GOLDENDALE, WASHINGTON JULY 11, 2012 — 3
HOMETOWN
Chamber of Commerce
is alive and active in
the local community
“The Chamber of Commerce
really doesn’t do anything,
they just pass out flyers”
was a comment overheard
the other day. “The
Chamber” generally refers to
the 10 board members and
the executive director, not the
180 plus members who belong
to the Chamber. So what does
happen at “the Chamber”
Three board members are
very active in the Mid Columbia
Economic Development
District and travel
many miles at
their own expense,
for the singular
purpose of seeking
out ways to improve
the economy
and bring businesses
to our area.
Two board members
are always
visible in the community,
gathering information, asking
questions, supporting the
businesses, and attending the
many events and activities
going on. Another board
member spends hours seeking
out and securing quality
speakers for the weekly community
forum lunches,
which is not an easy task. A
couple more of the board
members can be seen multitasking,
planting and watering
flowers, attending forum
lunches, cleaning up unsightly
areas around town, donating
additional time to research
and committees
which are engaged in meeting
community needs.
There’s a board member committed
to the youth of the
community, another who,
with camera in hand, documents
activities in Goldendale
and surrounding areas.
The pictures from that camera
offer excellent marketing
material. Another board
member oversees the marketing
and advertising, knowing
the importance of advertising
the area. And all of the
board members donate
countless hours creating
quality events like the Home
and Garden Show, Blue Grass
Festival, and Community
Days.
The Executive Director
runs around tying up all the
loose ends from the scurry of
activity created by the dedicated
Board of Directors, coordinating
Town Hall meetings,
marketing, meeting and
greeting the visitors who
come to town, serving as an
ambassador of the Goldendale
and the surrounding
area.
Watch for the addition of
the Goldendale Chamber Ambassadors.
That new leg is
growing strong and rapidly,
having already served in two
customer appreciation business
events, welcomed the
opening of a new restaurant,
and recognized the anniversary
of a business in town.
And there is more to do. We
are always looking for new
members. And yes, we publish
and distribute flyers, too.
The Greater Goldendale
Area Chamber of Commerce
is a member of the Columbia
River Gorge Visitors Association
(CRGVA). The Association
recently sponsored a
Chamber
Chat
Earlene
Sullivan
tourism feasibility study, the
purpose being to analyze how
we can bring more tourism
dollars to the area. The results
of that study were presented
at a recent meeting
held in Cascade Locks.
The study revealed some
great strengths for promoting
more tourism dollars, some
of which were natural beauty,
museums and interpretive
centers, agri-tourism, technology,
adventure, historical
and cultural traditions.
Weaknesses
or areas for improvement:
lack of
visitor rest areas,
very few highway
turn-outs for photography,
poor
highway direction
signage for visitors,
the number of
Gorge area stores and shops
which are closed on Sunday.
The study also suggested
some real opportunities; expand
the festivals, bicycle
rentals and equipment; soft
adventure rentals; niche markets;
and international marketing.
A copy of the presentation
has been requested and will
be made available to all who
are interested as soon as we
receive it at the chamber office.
The 2012 Community Days
and Show-N-Shine Car Show
participation was excellent
this year. The celebration
dates back about 40 years
when two very community
minded ladies, Alma Anderson
and Frances Allyn wanted
to do something to create
harmony between the town
people and city people. The
idea was so successful, it is
still going on today.
And, there is considerable
“unity” required to bring the
events together. Klickitat
PUD volunteered their bucket
truck which provided an
excellent photo shoot location.
Instrumental in this
project were Jeff Thayer,
PUD Operations Manager,
journey linemen Ephan
Wanous, Travis Heilman and
Bema Thayer. Sentinel editor
and publisher Lou Marzeles
loaned his camera to the linemen
to shoot the parade, and
the flash mob dance on Court
Street. The time and effort of
all these individuals is greatly
appreciated. (Non- certified
linemen are not allowed
in the bucket truck)
The Jaycees did an excellent
job getting the parade in
line, one of the biggest ever.
The County provided additional
equipment for electrical
service, and Allied Waste
provided a dumpster. The
Community Days Committee
was on the court house lawn
at 6 a.m. to greet the vendors
and assist with their set up.
All for a great, annual family
community event, community
unity at work 40 years ago
and still working.
from a stroke and
Alzheimer’s Disease.
Voncille (Von)
Columbia High School in
1959. During her senior
of her school day was spent
plugging the cords into the
switchboard, making long
distance calls for patrons,
and blowing the noon whistle,
which was a toggle
switch on the side of the
two whistles and the switchboard
would light up with
calls from people wanting to
know where the fire was.
After graduation, she
worked full time for the telephone
and their square
dancing, they
made friends
with many people
in Goldendale.
After retiring,
Ron and Von
moved to Moyie
Springs, Idaho to
enjoy the outdoors.
They also
found a new
square dancing
group of friends
and enjoyed traveling
