ORDINANCES FOR MASTERS DEGREE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION<br />
(MBA)<br />
1. The University shall undertake the <strong>in</strong>structions <strong>for</strong> Master’s Degree <strong>in</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
Adm<strong>in</strong>istration. The duration of the Course shall be two <strong>ac</strong>ademic years. E<strong>ac</strong>h<br />
year shall be divided <strong>in</strong>to two semesters. The duration of e<strong>ac</strong>h semester will be<br />
18 - 20 weeks ( 90 te<strong>ac</strong>h<strong>in</strong>g days ).<br />
2. The admission to this course will be based on merit <strong>in</strong> an entrance test to be<br />
conducted by Punjab Technical University, provided the candidate is otherwise<br />
eligible <strong>for</strong> admission.<br />
3. The eligibility <strong>for</strong> admission to MBA course shall be as follows :<br />
All those candidates who have the m<strong>in</strong>imum qualification of B<strong>ac</strong>helor's Degree<br />
recognized by Association of Indian Universities with a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 50 % marks<br />
<strong>in</strong> the aggregate.<br />
4. There shall be University exam<strong>in</strong>ation at the end of e<strong>ac</strong>h semester. The<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>for</strong> the first and third semesters shall ord<strong>in</strong>arily be held <strong>in</strong> the month<br />
of December and <strong>for</strong> the second and fourth semesters <strong>in</strong> the month of May or on<br />
such dates as may be fixed by the University.<br />
5. Every candidate shall be exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the subjects <strong>ac</strong>cord<strong>in</strong>g to the syllabi and<br />
course outl<strong>in</strong>es prescribed from time to time.<br />
6. E<strong>ac</strong>h paper shall be of 100 marks, out of which the candidate shall be exam<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
<strong>for</strong> 60 marks on the basis of external paper sett<strong>in</strong>g & evaluation. Rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 40<br />
marks <strong>in</strong> e<strong>ac</strong>h paper, exclud<strong>in</strong>g project report sem<strong>in</strong>ars and pr<strong>ac</strong>ticals, shall be<br />
assigned to <strong>in</strong>ternal assessment. It will be based on the per<strong>for</strong>mance of the<br />
students <strong>in</strong> house tests, take home assignments and class participation etc..<br />
However, evaluation of the candidates <strong>in</strong> a Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Report, Project Report,<br />
Sem<strong>in</strong>ar and viva voce shall be out of 100 marks.<br />
7. The first semester exam<strong>in</strong>ation shall be open to a regular<br />
student who :<br />

has been on the rolls of the Institution dur<strong>in</strong>g the first semester, and<br />
has attended not less than 75% of the lectures, sem<strong>in</strong>ars and case<br />
discussions etc.<br />
bears a good moral char<strong>ac</strong>ter.<br />
8. The second, third and fourth semester exam<strong>in</strong>ations shall be open to a regular<br />
student who :-<br />
(i)<br />

has been on the rolls of the Institution dur<strong>in</strong>g these semester as the case<br />
may be<br />
has attended not less than 75% of lectures, sem<strong>in</strong>ars and case<br />
discussions etc.<br />
has passed the previous semester exam<strong>in</strong>ation respectively or is covered<br />
under Re appear regulations.
