A Vessel Traffic service (VTS) for the control of<br />
shipping is in operation in Mumbai and JNPT port.<br />
Participation is mandatory for all vessels navigating in or<br />
intending or entering Mumbai and JNPT port. For further<br />
details see Indian list of Radio Signals Volume 6.<br />

AREAS OF CONGESTION.<br />

Due to convergence of traffic areas of congestion are as<br />
follows:<br />
(i) Entrance of Mumbai Port Channel at the outer Reef<br />
Buoy<br />
(ii) At Pilot Station<br />
(iii) Off Sunk Rock<br />
(iv) In the Channel off Middle Ground *<br />
(v) Off JD Tanker Terminal No. 4<br />
* Precautionary areas marked on charts<br />
All Vessels whilst approaching these congestion<br />
points/areas are to exercise extreme caution which<br />
necessitates reduction of speed and are to follow safe speed<br />
as per COLREGS.<br />

Two lighterage areas are available in the Mumbai Port<br />
Trust:<br />
(a) Port Lighterage Anchorage area encompassed by<br />
the following co-ordinates:<br />
18º 57'.0 N, 72º 41'.0 E<br />
18º 55'.0 N, 72º 41'.0 E<br />
18º 55'.0 N, 72º 43'.5 E<br />
18º 57'.0 N, 72º 43'.5 E<br />
(b) STS lighterage operations area is centred on 18º<br />
56'N, 72º 24'E with a radius of 02 nm and operated<br />
between the month of Oct- May.
