1970s – fast and inexpensive computers become readily available A.M. Cormack and G.N. Hounsfield – reconstruction of tomographic scan of the real object (Nobel prize in 1979). It is a painless computerized mathematical technique which permits the reconstruction of three dimensional (3D) images of x-<strong>rays</strong>. x CT scans can distinguish between the many structures that overlap p on a diagnostic x-<strong>rays</strong>, presenting instead a cross-sectional sectional view of body anatomy. Overlaps are eliminated so different organs can be clearly distinguished and their internal structure analyzed. CT provides excellent visualization of soft tissues that would be difficult or impossible to see via radiography. Contribution to better planning for surgery, to measuring the density of body tissues and to studying different diseases.
CT scanner resembles a huge doughnut, with a cylindrical hole (gantry) rougly 70 cm in diameter. The person to be scanned lies on a table that can be moved into this opening. Since only one region of the body is examined at a time, the scanner surrounds only that section rather than entire body, so the person is not uncomfortably confined. This geometry opens up the possibility of interventional medical procedures being performed simultaneously with scanning.
