volunteers
This fall we have 30 volunteers helping out
in 7 programs. The sessions are off to a
great success and the sound panels in the
program room are making a huge difference!
We have some new volunteers I’d like to
brag about. I am very excited to announce
that we have a new parent program facilitator
working with Jack and Dianne Fletcher
this session. Debbie Hartwick is a welcome
addition to this small team! She has lots of
experience as a mother of two terrific teenaged
daughters.
We have one new volunteer in our LIFE
Choices program this session. Chris Atkinson
is joining us on Wednesday nights and
has already proven to be quite an actor during
each week’s role plays!! He keeps us
laughing each week.
Our STAGE Junior program is very fortunate
to have two super-fantastic Junior
Coaches. Alicia Hartwick is back with us
this session and she is SO incredible with
our little girls. The increase in participants
to this program meant the need for more
coaches, so giving Alicia a hand is Moulan
Bourke. Some of you may remember her
as the beautiful, “Glinda” in our production
of The Wizard of Oz. She has helped to
2
bring a musical piece to the program. I am
so proud of Alicia and Moulan! What fabulous
role models they are for our little girls!
I am SO proud of them!!!
As always, I am looking for new volunteers.
Please let me know of anyone who may want
to learn more about volunteer opportunities
at Rebound. You can reach me Mondays
8:30am-9:30pm, Tuesdays from 8:30am-
8:00pm, Wednesdays 8:30am-6:00pm and
Thursdays from 8:30am-2:30pm. My email
is kelly@reboundonline.com.
got married to her sweetheart, William Veers. In true
and had a honeymoon and only missed one night of
program!!! You are amazing! Congratulations to you
both and we wish you many happy years together!
Welcome Andraya
Rebound would like to welcome our newest staff member
Andraya. She will be working at St. Christopher’s High School
in the in-school detention program 3 days a week, and she
will be working with the Life Choices evening programs as
well.
My husband Kevin, and I have been married for 2 1/2 years
and have 3 beautiful daughters (Hannah 7, Evangeline 3,
Chelsia 2).
I graduated the SSW program at Lambton College in 2001
and began my career in Residential. I firmly believe that
working residential isn’t a job, it’s a lifestyle and during my time there I felt so honoured being such
a consistent part of those youths lives. After being at S.T.A.R.T. for the majority of 8 years I excitedly
accepted a new job opportunity with Rebound.
I look forward to continuing my career (and growing professionally), with such a respected organization
- working with the youth of our community.
CHARITY INTELLIGENCE CANADA SELECTS REBOUND AGAIN FOR
ONE OF TOP CHARITIES IN CANADA.
A letter recently received from Charity Intelligence Canada to Sarnia Lambton Rebound contains
this message:
“After rigorous and independent analysis including due diligence, assessment of transparency and
accountability, cost efficiency, and charity results, and undergoing a Recommendation Committee
review, Charity Intelligence Canada (CI) has concluded its analysis of Canadian charities for
2010.
We would like to thank your organization for participating in this analysis. CI has made the final
selection of recommended Canadian charities delivering top results for Canadians in need. The
the recommendation of Sarnia-Lambton Rebound as a CI Recommended Charity 2010.
Sarnia-Lambton Rebound excels in addressing a social issue, is cost efficient, and most importantly,
Translation: Thank you very much!
Last June, the Dante Club chose Rebound as the recipient of one
roll myself out of the hall by the end of the night. We would like
to express our gratitude and thanks to all the hard working staff,
volunteers of the Dante Club as well as the staff and volunteers of
Rebound who baked up a storm so our patrons could enjoy dessert
after dinner.
With everyone’s help we were able to raise just over $1200.
Thank you again to all who were involved in cooking, setting up
and supporting this event.
Looking for a GUITAR HERO
My name is Nicole-Ann, but everyone calls me Nikki. I am
currently a 3rd year full time college student studying Child
and Youth worker at Lambton College. I have known I’ve
wanted to work with troubled youth since I was at least 13
years old. I was born in London, Ontario and raised in Strathroy.
I’ve wanted to have my placement at Rebound since
1st year when Michelle came in and talked to our class
about REBOUND and the services they offer to the youth. I
wanted to have my placement here because I love the
idea of having different programs offered to the youth to
bring awareness of different issues that they may be faced
with. My goal after I graduate is to move either to London
or Toronto to work in a group home or correction center for
youth.
My name is Jen Heeringa. I’m a third year co-op student
enrolled in Lambton College Child and Youth Worker program.
I’m a single mom to a beautiful little girl named Joey.
She is my reason I decided to go back to school once again.
