For whales, the ocean off Andenes, at the
northern tip of the Norwegian island of
Andoya, is a very special place. Here, the
edge of the continental shelf is closer to land
than anywhere else along the coast of Norway
and a special deep sea area called Bleik
Canyon was formed thousands of years ago.
This extraordinary spot provides a stable
stock of sperm whales with food such as
deep-sea squid and fish.
As a result, Andenes is the most
convenient whale watching location in
Northern Norway - it takes only an hour
by boat to reach these magnificent whale
watching grounds.

Whale Safari have recorded a 95 to 98
per cent level of sightings on their summer
whale safaris. As well as sperm whales,
minke whales and orca whales, dolphins,
pilot whales, and harbour porpoises can
also be seen.
Since 1988, Whale Safari has carried out
thousands of whale watching trips on wellequipped
boats with highly-skilled crews and
hydrophones for listening in to underwater
activity. By taking a bearing on these ‘clicks’,
the captain manages to place the boat very
close to the whales when they next surface.
