We welcome you to professional learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education!<br />

<strong>Additional</strong> <strong>Qualification</strong>s programs and our other services strive to link current research and best practice<br />

in meaningful ways to you in your roles in school districts in Ontario.<br />

Our instructors are top-notch and we are proud of Bob Barton, who, in June 2007, was a recipient of an OISE<br />

award of excellence for teaching in Continuing Education.<br />

We are sharpening “our focus” in the development of new courses which provide a special focus in a given area of the course guideline.<br />

Now being offered:<br />

• Reading Part Two and Three with a focus on Coaching and Mentoring of particular interest to those in literacy coaching roles,<br />

associate teachers and mentors of new teachers in school districts.<br />

• Primary Education Part One and Junior Education Part One with a focus on Differentiated Instruction useful for offering<br />

instructional and assessment strategies for injecting more precision and personalization into the curriculum.<br />

• Junior and Intermediate Education Part One with a focus on assessment and evaluation will support good practices related to the<br />

teaching- assessing cycle.<br />

• Environmental Science for elementary educators.<br />

• Study abroad! Religious Education Part One, Two or Three in Israel in partnership with the University of St. Michaels’ College in<br />

U of T.<br />

• Boys’ Literacy Achievement action research projects are in year three with one hundred and three projects underway around the<br />

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS<br />

<strong>Additional</strong> <strong>Qualification</strong> courses consist of 125 hours of work as defined by regulation and accredited by the Ontario College of<br />

Teachers. The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession and the Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession are infused in all<br />

courses.<br />

Applicants should note that <strong>Additional</strong> <strong>Qualification</strong> courses are not considered for degree credit at the University of Toronto.<br />

DOMESTIC $875.00 INTERNATIONAL $3200.00<br />

If applicants are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents, they are required to pay the International Student<br />

Fee unless they can claim exemption and substantiate it with documentary evidence.<br />

PAYMENT OF TUITION FEE<br />

Applicants using the AQ OAS to apply online (https://aqoas.oise.utoronto.ca) pay with VISA or MasterCard. If applying by mail or in<br />

person, payment is also accepted by certified cheque, money order or debit card (in person only).<br />

Applications will not be processed without the required tuition fee payment. Please note that OISE is not responsible for any<br />

interest charges incurred on credit card payments for <strong>Additional</strong> <strong>Qualification</strong> course fees. A processing fee may be charged for<br />

withdrawals that occur prior to the start of classes. Fees quoted above are subject to change by the Governing Council of the<br />

ABOUT ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION COURSES<br />

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION (AQ) courses can qualify teachers to teach in another division or subject, as well as help them to improve<br />

skills in their current teaching.<br />

AQ courses come in two types: <strong>Additional</strong> Basic <strong>Qualification</strong>s (ABQ) and <strong>Additional</strong> <strong>Qualification</strong>s (AQ).<br />

• <strong>Additional</strong> Basic <strong>Qualification</strong> courses allow teachers to change or add to what they are already qualified to teach. ABQ courses can be<br />

Primary, Junior, Intermediate, Senior, or Technological Studies.<br />

• <strong>Additional</strong> <strong>Qualification</strong> courses allow teachers to expand their skills within the divisions or subjects that they are already qualified<br />

to teach. Some <strong>Additional</strong> <strong>Qualification</strong> courses allow teachers to add new qualifications (Guidance, Special Education, etc.). AQ<br />

courses can be One Session, Three Session, or Honour Specialist (Subject Area or Technological Studies).<br />

• Principal’s <strong>Qualification</strong> Program (PQP) courses are particular <strong>Additional</strong> <strong>Qualification</strong> courses that qualify teachers to assume<br />

principals’ duties. The PQP consists of Parts 1 and 2 (each 125 hours), and a 60-hour practicum at the end of Part 1. For details about<br />

admission requirements and the courses themselves please see the PQP section of the Web site, www.oise utoronto.ca/aq/pqp.<br />

CANDIDATE RESPONSIBILITY<br />

<strong>Additional</strong> <strong>Qualification</strong> (AQ) courses are governed by the Ontario College of Teachers Act, Ontario Regulation 184/97 –<br />

www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/DBLaws/Regs/English/970184_e.htm - and as such admission requirements for AQ courses at OISE cannot be<br />

altered or waived. To ensure successful application, registration and course completion, applicants are responsible for ensuring they have<br />

the required prerequisites and have read the course and registration information available on our Web site at:<br />

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION COURSE LOCATIONS<br />

In-class courses are offered at various schools in the Greater Toronto Area Toronto. Some courses are offered in the OISE buildings at<br />

ONTARIO COLLEGE OF TEACHERS INTERNATIONALLY EDUCATED STUDENTS<br />

Teachers seeking Ontario teaching certification who have been directed by the Ontario College of Teachers to take professional courses at<br />

a faculty of education may apply for admission as “Internationally Educated Students”. Internationally Educated Students are required<br />

to register in person and attend an Orientation Session. Specific dates and times of the Internationally Educated Student Orientation<br />

