volunteers
I am busy updating all of our volunteer files.
I have recently mailed out police check
forms and evaluations to all of our volunteers.
I have created a spreadsheet that
will help me make sure everything remains
updated, yearly. (For those of you who
know me well, it’s ok to be shocked that I
created a spreadsheet, I’m becoming SO
technological!) My goal is to have everything
updated and organized by the end of
the summer.
Please contact me if any of your information
has changed. You can call me at
519-344-2841, or
email me at kelly@reboundonline.com
This spring we have 21 volunteers helping
out in 4 programs. As always, I am blown
away by the dedication of our AMAZING
volunteers!! It is so exciting to see the positive
effect they have on the youth in our
community. I have seen countless young
people come to their program early, just to
talk to their table coaches. INCREDIBLE!
We have 3 new volunteers this session!
In our City LIFE Choices Program, we have
Shelby Villeneuve and Walter Palombo.
They are already making connections with
the youth at their tables-congratulations!!
In Petrolia, we have Laura Collins new to
our team. I understand from County Coordinator,
Mary Lou, that Laura is doing great
things and is already like an ‘old pro’!
WELCOME ABOARD
SHELBY, WALTER AND LAURA!
I am so excited to report that some of our
previous placement students from Lambton
College have returned as volunteers!
Thank you to SAFE Choices Coaches, Erin
Flanagan and Warren Fitzgerald! In the
PASS program, Shawn Johnston helps out
on Mondays! We love it when our students
come back after their placements are over
to help our kids.
NEXT ORIENTATION DATE:
TUESDAY, AUGUST 17TH FROM 6-8!!!!
As always, I am looking for new volunteers.
Please let me know of anyone who may
want to learn more about volunteer opportunities
at Rebound. You can reach me
Mondays and Tuesdays from 9am-10pm
and Wednesdays and Thursdays from
9am-4pm.
Courtyard Project
We have now been providing our programs out of the new Dow Centre
for Youth since the middle of September. We are so pleased with our new
space. We are now able to provide office space for all staff and more importantly,
we have the space we need for all of our many programs. We
are so happy to remain a part of a community centre by sharing space
with Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the St. Clair Catholic District School Board.
We are hoping over the next year to be able to expand our partnerships
with other youth serving organizations.
We were able to raise 2.7 million dollars towards this project which leaves
another $100,000.00 to raise. This last $100,000.00 will allow us to complete
the landscaping, add a community sign out front, fencing and security lighting
for the property and add youth friendly items such as basketball nets,
bike racks, green space for playing, and courtyard for restful space. If you
would like to contribute to this project, please make cheques payable to
Sarnia Community Foundation and put Dow Centre for Youth in the memo
line. You can also call Mary Ellen Warren at Rebound (344-2841) or email
her at maryellen.warren@gmail.com. There are 6 memorial trees still to be
named in the courtyard at $500.00 each.
We THANK many of you who have already
contributed to this amazing project.
We could not have done it without you!
Programs
Well folks, Spring has arrived! I wish I could say it’s warmer but…
rain, rain go away!
Attendance in the P.A.S.S Program has been consistent. Since the
Fall newsletter we have had 96 referrals, of which 88 attended.
WOW! The average length of stay has been 4 days. However, this
year we have had 2 students for 15 days, 2 students for 20 days
and 1 student for 60 days (by school year end). We are thrilled to
have been able to provide our service to these young people,
their families and schools.
The P.A.S.S program also had another successful year as a placement
for coop students from Lambton College. Warren, Shawn,
Erin, Lisa, and Sonya were a tremendous help within the program
and a true delight to mentor and supervise. The P.A.S.S program
wishes them all the very best in their future endeavors.
Overall, it has been a wonderful year in the P.A.S.S program. We
are looking forward to summer vacation to rejuvenate for what I
am sure will be an exciting 2010-2011 school year.
