Silvia's Message
The 2009-2010 school year was filled with
so many highlighted accomplishments!
First and foremost, our graduating
class of 2010 was well-received by a
respectable list of middle schools of
choice. We opened our doors to a third
section of Senior Kindergartners, and St.
Stephen's graduated its largest group of
students, Senior Kindergartners, Fifth Graders and Sixth
Graders. And if these aren't large enough charges, we also
prepared for our FCIS/FKC 5 year successful accreditation
visit and completed our newest educational facility, the
new Main Highway Pavilion.
I must say, all of these initiatives were taken on with
great enthusiasm and determination by a remarkable
community of leaders. It is no miracle that St. Stephen's
continues to be a place where children "Think, Love and
Grow," in a spirit of love, care and warmth.

so proud of our school! So much
has been accomplished this past
year with the construction of the
Main Highway Pavilion and the
continued striving for excellence in
all aspects of the education offered
at SSEDS. This has been, as the
yearbook noted, a year of “traditions
and transitions” with the ending of sixth grade, the
introduction of an additional senior kindergarten
section, and of course all the excitement generated
by the new construction.
We are all eagerly anticipating the grand opening
on the first day of the 2010-2011 school year!
Church members are delighted with the new twostory
structure the construction has provided for the
church. I know the entire parish also shares my
gratitude to our School and Home Association for
providing the funding for a badly needed upgrade
to our sound system as well as seed money for the
church’s 100th anniversary celebration. We truly
are one community who support and sustain each
other!

This June, St. Stephen's graduated
it's largest group of students ever.
The Grade 6 Graduates took the
stage on June 7, a bittersweet
celebration as we bid farewell to
the Sixth Grade program at St.
Stephen's. Amberly Nardo ('04)
spoke eloquently to the graduates
about her experience in St.
Stephen's Sixth Grade and what the
graduates had to look forward to in
the future.
On June 8, it was time to celebrate
our first group of Grade 5
Graduates. Tracey Mourning served
as graduation speaker for the
graduates. She spoke about how
important it is to recognize all that
you have and strive to help others
who are less fortunate.

The Lynne Allen Leadership Award, established in 2002 to honor the exemplary
leadership style of Lynne Allen, Head of School from 1993-2002, is voted on by the
faculty and staff. It is presented to the student who demonstrates an ability to
lead his/her peers in a positive way. The Grade 6 recipient was Niki Urquidi and the
Grade 5 recipient was Juliana Ramirez.
The Rev'd Warren Densmore Citizenship Award was established in 1978 for Rev'd
Densmore, the first Headmaster of St. Stephen's. This award, voted on by the
faculty and staff, is given to the one student who best exemplifies the qualities
desired of a St. Stephen's graduate. Kelsey Scholer was the Grade 6 recipient and
Nikolas Gies was the Grade 5 recipient.
The Rev'd Don Copeland Scholarship Award was named in 1978 in honor of Rev'd
Copeland under whose leadership our school was established and is presented to
the graduate with the highest grade point average. Kelsey Scholer received the
award in Grade 6 and Juan Rizo-Patrón received the award for Grade 5.

Senior Kindergarten Graduates
In front of a packed house, the students of Senior Kindergarten graduated on June 9. The
students processed in with their teachers, recited a poem about their year, and sang songs
to remind of us their achievements as they head on to First Grade. At the end of the
ceremony, the audience was treated to a slideshow of the year put together by the teachers.

2010-2011 Student Council Officers Elected
Each spring, elections are held for Student
Council Officer positions. Many of the students
in Grade 4 stepped up to run for office. After
a campaign week, which included videotaped
election speeches, the entire school voted
electronically. Congratulations to all of the
students who showed the courage to run for
office and to those students elected for 2010-
2011.

Grade 4 Takes Study Tour of St. Augustine
As a culmination to the yearlong study of Florida History, the students in Grade 4 took a study tour of St. Augustine. Some of
the highlights of the trip were a tour of the Castillo de San Marcos, a visit to the Mission Nombre de Dios, a climb up the St.
Augustine lighthouse, a candlelight ghost tour in the Historic District, and a sunset cruise on the Mantanzas River.

Grade 5 Explores Marine Life at SeaCamp
Each year, the students in Grade 5 experience SeaCamp, a 3-day study trip on Big Pine Key. Students snorkle on a coral
reef, swim with the sharks, dissect squid, enjoy an "algae party" and sing around a campfire. It's always one of the favorite
fieldtrips of St. Stephen's students.

Grade 3 Re-Enacts Immigration Process
After a month-long study of the history of the U.S. Immigration process, students re-enacted "coming to America" as
immigrants. Students were each assigned a country to research. They learned about the immigrants from these countries and
what prompted them to come to America. They created a character and based a book on this character, as well as portrayed the
character on Immigration Day. After passing through the various tests (medical, mental acuity, etc.) they were sworn in as U.S.
citizens. Many thanks to Mrs Booth, Mrs. Silva, Ms. Courtney and all of the parents who helped to bring history to life!