9. Attendance shall be counted upto seven days prior to the date of commencement<br />
of the University<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />
10. The Head of the Institution may condone shortage <strong>in</strong> attendance <strong>in</strong> e<strong>ac</strong>h subject<br />
to the extent of 10% of the total lectures delivered with recorded reasons.<br />
11. There shall be no reappear <strong>in</strong> the sessional / <strong>in</strong>ternal assessment of Theory and<br />
Pr<strong>ac</strong>tical subjects. The marks obta<strong>in</strong>ed by the students <strong>in</strong> sessionals / <strong>in</strong>ternal<br />
assessment <strong>in</strong> both Theory and external Pr<strong>ac</strong>tical exam<strong>in</strong>ations shall be added<br />
as such to the marks obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> written Theory and External Pr<strong>ac</strong>tical<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ations respectively.<br />
12. The students will have to obta<strong>in</strong> the m<strong>in</strong>imum marks required to pass the subject<br />
as per the regulations.<br />
6. The external exam<strong>in</strong>ers <strong>for</strong> the Pr<strong>ac</strong>tical exam<strong>in</strong>ations shall be appo<strong>in</strong>ted by the<br />
University and the presence of an external exam<strong>in</strong>er to conduct the Pr<strong>ac</strong>tical<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation shall be required.<br />
14. There shall be a comprehensive viva-voce of the candidates after e<strong>ac</strong>h<br />
semester, which will be conducted by a committee consist<strong>in</strong>g of the Head of the<br />
Institute, one external and one <strong>in</strong>ternal exam<strong>in</strong>er nom<strong>in</strong>ated by the Head of the<br />
Institute.<br />
15. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g report submitted by the candidate after completion of his/ her tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
an <strong>in</strong>dustry shall be evaluated <strong>in</strong>ternally by one or more te<strong>ac</strong>hers nom<strong>in</strong>ated by<br />
the Head of the Institute. It shall carry 100% marks.<br />
16. E<strong>ac</strong>h student shall submit the Project Report to the Head of the Department /<br />
Institution with<strong>in</strong> 15 days of the last exam<strong>in</strong>ation of the fourth semester.<br />
17. The Project Report of the candidate shall be exam<strong>in</strong>ed by an external exam<strong>in</strong>er<br />
to be appo<strong>in</strong>ted by the University.<br />
18. The medium of <strong>in</strong>struction shall be English.<br />
19. A student who fails <strong>in</strong> the sessionals of a subject shall not be<br />
allowed to appear <strong>in</strong> the University Theory Exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> the same subject.<br />
20. The m<strong>in</strong>imum marks to pass the exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> e<strong>ac</strong>h semester<br />
shall be :-<br />
(i)<br />

40% <strong>in</strong> e<strong>ac</strong>h paper <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g viva-voce and sem<strong>in</strong>ar<br />
50% <strong>in</strong> the aggregate.<br />
21. A candidate shall be eligible <strong>for</strong> the award of a prize or a medal, if<br />
(a) he / she passes the MBA course <strong>in</strong> two years, and<br />
(b) has passed all the subjects <strong>in</strong> the first attempt available to him / her.
22. The Internal assessment awards of a candidate who fails <strong>in</strong> the external<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation shall be carried <strong>for</strong>ward to the next exam<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />
23. In the detailed marks card the marks secured by the candidate <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal<br />
assessment and external exam<strong>in</strong>ation will be shown separately.<br />
24. The successful candidate shall be classified on the basis of<br />
aggregate <strong>in</strong> first, second, third and fourth semesters <strong>in</strong>to follow<strong>in</strong>g divisions :<br />
(i) Those who obta<strong>in</strong> 70% or more of the total aggregate marks - First<br />
Division with Honours<br />
(ii) Those who obta<strong>in</strong> 60% or more but less than 70 % of<br />
the total aggregate marks - First Division<br />
(iii) Those who obta<strong>in</strong> 50% ore more but less than 60%<br />
of the total aggregate marks - Second Division<br />
25. As soon possible after the completion of the exam<strong>in</strong>ation, the University shall<br />
publish a list of successful candidates.<br />
26. A candidate is required to pass <strong>in</strong> all the courses prescribed <strong>in</strong> a semester <strong>in</strong><br />
Internal Assessment & University exam<strong>in</strong>ation separately by secur<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>imum<br />
