SUMMARY:!<br />
This!course!surveys!major!historical!developments!in!post!Confederation!Canada.!It!also!involves!analysis!<br />
of!how!interpretations!of!the!past!have!evolved!over!time.!In!particular,!this!course!considers!the!<br />
advantages!<strong>and</strong>!disadvantages!of!history!focused!on!prominent!individuals!(<strong>and</strong>!particularly!those!<br />
prominent!through!political!or!military!exploits)!as!compared!to!history!oriented!to!social!groups.!!<br />

OBJECTIVES:!!<br />
1. to!analyze!key!events!in!the!post!Confederation!history!of!Canada!<br />
2. to!expose!students!to!a!range!of!materials!used!by!historians!in!reconstructing!the!past!<br />
3. to!enable!students!to!participate!in!both!the!analysis!<strong>and</strong>!the!construction!of!historical!knowledge,!<br />
individually!<strong>and</strong>!within!groups!!<br />

POLICY!ON!LATE!ASSIGNMENTS:!<br />
Late assignments will be docked a penalty of 10% for the first day, <strong>and</strong> a further 3% for each day after<br />
that, weekends included. Assignments are due at or prior to the beginning of class on the due date. I am<br />
willing to grant extensions provided the extension is requested in person (not over the phone or by<br />
email), prior to the due date, <strong>and</strong> is adequately justified OR a doctor’s note (or a note from another<br />
suitable authority) accompanies an extension request made on or after the due date.<br />
