroading
and modules.
The children enjoy the experience and can’t wait to come back, again.
You can see how deeply interested they are --- Teachers and Students.
The T-TRAK Youth Modelers are awarded T-TRAK Certificates and
T-TRAK Patches, as well.
Train Cupcakes are baked then decorated by the children. This
special meal is served to the parents, on the last day of camp. They
see what the children have done and Camp Certificates are awarded.