prescribed marks <strong>in</strong> a course & <strong>in</strong> the aggregate as prescribed <strong>in</strong> the regulations.<br />
However, if a candidate fails to secure required marks <strong>in</strong> a course or <strong>in</strong> the<br />
aggregate, he/ she shall be allowed to reappear <strong>ac</strong>cord<strong>in</strong>g to the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
regulations :<br />
(i)<br />
A candidate deta<strong>in</strong>ed from appear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> end semester exam<strong>in</strong>ation of a<br />
subject(s) due to shortage of attendance will retake the course of study<br />
when the subject(s) are offered as a regular course <strong>in</strong> the subsequent<br />
semester.<br />
(ii) Those candidates who obta<strong>in</strong> less than 40% marks <strong>in</strong> University<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> any of the course shall be pl<strong>ac</strong>ed under reappear. They<br />
may appear <strong>in</strong> the University exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> the reappear course <strong>in</strong> the<br />
subsequent semester when the exam<strong>in</strong>ation of this course is held.<br />

In case a candidate is able to pass the course but fails to atta<strong>in</strong> the<br />
aggregate of 50% at the end of the course, he/she will be given a chance<br />
to atta<strong>in</strong> the required aggregate by reappear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the University<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> the subject/ subjects of his/ her choice at the time the<br />
subject/ subjects are be<strong>in</strong>g offered next.<br />
A candidate who has been pl<strong>ac</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> reappear because of University<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation / viva/voce shall be allowed to study <strong>for</strong> next semester<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation & shall be permitted to appear <strong>in</strong> the failed papers of the<br />
previous exam<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>in</strong> the subsequent exam<strong>in</strong>ations which shall be<br />
held along with the papers of the higher exam<strong>in</strong>ation, subject to the<br />
conditions that <strong>for</strong> promotion <strong>in</strong> the third semester at least 50% courses of<br />
first & second semesters should be clear.<br />
A total of three years ( six semesters ) from the date of admission shall be<br />
given to a candidate to pass all the courses, after which the candidature
of the candidate shall be cancelled. A maximum of three chances<br />
(<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the regular chance) shall be given <strong>for</strong> clear<strong>in</strong>g a course of any<br />
semester.<br />
Amendment 1(Approved <strong>in</strong> 9 th Academic Council Meet<strong>in</strong>g)<br />
9.4b Amendment of<br />
Rule 13 (f,g) of<br />
8 th Academic<br />
Council<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g amendment <strong>in</strong> rule 8.13 (f-g) suggested by Pr<strong>in</strong>cipals <strong>in</strong> their<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g held on 24 th April, 2002 and approved by the Vice-Chancellor was<br />
ratified by the Academic Council<br />
(i) A student will be required to pass separately <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal /<br />
sessional and external papers.<br />
(ii) This will be implemented from 1 st semester students admitted<br />
<strong>in</strong> session July, 2001<br />
(iii) The result of 1 st semester conducted <strong>in</strong> Dec – 2001 may be<br />
revised <strong>ac</strong>cord<strong>in</strong>gly.<br />
Amendment 2(Approved <strong>in</strong> 9 th Academic Council Meet<strong>in</strong>g)<br />
9.14 To consider<br />
award<strong>in</strong>g gr<strong>ac</strong>e<br />
marks to<br />
students<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g rule <strong>for</strong> the award of gr<strong>ac</strong>e marks to the students was<br />
approved by the Council :<br />
“One percent of the total marks of theory exam<strong>in</strong>ation of all the semesters<br />
may be given <strong>for</strong> improv<strong>in</strong>g the division of a candidate. Gr<strong>ac</strong>e marks given<br />
to a candidate <strong>in</strong> semester exam<strong>in</strong>ation may be deducted from total gr<strong>ac</strong>e<br />
marks to be given <strong>for</strong> improvement of the division.”<br />
Amendment 3(Approved <strong>in</strong> 11 th Academic Council Meet<strong>in</strong>g)<br />
11.4 M<strong>in</strong>utes of the emergent<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g of the Stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Committee<br />
At the time of tak<strong>in</strong>g up the m<strong>in</strong>utes of emergent meet<strong>in</strong>g, the Vice-<br />
Chancellor observed that these were not been approved by him as<br />
<strong>in</strong> the note from Director (Colleges) and had sought a number of<br />
