COLLABORATIVE INVESTIGATION
Logic Puzzles Revisited
The logic puzzles in the Extension on pages 133–136
are fairly elementary, considering the complexity of
some of the other problems found in the three magazines
mentioned. The problem here requires more
time and reasoning skills than the ones appearing
in the Extension. It is taken from Dell Logic Puzzles,
October 1999.
The class may wish to divide up into groups and
see which group can solve this problem fastest.
DUNKING BOOTH by Margaret
Rounds
In order to help raise money for Dellville’s annual fall
festival, the coach of a local men’s baseball team volunteered
to sit in a dunking booth. Five of Coach
Clark’s players, each of whom plays a different position
on the team (including first base), stepped up to
the challenge of dunking him, and each player took a
different number of throws (two, four, five, six, or
nine) to complete his mission. From the clues below,
can you determine the order in which each player
(identified by full name—one surname is Winslow)
dunked the coach, the number of throws it took to do
so, and the position each plays
1. The right fielder took three more throws than
Josh (who wasn’t the last dunker).
2. The shortstop threw immediately before
Mr. Belford, who threw immediately before Geoffrey.
3. Mr. Cavallo dunked the coach with his sixth
pitch.
4. The players who took an even number of throws
are Scott, Mr. Hepler, and the fifth person to
dunk the coach, in some order.
5. The pitcher (who wasn’t the fourth dunker) took
more throws than Oliver, but fewer throws than
Mr. Janney.

Chapter 3 Test 149
6. The players who took an odd number of throws
are Edgar and the catcher, in some order.