1) A photocopy of your current Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> or Interim Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> showing<br />

proof that an acceptable university degree has been conferred.<br />

2) Official transcript(s) showing proof of successful completion of a minimum of two full university degree credit courses or the<br />

equivalent in the teaching subject.<br />

THREE SESSION ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS<br />

Prerequisites for Part 1:<br />

1) A photocopy of your current Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> or Interim Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong>.<br />

2) Evidence of a basic qualification in one of: the Primary Division, the Junior Division, the Intermediate Division or the<br />

Senior Division in general studies is required in order to take courses in Accounting, Computer Science, Data Processing, Dramatic<br />

Arts, Entrepreneurship Studies, Family Studies, French as a Second Language, Junior Education, Librarianship, Marketing,<br />

Mathematics (P/J), Physical and Health Education (P/J and I/S), Primary Education, Reading, or Science (P/J).<br />

Prerequisites for Part 2:<br />

1) A photocopy of your current Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> showing successful completion of Part 1 or<br />

the equivalent of the three-session qualification.<br />

2) Evidence of at least one (1) year of successful teaching experience in Ontario certified by the appropriate Supervisory Officer or<br />

proof of at least one (1) year of successful teaching experience outside Ontario certified by the appropriate Supervisory Officer on<br />

the OISE Certification of Teaching Experience Form available at:<br />

Prerequisites for Part 3:<br />

1) A photocopy of your current Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> showing successful completion of Part 1 and<br />

Part 2 or the equivalent of the three-session qualification.<br />

2) Evidence of at least two (2) years of successful teaching experience, including one (1) year of experience in Ontario in the<br />

subject in which the qualification is being sought. This experience must be certified by the appropriate Supervisory Officer on the<br />

OISE Certification of Teaching Experience Form available at: http://www.oise.utoronto.ca/aq/registration/forms.html#forms.<br />

NOTES:<br />

- Part 1 courses do not give you a division. Please see the Primary, Junior, Intermediate and/ Senior Basic <strong>Qualification</strong> courses for a<br />

division.<br />

- Technological Studies teachers are eligible to take the following three session qualification courses: Computers in the Classroom,<br />

Co-operative Education, Design and Technology, English as a Second Language, Guidance, Media, Music-Vocal P/J, Music-<br />

Instrumental, Special Education, Visual Arts.<br />

HONOUR SPECIALIST ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS<br />

Prerequisites:<br />

1) A photocopy of your current Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> showing a basic qualification in one of: the<br />

Primary Division, the Junior Division, the Intermediate Division or the Senior Division in general studies.<br />

2) Official university transcript(s) showing proof an acceptable academic university degree conferred by an accredited institution,<br />

acceptable to the University of Toronto and the Ontario College of Teachers, with a minimum of 20 full university degree credit<br />

courses or the equivalent. <strong>Courses</strong> required for teaching certification or additional teaching qualifications cannot be used for<br />

this requirement.<br />

3) Official university transcript(s) showing one of the following:<br />

a. For a single Honour Specialist, proof of successful completion of 9 full university degree credit courses or the equivalent in the<br />

subject in which the Honour Specialist qualification is being sought with an overall average of at least a “B” or “70%”.<br />

b. For a combined Honour Specialist, proof of successful completion of 14 full university degree credit courses or the equivalent<br />

in the 2 subjects in which the combined Honour Specialist qualification is being sought, including no fewer than 6 full university<br />

degree credit courses or the equivalent in each subject. The 14 full courses must, together, have an overall average of at least a<br />

“B” or “70%”. Both of the Honour Specialist courses in the combination must be successfully completed before the qualification<br />

will be recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers to be added to the Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong>.<br />

c. For two separate single Honour Specialist qualifications in two subjects, of the 20 full university degree credit courses or the<br />

equivalent, applicants must have 9 full university degree credit courses in each of the two subjects in which the Honour<br />

Specialist <strong>Qualification</strong>s are being sought. Each set of 9 full university degree credit courses must have an overall average of at<br />

least a “B” or “70%”. <strong>Courses</strong>, which have been previously used for admission to an Honour Specialist course, cannot be used for<br />

admission to any other Honour Specialist course.<br />

4) Evidence of at least two (2) years of successful teaching experience, including one (1) year of experience in Ontario in the<br />

subject in which the qualification is being sought. This experience must be certified by the appropriate Supervisory Officer on the<br />

OISE Certification of Teaching Experience Form available at: http://www.oise.utoronto.ca/aq/registration/forms.html#forms.<br />

For a combined Honour Specialist, proof of teaching experience is required in only one of the areas and the Honour Specialist<br />

course in that subject must be completed first. Applicants who have applied for a single Honour Specialist but who do not meet<br />

the prerequisites may also be considered for a combined Honour Specialist. It is OISE’s practice to process an application for one<br />

of the combined subjects, and to advise the applicant accordingly.<br />

TECHNOLOGICAL STUDIES BASIC QUALIFICATIONS<br />

Prerequisites:<br />

For applicants who already have Technological Studies listed on their Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong>:<br />