clarifications.<br />
The Academic Council considered the m<strong>in</strong>utes of the emergent<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g of the Stand<strong>in</strong>g Committee held on 14.03.03 and decided<br />
as under :<br />
Item No. 1 To confirm the m<strong>in</strong>utes of the 1 St meet<strong>in</strong>g of the stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
committee held on13.02.03<br />
(i) The Academic Council noted that m<strong>in</strong>utes of the 1 st<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g of the stand<strong>in</strong>g committee were confirmed.<br />
(ii) The <strong>ac</strong>ademic Council also noted the marks <strong>for</strong><br />
attendance <strong>for</strong> management courses. However, so far<br />
as MSTs <strong>for</strong> various discipl<strong>in</strong>es are concerned, it was<br />
decided as under:<br />
There will be three MSTs <strong>for</strong> B.Tech courses, two MSTs <strong>for</strong><br />
management and Cpmputer Application courses and m<strong>in</strong>imum<br />
one MSTs <strong>for</strong> Pharm<strong>ac</strong>y and B.Sc (MIT) course <strong>in</strong> e<strong>ac</strong>h<br />
semester. The Academic Council after not<strong>in</strong>g various views<br />
further decided as under:

attendance <strong>in</strong> scheduled<br />
lectures of 60 m<strong>in</strong>utes e<strong>ac</strong>h and<br />
not based on lectures held.<br />
Registrar <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med the members that data of students<br />
attendance asked from the colleges was not complete <strong>in</strong><br />
respect of some <strong>in</strong>stitutes. Analysis of the data showed<br />
that attendance eligibility criteria used was based on the<br />
number of lectures held and a few colleges had not<br />
<strong>for</strong>warded the required <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation. As per the<br />
regulations attendance <strong>in</strong> e<strong>ac</strong>h subject must be m<strong>in</strong>imum<br />
75% of the lectures scheduled. Further these lectures<br />
are supposed to be of 60 m<strong>in</strong>utes duration. Hence<br />
students who do not atta<strong>in</strong> the prescribed attendance<br />
level <strong>in</strong> terms of 75% of the scheduled lectures are<br />
required to be deta<strong>in</strong>ed. He further <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med the council<br />
of its own decision where<strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum number of lectures<br />
conducted <strong>in</strong> a subject is 10 N (where N is number of<br />
lecture hours scheduled per week) (the same applies to<br />
tutorials and pr<strong>ac</strong>tical labs. also). The Chairman<br />
Internal assessment be left to the colleges.<br />
Pharm<strong>ac</strong>y Courses:<br />
A lot of discussions were held regard<strong>in</strong>g the runn<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
pharm<strong>ac</strong>y course, keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> view the problem be<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>ac</strong>ed by<br />
the students, the Academic Council decided as under:<br />
The pass percentage <strong>for</strong> e<strong>ac</strong>h course <strong>in</strong> Pharm<strong>ac</strong>y may be 40%.<br />
Distribution of Internal and External marks may be 40:60 on the<br />
pattern of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Courses. However, this is subject to the<br />
approval to the concerned bodies i.e. AICTE and Pharm<strong>ac</strong>y<br />
Council of India.

their implementation. It was decided to constitute<br />
committees of pr<strong>in</strong>cipals <strong>in</strong> e<strong>ac</strong>h stream to consolidate all<br />
the exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>ac</strong>ademic regulations and procedures with<br />
reference of source and applicable data etc. The<br />
committees would also suggest changes to be<br />
considered <strong>for</strong> the future. The Vice Chancellor was<br />
authorized to <strong>for</strong>m the committee.<br />

26.3 To brief on the decisions<br />
taken on the 23 rd<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g of the BOG<br />
The Board of Governors, PTU <strong>in</strong> its 23 rd meet<strong>in</strong>g deliberated the<br />
proceed<strong>in</strong>gs and recommendations of the Academic Council. The<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g were taken by the BOG :<br />
(A) Amendment to Academic Regulations 2001 / 2004<br />
The Board approved the recommendations of the Academic<br />
Council on medications to the Academic Regulations – 2004<br />
perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to exam<strong>in</strong>ation and attendance. The<br />
recommendations of the Council were also made applicable<br />
to the students governed by Academic Council Regulations –<br />
2001.<br />
Further the BOG implemented the changes prospectively and<br />
not with retrospective effect. Consequently Academic<br />
