REALM OF THE POLAR BEAR
Take a memorable voyage into the realm
of the polar bear, on a Hurtigruten voyage
that circumnavigates Spitsbergen, the largest
island in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago.
Remote, mysterious, extreme and
located at the southern fringe of the frozen
Arctic Ocean, Spitzbergen is a land forged
by ice, wind and sea. Your expedition-style
landings will take you close to the wildlife,
the ghost towns of early whaling stations,
remote mining towns and spectacular fjords
and icebergs.
The nine-day voyage’s goal is to go above
the 80th Parallel, showing you Spitsbergen’s
great eastern nature reserves and some
of the most spectacular highlights of the
Arctic. As well as an untouched wilderness,
Spitsbergen is the epitome of biodiversity,
where the tundra and towering glaciers
herald a staggeringly rich array of natural and
cultural treasures.
This voyage is one of a kind. Arriving
at North-West Spitsbergen National Park,
your ship MS Fram is small enough and
uses ‘clean’ petrol, allowing you to visit a

You will also spend some days exploring
the Eastern Svalbard Nature Reserves and
South Spitzbergen National Park. Places
visited include Sorgfjord, Alkefjell, Kapp
Lee and Storfjord. These two large nature
reserves in East Svalbard were established to
protect some of the most pristine High Arctic
environment on Earth. In Eastern Svalbard,
the density of polar bears is higher than
other areas of Svalbard – now it is up to you
to spot one!