1) A photocopy of your current Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> or Interim Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong>. This<br />

Certificate must have an entry in a Basic Technological Studies subject.<br />

For applicants who DO NOT have Technological Studies listed on their Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong>, the<br />

prerequisites are detailed in the Technological Studies Information Booklet which is available at:<br />

www.oise.utoronto.ca/aq/download/TechBooklet-06.pdf. Applicants are responsible for reading the Technological Studies<br />

Information Booklet and for ensuring they have met the admission requirements stated in the Booklet before applying.<br />

TECHNOLOGICAL STUDIES ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS<br />

Prerequisites:<br />

1) A photocopy of your current Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> or Interim Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong><br />

showing proof of a basic level qualification in the same subject.<br />

2) Provide proof of one year of work experience or education or a combination of education and business or industrial<br />

experience in the area of intended qualification.<br />

3) Proof of a relevant two or three-year diploma or the equivalent from a College of Applied Arts and Technology or Polytechnic<br />

Institute or University, or the relevant MTCU trade Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> (C of Q), accompanied by the examination details<br />

showing at least 70% (B) standing.<br />

TECHNOLOGICAL STUDIES HONOUR SPECIALIST<br />

Prerequisites:<br />

1) A photocopy of your current Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> or Interim Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> showing<br />

one of the following:<br />

- Three Basic Technological Studies qualifications plus one at the Advanced level. The entry at the Advanced level must correspond<br />

to one of the Basic Technological Studies qualifications (a total of four additional qualifications).<br />

- Four Basic Technological Studies qualifications and a three-part (Specialist) qualification.<br />

Note: Design and Technology or Industrial Arts, Part 1 or Computer Studies - Computer Technology may be used as one Basic<br />

entry.<br />

2) Evidence of at least two years of successful teaching experience, including one year of experience in Ontario in Technological<br />

Studies. This experience must be certified by the appropriate Supervisory Officer on the OISE Certification of Teaching Experience<br />

Form.<br />

3) Official transcripts showing proof of successful completion of one of the following:<br />

- Grade 13 or 6 OACs.<br />

- Five full university degree credit courses. <strong>Courses</strong> credited towards teaching certification or additional teaching qualifications<br />

cannot be used for this requirement.<br />

- One year of full-time study at a C.A.A.T. which required a Secondary School Graduation Diploma for admission.<br />

PRINCIPAL’S QUALIFICATIONS PROGRAM<br />

Prerequisites for PQP Part 1:<br />

1) A photocopy of your current Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> showing basic qualifications in three (3)<br />

divisions (including an Intermediate Basic divisional qualification).<br />

2) Official university transcript(s) showing that an acceptable university degree has been conferred.<br />

3) Evidence of one of the following:<br />

a. Successful completion of an acceptable Master’s or Doctorate degree.<br />

b. Two (2) Three Session Specialist or Honour Specialist <strong>Additional</strong> <strong>Qualification</strong>s.<br />

c. One (1) Three Session Specialist or Honour Specialist <strong>Additional</strong> <strong>Qualification</strong> and an official transcript showing successful<br />

completion of at least half the number of courses required to qualify for an acceptable Master’s degree from an accredited<br />

university. Since graduate programs vary in course requirements and duration, a letter from the University confirming that you<br />

have successfully completed at least half the number of courses to qualify for an acceptable Master’s degree is also required.<br />

4) Evidence of at least five (5) years of successful teaching experience as certified by an appropriate Supervisory Officer on the<br />

Principal’s <strong>Qualification</strong> Program Certification of Teaching Experience Form available on our Web site:<br />

Prerequisites for PQP Part 2:<br />

1) A photocopy of your current Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of <strong>Qualification</strong> showing successful completion of the<br />

Principals’ <strong>Qualification</strong> Program<br />

At OISE, the Principals’ <strong>Qualification</strong> Program – Parts 1 and 2 – are based on two key elements:<br />

• It is a challenging program which is provincially approved and academically rich. The program offers<br />

small study groups facilitated by exemplary elementary and secondary school principals who represent<br />

both the Catholic and Public School Boards in Ontario.<br />

• The OISE PQP links candidates to current research, research analyses and best practices for meaningful<br />

school improvement while creating Ontario-wide collegial networks for the future. The PQP embodies<br />

the thinking of world-renowned educators such as Michael Fullan, Kenneth Leithwood, Blair Mascall,<br />

Steven Katz and Lorna Earl, among others. Candidates can enroll in the Principals’ <strong>Qualification</strong><br />

Program through the Continuing Education Office at OISE.<br />

Format: Partially Online - Program consists of online interaction over a two-week period along with 10<br />

days of in-class instruction.<br />

PQP Summer Session 2008:<br />

• The summer session will be held as a partially online program from June 11 – July 16, 2008 as follows:<br />

Online Portion: June 11 – July 2 (excluding July 1) and<br />
