Dear Colleagues + Guests,<br />

Please join us at the Annual Meeting of the <strong>Musculoskeletal</strong> <strong>Tumor</strong> <strong>Society</strong>, to be held<br />

October 3 – 5, 2013! This year’s conference marks the 37th MSTS gathering, and a<br />

return to San Francisco after nearly 30 years.<br />

We trust that you will agree that the Scientific <strong>Program</strong> is composed of presentations of the<br />

highest academic caliber. Bay Area basic science breakthroughs in stem cell research and<br />

other areas will be highlighted. In addition to discussing limb salvage advances, the care<br />

of the amputee patient will be a focus, including osseointegrated transdermal prosthetic<br />

devices and other strides in rehabilitation practice. With attendees from several continents<br />

and many countries, international humanitarian and collaborative efforts for improving the<br />

care of orthopaedic oncology patients will be featured.<br />

We will host a concurrent Allied Health <strong>Program</strong> for Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners,<br />

Physicians’ Assistants, and staff. Our very own James O. Johnston, MD will do his best<br />

to Stump the Professors where attendees will be vying for the latest in iPad technology. On<br />

Friday, you will have the opportunity to step out on the town in one of the world’s most<br />

beautiful cities, in a season that typically offers the best climate.<br />

Educational Goals<br />

& Objectives<br />

At the conclusion of this CME activity, the attendee<br />

should be able to:<br />

1. Describe the progress in basic science research in<br />

musculoskeletal and connective tissue oncology;<br />

2. Identify new and emerging molecular targets to exploit<br />

in therapeutic strategies;<br />

3. Cite the success rates of existing treatments for bone<br />

and soft tissue sarcomas;<br />

4. Be familiar with the new and emerging technologies<br />

in the treatment of musculoskeletal tumors;<br />

5. Describe advances in imaging and surgical<br />

management of connective tissue tumors;<br />

6. Discuss the benefits of multidisciplinary input when<br />

formulating treatment plans; and<br />

7. Formulate a differential diagnosis for bone and soft<br />

tissue masses.<br />

This Annual Meeting of the <strong>Musculoskeletal</strong> <strong>Tumor</strong> <strong>Society</strong> has<br />

been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential<br />

Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing<br />

Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship<br />

of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the<br />

<strong>Musculoskeletal</strong> <strong>Tumor</strong> <strong>Society</strong>.<br />

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons is<br />

accredited by the ACCME to sponsor continuing medical<br />

education for physicians. This continuing medical education<br />

activity has been submitted for review by the American<br />

Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. AMA PRA Category<br />

I Credits will be available for this activity. Physicians<br />

should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their<br />

participation in the activity.<br />

MISSION<br />

The mission of the <strong>Musculoskeletal</strong> <strong>Tumor</strong> <strong>Society</strong> is to advance<br />

the science of orthopaedic oncology and to promote high<br />

standards of patient care. It does this through excellence in<br />

education and research and through advocacy on behalf of<br />

patients and orthopaedic oncologists.<br />

VISION<br />

The <strong>Musculoskeletal</strong> <strong>Tumor</strong> <strong>Society</strong> is the recognized authority on<br />

all aspects of orthopaedic oncology, is an influential participant<br />

in policy-making for oncology services, and is responsive<br />

to the needs of orthopaedic oncologists and their patients.<br />

GOALS<br />

• MSTS will be the preeminent source of high quality<br />

education on orthopaedic oncology.<br />

• MSTS will foster and facilitate research in orthopaedic<br />

oncology to improve clinical outcomes<br />

for patients.<br />

• MSTS will play a leadership role in policy-making and<br />

advocacy on behalf of orthopaedic oncologists and<br />