I chose Rebound for my placement because I wanted to
break away from the “school setting” and get some fresh
ideas on how to deal with at risk youth. So far I have felt challenged
and have gained great information that will help me
professionally as a CYW or E.A. I’d recommend anyone in the
field or community that have a passion for youth to come
and volunteer. The knowledge and connections you make
are priceless!
My name is Natasha Zaranik. I am currently in my second year of the
Child and Youth program at Lambton College. I am doing my placement
at Rebound in the Life Choices Sr. program on Wednesday
nights and in the PASS program Thursdays and Fridays. I absolutely love
this placement and I am looking forward to this great experience.
My name is Jayme Scherle. I currently attend Lambton College enrolled
in second year Child and Youth work. I’m currently doing my
field placement at Sarnia – Lambton Rebound working in the SAFE
and PASS programs. I am extremely grateful for being given the opportunity
and love working with the youth.
Rebound is in the running for a $25,000 grant through the Pepsi
Refresh Project.
And we need your votes!!!!!!!
Pepsi is accepting 1,000 ideas every month that will be voted on by the public for funding.
The Refresh Project funds ideas that have a positive impact on the community.
Beginning January 1, Rebound will be in the running for funding for the expansion of the
STAGE program. And boy has STAGE shown to have a significant and positive impact to date on
our youth.
The STAGE program provides support to girls between the ages of 12-15 who demonstrated past
aggressive or violent behaviour, or were involved in aggressive relationships.
The program helps girls address the root causes behind this behaviour, builds confidence and
has successfully reduced bullying in the schools.
The expanded program would accept clients between the ages of 8 and 11, as well as open up
a separate program for boys.
Some of the topics covered in the program include relational aggression, bullying and cyberbullying,
effective communication, body image and safety.
The program has been so successful that some of the graduates have requested to return to
serve as role models and mentors to the younger client base.
The youth have reported significant improvement in areas of communication, decision-making,
their family and peer relationships, school attendance and grades, and successfully reduced
aggressive behaviour.
How can you help?
Please visit the Pepsi Refresh Project website daily and vote for Rebound.
The website can be found at www.refresheverything.ca and search for either the word
“Rebound” or “STAGE” in the search tool. You will note that Rebound’s submission also includes
a brief YouTube video.
You can vote daily. Please vote often.
We are thankful to all who take the time to help us grow and expand this amazing program that
has enjoyed such fantastic results with our youth. We see the success stories every day and
hope to build on those with this funding.
Programs
It is hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner. As of
today, there are 59 days until Christmas…YIKES!!!
The PASS Program is pleased to announce another successful start
to this school year. Attendance in the PASS Program has been
consistent with 31 referrals so far (Oct.26/2010), and we are looking
forward to the year ahead. The PASS Program continues to
strive in delivering an excellent source of support to the youth
that are suspended. We support the youth in returning to school
with their work up to date and empowered by the social skills presented
to them. The program covers topics such as goal setting,
decision-making, substance use/abuse, respect, communication
and more. We are continually researching and updating our information
so we can stay current with all our program material.
Our goal this year is to continue to put the word out there to more
schools, parents, students and the community; that the PASS Program
is available.
And last but not least the PASS Program is always looking for new
volunteers. If you are interested please call 519-344-2841.
Here’s looking forward to another great year in PASS!!
September marked the finalization for the approval and swearing in of all our Youth Justice Committee
Memebers! We are pleased to announce this completion and I would like to thank each and
every one of you for your patience and commitment to this process as it is greatly appreciated. This
past summer we have worked on developing the intake process for Youth Justice Forum participants
and we work on continuing to implement these new steps. September started off slow with referrals
for Youth Justice Forums but October has been busier so you should all hopefully be receiving emails
regarding the need for your assistance with facilitation in the near future.
SAFE
STAND
Following a successful spring session of SAFE this summer has meant implementing
suggestions from our table/lead coaches and youth into our program curriculum.
I hope these changes will continue to help with the success of our participants. I
once again would like to give a HUGE THANK YOU out to our guest speakers for
being so generous with their time to come and talk to the youth participants. You
make a huge positive difference in this program.
-Jenna McKinnon
LIFE CHOICES
The Fall Session is off to an excellent start. The youth are already bonding and showing remarkable
leadership skills within the group. Their ‘Teamwork Towers’ are some of the best I’ve seen!
We have made some changes with the speeches, and now have a “Topic Jar” that kids can pull
topics to speak about. This takes the pressure of preparing a speech off the youth that have difficulty
with writing skills. The youth seem to enjoy this process, as I look on the board as I write this,
there are NINE names of youth who VOLUNTEERED to present next week! This is just one of the examples
of how the process is SO much more important then the content!