Regulations – 2004 Para 6.1 and 6.2 stand repealed and<br />
repl<strong>ac</strong>ed by the follow<strong>in</strong>g :<br />
6.1 Exam<strong>in</strong>ation : any bonafide student, subject to<br />
provisions of regulation 3.2 and 6.2, who appears <strong>for</strong> the<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation conducted by the University, shall be promoted<br />
to the next higher semester and shall carry <strong>for</strong>ward, all<br />
course(s) <strong>in</strong> which he / she is declared fail. The student shall<br />
have to pass all papers with<strong>in</strong> the stipulated maximum<br />
duration to qualify <strong>for</strong> the award of University <strong>degree</strong>.<br />
The same shall be applicable, mutatis mutandis to students<br />
governed by Academic Regulations 2001 <strong>in</strong> super session of<br />
relevant provisions there<strong>in</strong>.<br />
6.2 Attendance<br />
(a)<br />
Student deta<strong>in</strong>ed, due to shortage of<br />
attendance, <strong>in</strong> any subject, shall have to repeat the<br />
course and then only appear <strong>in</strong> the concerned subject,<br />
wherever it is offered as a regular course. However, if<br />
a student is short <strong>in</strong> attendance <strong>in</strong> all the course offered<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g a semester, he / she shall be required to repeat<br />
the semester, alongwith the next batch of students.<br />
(b)<br />
A student absent consecutively, without<br />
any notice or <strong>in</strong>timation, <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g to the concerned<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal / Director, <strong>for</strong> more than 45 days<br />
consecutively <strong>in</strong> a semester shall be deemed to have<br />
withdrawn from the course and his / her enrolment shall<br />
stand cancelled. Save the amendments proposed<br />
there<strong>in</strong> above, all other provisions of Academic<br />
Regulations 2004 / 2001 shall rema<strong>in</strong> unchanged.
The above shall be applicable, mutais mutandis, to students<br />
governed by Academic Regulations 2001 <strong>in</strong> super session of<br />
relevant provisions there<strong>in</strong>.<br />
The above shall be applicable, mutatis mutandis, to students<br />

relevant provisions there<strong>in</strong>. The modified Academic Regulations –<br />
2004 as applicable to Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g are pl<strong>ac</strong>ed at Appendix –C.<br />
These shall be mutatis mutandis, applied to all undergraduate and<br />
MBA / M.Sc./ MBA course.<br />
The members of the Academic Council are <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med <strong>ac</strong>cord<strong>in</strong>gly.<br />
Any clarifications of ambiguity must be brought to the notice of the<br />
University <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> 90 days of implementation of these<br />
provisions. The University alone shall be the competent authority<br />
to issue any clarifications to remove any doubts or hardship to any<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividuals or group of students enrolled <strong>in</strong> the University.<br />
(B)<br />
Exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> the latest syllabus<br />
The Board did not approve conduct of exam<strong>in</strong>ation as per the latest<br />
revised curriculum <strong>in</strong> respect of students who had failed to clear the<br />
subject. The Board referred the case to the Academic Council with<br />
the follow<strong>in</strong>g recommendations :<br />
(a)<br />
To study the pattern be<strong>in</strong>g followed by the other<br />
Universities particularly technical universities <strong>for</strong> similar<br />
courses.<br />
(b)<br />
To set multiple copies of papers <strong>for</strong> e<strong>ac</strong>h set of<br />
syllabus and to use these question papers as question paper<br />
bank.<br />
(C)<br />
Amendment to Chapter XVI of the regulations<br />
relat<strong>in</strong>g to use of unfair means <strong>in</strong> or <strong>in</strong> relation to<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />
The Board approved the amendment as proposed. It was<br />
decided that the amendment must be given a vide publicity<br />
and cautionary notice must be displayed at appropriate pl<strong>ac</strong>es<br />
<strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>stitute / exam hall. The amendment approved is as<br />
appended below :<br />
10 (z)” (i) Carriage of mobile or other means of electronics<br />
communication <strong>in</strong>side the exam<strong>in</strong>ation hall (even <strong>in</strong> off<br />
condition) :<br />
(ii) Communicat<strong>in</strong>g or typ<strong>in</strong>g to communicate, by any means<br />
whatsoever, through electronic media or otherwise with any<br />
other person <strong>in</strong> a manner that it <strong>in</strong>dicative of help be<strong>in</strong>g sought<br />
/ given <strong>in</strong> an exam<strong>in</strong>ation”.