Parenting Program
The spring Rebound Program was facilitated by Monica & Frank Vautour and held on
Monday evenings instead of the usual Wednesday. By switching to Mondays it was convenient
for the parents of youth attending the S.A.F.E. program.
We had many lively discussions as the new format allows more opportunity for parents to share
and support each other.
A speaker from the Community Health Services addressed many health issues related to teens
and drugs and a police officer from the Sarnia Police Services answered many questions related
to teens and the law. The feedback from the parents was very positive and they expressed their
thanks at having the opportunity to speak to and learn from such local experts.
If anyone is interested in volunteering to facilitate the Rebound Parenting Program, arrangements
can be made to ‘shadow’ others and see the program in action.
County Programs
County volunteers and clients braved the winter roads and 7 clients graduated from our County
Winter 2010 Life/Safe choices program. Volunteers for the winter program: Jayne Logan (table
coach) and Beth Lucan (table/lead coach) with much appreciated help at the start from Chantelle
Steele. Due to continued declining client numbers in the Forest area, we have combined
the Forest and Petrolia programs to a single Petrolia location. This spring we have 7 clients in the
county with 4 volunteers in Petrolia: table coaches Jayne Logan, Joan Barney (welcome back
Joan!) and new volunteer Laura Collins (welcome Laura!), plus Lead coach Beth Lucan.
In the past year, presentations about our Rebound services have been made at most schools in
the county grid. We were also invited by the North Lambton Community Health Center to talk to
their after-school programs about “Bullying” in their Forest, Kettle Point and Thedford locations.
I
Cho ces
In the Winter 2010 program we had 11 youth in Life Junior and 17 youth in Life Senior. This
spring session has started off with 21 youth in our JR/SR Combo program.
We would like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to the amazing guest speakers who share their
stories with our kids. It’s amazing that a room full of 20+ kids goes completely silent as they
listen to the words of these wonderful volunteers! Thank you for giving of your time, the kids
truly appreciate it!
S T A N D
We are settling in to our new building and we are really enjoying the area set up for the STAND clients!
It is such a bonus to have an area that I can meet with kids that they feel comfortable. Some
of the issues I have been helping young people deal with recently include; anger and aggression,
bullying, self-esteem issues, family breakdown and dealing with grief.
This past winter session, I saw 8 STAND clients and 4 STAND under12 clients. So far, this spring, I have
16 STAND clients and 5 STAND under 12 clients.
There has been an increase in STAND graduates who go on to complete one of our many group
programs. It is so great to see kids who, at first come to Rebound with apprehension, soon feel comfortable
enough to ask to participate in additional programs! We’re doing something right!! Kelly
STAGE
The STAGE program continues to change to meet the needs of the females participating in the program.
Last winter 7 youth graduated and this spring session we have 8 young ladies enrolled. Popular topics of
conversation include; relational aggression, body image, media influence, self-esteem and safety issues.
The conversations we have each session continue to amaze me!! I am very proud of our strong, young
women!
jr.
STAGE
Well, Michelle and Kelly started a JR program last November with a 5-session pilot program. This
program is geared for girls aged 8-11. We worked with three young girls that Kelly had been seeing in the
STAND under 12 Program.
The 5-session pilot was such a huge success the girls demanded that we continue!! We ran a full 10-session
program and we continue to meet with the young girls on a monthly basis until the end of the school
year.
These girls have formed an excellent bond and they have done great work learning how to deal with bullying,
learning the difference between positive and negative friendships and are beginning to question
the negative media influences that surround today’s youth. We have been so impressed by these future
leaders!
STAGE
We worked with 10 grade 7 girls over a ten-week period. There were some challenges in the beginning,
Landsdowne edition
Michelle and Kelly were approached by the CYW and administration of Lansdowne Public School about
bringing the STAGE Program to their school. Never afraid to try something new, we worked the program
to fit within the school’s needs. We were very excited to bring the STAGE Program directly into a situation
that had widespread relational aggression issues.
but the program ended up having a positive impact on all the participants. They were able to learn
some skills to help them deal with each other in a constructive manner and they gained the confidence
to stand up for themselves and each other.