As you may recall from the Spring Newsletter, one of the challenges that our new building had
was the ‘echo’ in the program rooms. Some of our young people with central auditory processing
difficulty or ADD/ADHD struggled to concentrate with the extra noise in the room. Fortunately, we
were able to get some funding from the Ministry to purchase sound panels making the noise problem
disappear!! Our resident handyman helped to get the panels installed and they work GREAT!!!
No more echo!
- Michelle Shelswell and Andraya Dunn
WOW!! It’s been busy this summer and fall! The word is getting out about one of Rebound’s
newest programs. I have had lots of calls from parents who are looking for
someone to help their children navigate the tricky pre-teen and teen years. I have
been able to work with some terrific kids aged 8-17.
Some of the issues that youth have been struggling with include; unhealthy self esteem,
addiction, grief and loss, breakdown of family, sexual orientation, bullying and
unhealthy relationships.
Many of these kids just want a safe place that they can come to talk and someone
that they trust who can listen.
I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to help these kids to see themselves for the
amazing young people that I know they are!
- Kelly Wilson
STAGEsenior
The STAGE program continues to change to meet the needs of the females participating in the program.
Popular topics of conversation include; relational aggression, body image, media influence, self-esteem and
safety issues. We have a small group this session, but that has allowed for some very rich conversations. I
am so proud of these strong, young women!
STAGEjunior
This session we are running a 10-session pilot group with eight wonderful young girls from 9-11 years of
age.
Due to the success of the last pilot session we are continuing with weekly role plays. The girls take the new
information they’ve learned and present a role-play to Staff at Rebound. This has been a challenge with a
larger group of girls, but they are really enjoying the process and learning while they work out a ‘production’.
Much of the learning comes from the “debrief” after each role play. We talk about how it felt to act a certain
way, what felt comfortable to them and if they think it would work in the ‘real world’. Research indicates that
young people are more apt to try out new skills in real-life situations if they’ve had the opportunity to ‘try
them on’ in a safe environment.
These girls are beginning to form a relationship of trust and they have done great work learning how to deal
with bullying, learning the difference between positive and negative friendships and are beginning to question
the negative media influences that surround today’s youth.
One of my favourite moments from this session was when one of our young ladies was having difficulty coming
up with three positive traits about herself. Another participant wasted no time jumping in to list almost a
dozen positive traits that she saw in her.
True story! This is the amazing stuff I get to witness all the time!!
-Michelle Shelswell
County Programs
What a busy time since September arrived ‘out here’ in the county!
After 18 months, we once again have a heartbeat in Forest. We are running a combined Safe/Life Choices Program
on Monday evenings at the North Lambton Community Health Centre. In Forest there are 8 clients and 2 volunteers.
Our Table coaches are Connie McGregor and Laura Veers. Laura has also helped out by taking on the Lead Coach
role occasionally – thanks, Laura! We have also been blessed with a number of guest speakers who were willing to
‘make the trip’ to Forest and share their experiences. It truly does take a community to raise a child!
The BIG NEWS about Petrolia ….we recently moved to a new facility at 411 Wingfield. If you’re in Petrolia on Tuesday
afternoons, drop in for a tour! The new place is a bit roomier than the previous space and the building itself is better
maintained. I feel safer there. Our move was made possible through the generosity of Dr.Frank Riedl and his wife,
Lynne. In Petrolia we are also running a combined SAFE/LIFE Choices Program on Tuesday evenings with 8 clients
and 3 volunteers. Our Table coaches are Jayne Logan and Joan Barney and Table Coach/Lead Coach is Beth Lucan.
Again, we have had a great response to requests for guest speakers at our Petrolia fall program.
And finally, I’d like to share my Christmas wish. All I want for Christmas is MORE VOLUNTEERS for the
county! Our current volunteers are great….we just need more of them!
Good Bye to a Dear Friend
It is with great sadness and remorse that the Rebound
Family announces the sudden passing of their friend
and colleague Joel Hookey on July 18, 2010. Joel was a
well-respected police officer with the Lambton O.P.P. He
enjoyed playing golf, hockey and spending time with his
family, friends and coworkers.
Joel was affectionately, known by many as “Hollywood”
Hookey.
Joel was very supportive of Rebound through his career
as a Youth Officer with the O.P.P. Joel was very active in
referring youth to attend the many programs Rebound offers.
Joel believed in the programs and the benefits to the
youth. His presence within the organization was always
positive and friendly. He was often found visiting youth
while in the programs, offering continued support, showing
care and concern.
Joel leaves behind his beautiful wife Marnie and children
Landen and Coehan.
Joel will be missed, yet fondly remembered by Rebound’s
staff, friends and community.