On our last day with the girls at Lansdowne, we could barely keep it together as we were given handmade
cards with poems and quotes on friendship written inside from each of the girls. We were invited
back to watch them perform a skits they created on friendship.
We were happy to have the opportunity to work with such a wonderful group of kids!!
Youth Justice
Well after almost a year the process involved for acceptance and swearing in of the Youth Justice
Committee has been finalized. In November 2009 Rebound held the mandatory training for
all approved committee members from the Ministry of the Attorney General. Two trained Ministry
facilitators came to Sarnia and worked with our local volunteers regarding Youth Justice Committee
practices. On February 17, 2010 and March 1, 2010 the local Crown Attorney Diane Foster
witnessed the signing of the Oath of Confidentiality and Memorandum of Understanding, all of
which has been submitted to the Ministry of the Attorney General. The continued commitment
and dedication by our Committee Members to this process is truly, truly appreciated.
Just as reminder for all Justice Committee Members, you will require an updated CPIC by June
31, 2010. You should have all received an information package in the mail and if you haven not
please contact me at the office and I will be sure to get one out as soon as possible. A reminder
that at the end of August 2010 the Memorandum of Understanding expires and Rebound will be
required to have all Justice Committee members sign documentation once again.
S.A.F.E. CHOICES
This past winter SAFE Choices served 18 participants. It meant for great discussions and learning
opportunities for all involved. We had four wonderful guest speakers take time to come and speak
with the group which is always so important and they are greatly appreciated by not only the
participants and volunteers in the program but myself as well. A new lesson was piloted in the winter
session of SAFE discussing stimulants and depressants. This is seen as a very informative addition to
the program.
F r a n c h i s e s
On April 20, 2010, we hosted a Franchise City meeting and
had a great turnout! There was representation from Kingston,
Brockville, Sault St. Marie and Kettle Point. Although it was
only a one day workshop, our collaboration was priceless.
Topics of discussion were:
Funding; Volunteer recruitment and retention
Program material; Documentation
Community partners; Parent services
Over view of the Life Skills Model
All franchises received an updated program manual, which
they were extremely grateful for. There was a lot of positive
feedback from each franchise representative and everyone
took something away from the meeting. The general consensus
is that we continue to meet on a yearly basis.
Hearts for Youth
Again I am amazed! Although we are in the midst of a recession, the community continues to support our fundraising
efforts. Even though our attendance turnout was lower than what we normally experience, our gala was
still a huge success!
I would like to extend a special thanks to Sheila Lester at To Suit Your Fancy who decorated the Dante Club
for our gala; to Rich Reinelt of Festive Ice Sculptures for graciously providing our fantastic ice bowl and to Julie
Taylor who handmade and donated the chocolate truffle table favours.
Thank you to the Dante Club, their staff and their servers for serving up such a wonderful meal yet again.
Thank you to the youth and adult speaker for having the courage to share their stories.
Thank you to DJ Mike Sumner for rocking us through the night and to KarissaTeskey for capturing the night on
film.
A very special thanks goes to Avolution Multi Media for providing and setting up all the technical equipment
needed to execute the event; to John Stevens for offering his auction expertise and to the many merchants and
community partners who generously donated both items and money to our gala, as well as those who continue
to show their support through attendance. THANK YOU!!
I would also like to give a huge round of applause to Oh Nyne, the youth band that displayed their talents during
the gala. WOW! What talent in such a young group!
Most of all, I want to thank the staff and volunteers at Rebound who work tirelessly to gather items, get table
sponsorships and make the gala a night to remember.
We have booked the Dante for the Hearts For Youth Gala 2011 on February 12th, 2011.
Hope to see you there! FYI... we take donations all year long for the Gala!
